Tipperary GAA Scene 14th January 2026

Pride of place goes to Upperchurch Drombane who captured the AIB All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling title last Saturday in Croke Park following a thrilling extra-time victory over a gallant Tooreen side, finishing 4-20 to 2-24. It was a superb contest and a fitting occasion for both teams.

Commiserations to Tooreen on a fine performance and congratulations to Upperchurch Drombane who now join Kiladangan, winners of the inaugural Intermediate title in 2005, alongside Senior All-Ireland club champions Roscrea (1971), Kilruane MacDonaghs (1986) and Borris-Ileigh (1987).

The Tipperary senior hurlers travelled to Tralee last Sunday to face Kerry in the Co-Op Superstores Munster Senior Hurling League and came away with a hard-earned 1-16 to 1-7 win in wet and windy conditions. Tipperary made a strong start, leading 0-5 to 0-1 after six minutes before Kerry responded with three unanswered points. A well-taken goal by Michael Slattery in the 23rd minute gave the home side the advantage and Kerry led 1-4 to 0-6 at half-time.

Tipperary regained control early in the second half, with Oisín O’Donoghue finishing to the net after excellent build-up play from Conor Stakelum to open a four-point lead. The visitors pushed on from there to secure the victory. However, the result was not enough to book a place in the Munster Senior Hurling League Final and attention now turns to the Allianz National Hurling League, with Tipperary set to face Galway on Saturday 24 January at 7.00pm in FBD Semple Stadium.

After an impressive victory over Limerick on Friday 2 January in Round 1 of the McGrath Cup, the Senior Footballers hosted a strong Cork side last Tuesday 6 January in Cappawhite. The Tipperary management continued their experimental approach in the competition, making nine changes to the team that defeated Limerick. Cork were in control throughout, leading 1-11 to 0-3 at half-time with Ruairí Deane scoring the visitors’ goal in the third minute. The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Rebels running out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 1-26 to 0-10. An excellent Mark Russell two-pointer was the highlight of Tipperary’s second-half scoring.

With the McGrath Cup Final now out of reach, focus shifts to the Allianz National Football League as Tipperary travel to the UK to face London on Sunday 25 January. The game will take place at McGovern Park