Tipperary Senior Hurlers

Well done to the Senior Hurlers who commenced their League campaign in wet conditions at FBD Semple Stadium last Saturday evening with a 1-21 to 1-16 victory over Galway.

The sides were level at 0-9 apiece at the interval with two late Darragh McCarthy frees drawing Tipperary level. A well finished Rory Burke goal gave the Tribesmen a 1-10 to 0-12 lead in the 40th minute. The teams traded scores thereafter until a well worked Darragh Stakelum goal on the 63rd minute put Tipperary three points clear and they held out from there. Captain Jake Morris was named Man of the Match after contributing five points from play.

Galway remain Tipperary’s most frequent League opponents with Saturday night’s game their 77th meeting. Tipperary have now won 50 of those encounters with Galway recording 21 victories and the remaining six ending in draws.

Many thanks to Galway for the guard of honour before the game, a wonderful acknowledgment of Tipperary’s All Ireland success in 2025 as the teams took to the field at FBD Semple Stadium.

The Hurlers’ attention now turns to Offaly who they will face this coming Sunday 1st February in the second round of the Allianz League. Throw in is at 2.00 pm in Glenisk O’Connor Park, Tullamore.

Tipperary have met Offaly in the League on 42 previous occasions, with Tipp victorious on 34, Offaly winning 6 and 2 games ending in a draw. Tipperary’s most recent league meeting with Offaly came in the 2017 Quarter Final, with the Premier County emerging victorious on a 4-28 to 3-13 scoreline. Séamus Callanan produced a star performance, finishing with 2-11, while the remaining Tipperary goals came from Paul Flynn and Steven O’Brien. For Offaly, Shane Dooley scored 2-8 for the Faithful County, with Oisín Kelly adding their third goal.

Tipperary Senior Footballers

Cian Smith’s last minute two pointer earned Tipperary a 0-21 to 0-21 draw against London at McGovern Park Ruislip last Sunday in the first round of the league. London set the pace in the first half with Joe McGill and Daniel Clarke key in building a 0-11 to 0-7 halftime lead.
Paudie Feehan and Sean O’Connor kept Tipp within reach.
In the second half Daithi Hogan and O’Connor narrowed the gap while London briefly pulled five clear. Michael Freaney’s injury time two-pointer kept Tipperary in the hunt.
Smith sealed a thrilling finale with the final score securing a share of the points for Tipp.

Focus now switches to Antrim who they face this Sunday 1st February, in round two of the Allianz League. The game throws in at 2.00 pm in FBD Semple Stadium.

The last five league meetings between Tipperary and Antrim have been closely contested, with Tipperary holding a slight edge, recording three wins to Antrim’s two. The most recent clash came in Division 3 in 2023, when Antrim emerged as comfortable winners on a 1-19 to 0-14 scoreline. The sides also met in Division 3 in 2017, with Tipperary coming out on top by 2-12 to 0-13. A high-scoring Division 4 encounter in 2014 saw Tipperary edge Antrim by 3-20 to 2-17.Antrim claimed victory in their 2012 Division 3 meeting, winning 1-13 to 0-13, while Tipperary were victorious in Division 4 in 2008, recording a 0-10 to 0-7 win.

Best of luck to the Nenagh CBS hurlers as they take on St. Flannan’s this coming Saturday 31st January at 1.00pm in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chíosóg Ennis in the Final of the TUS Dr. Harty Cup Munster Under 19 ‘A’ Hurling Championship.

Nenagh CBS will be aiming to claim their second title, having secured their maiden success in 2024. They were also finalists in 1990, 1996, 1997 and 2012. Notably, Nenagh were defeated by St. Flannan’s in the 1990 final on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-3. Clare great Jamsie O’Connor captained the Ennis side to victory on that occasion, while Eddie Tucker captained the Nenagh team.There are strong family connections to that 1990 final, with Eddie Tucker’s nephew Eanna lining out for the current Nenagh side. John Doughan played at wing forward for Nenagh in 1990 while his son Eoghan is now the team’s free-taker and leading scorer.

Best of luck to St. Joseph’s Borrisoleigh as they take on Dungarvan CBS in the TUS Corn Risteard Uí Mhathúna Munster Under 19 ‘C’ Hurling Final. The game is scheduled for Friday 30th January at 1.00 pm and will take place in Fethard Town Park. Borrisoleigh have claimed the ‘C’ Hurling title on two previous occasions – 1993 and 1995.

Last week was a fantastic one for the Tipperary schools football scene with notable victories for CBS High School Clonmel and The Abbey Tipperary.

High School progressed to the Final of the Corn Uí Mhuirí Munster Senior ‘A’ Football Championship after defeating Presentation SS Milltown last Saturday in Kilmallock. They were behind 0-5 to 1-8 at half time but produced an excellent second half performance, holding their opponents scoreless. They made the perfect start to the half with a well finished goal from Mikey McGuire, followed by a Aaron McAndrew point and a two pointer from Luke Foley to level the sides. High School remained on top for the remainder of the game, with points from McAndrew and Conor Freaney securing the victory. They will face Tralee CBS in the final on Saturday 7th February.

The Abbey Tipperary recorded an impressive 1-16 to 1-9 victory over Mitchelstown CBS last Friday in the Semi Final of the TUS Corn Dhonncha Uí Nuanáin Under 19 ‘B’ Football Championship. The Abbey were commanding throughout, leading 0-9 to 0-4 at half time, with a Sean Cleary goal from wing back giving them extra breathing room. They will face Mount Saint Michael Rosscarbery in the Munster Final on Saturday 7th February.

Tipperary Coaching & Games Development

Tipperary Coaching & Games Development will host a Gaelic Football Coaches Workshop on Saturday, 31st January, at 10.00am in Cashel Community School. Munster Junior ‘B’ Championship

Best of luck to Golden Kilfeacle who take part in the Munster Junior ‘B’ Football Championship when they take on Clooney Quin (Clare) in the Quarter Final this coming Sunday 1st February at 2.00 pm in Knockaderry, Limerick.

Silvermines will compete in the Munster Junior ‘B’ Hurling Final on Saturday 7th February against Ballybrown of Limerick.

Tipperary Supporters Club Night at the Dogs

The Tipperary Supporters Club will host a Night at the Dogs on Saturday, February 21st at Thurles Greyhound Stadium, with the first of 10 races off at 7.30pm. Tickets are €20 for adults, with children free, and include a race card, free raffle and autograph signing by 2025 All-Ireland winning players. The night will feature a free raffle with prizes including a hotel break, cash and signed jerseys, along with sponsorship opportunities. 2026 Tipperary Club Season Pass

All Ireland Scór Na nÓg Final

Killarney was the destination for five Tipperary acts last weekend, in search of a coveted All Ireland Scór medal. Kids from Moyne Templetuohy, Newcastle, JK Brackens and Templederry Kenyon’s took centre stage in the INEC on the biggest day in the Scór Na nÓg calendar. A bumper crowd was treated to a day of Irish Culture and we are ever so proud of our five Tipperary acts.

Congratulations to our amazing Newcastle dancers who have competed a historic 5 in a row in Rince Foirne Titles at this grade! We are beyond proud of the girls and their coach Kathy!

We done to all our other acts on the day Lucy Daly (JK Brackens), Templederry’s Novelty and Music and Moyne Templetuohy’s quiz team, while success eluded them we are so so proud of all they achieved on what was undoubtedly one of the best standard of Scór’s in recent years!

Thanks to all the clubs for their commitment to Scór again this year and our attention will turn to Senior Scór soon with the County Final scheduled for Friday February 20th in Templederry.

Sympathy

Tipperary GAA wish to express sympathy to the family and friends of Tommy O’Dwyer (Borris-Ileigh) who passed away recently.

Tommy hurled at Minor and Under 21 level for Tipperary before stepping up to the Senior Hurling panel in 1972. He scored a point in Tipperary’s drawn Munster Quarter Final against Clare in 1977. He gave many years of service to Borris-Ileigh, winning three Senior Hurling titles and five North Senior Hurling titles. He was also a selector and substitute on the victorious All Ireland Club campaign in 1987.

May he rest in peace.
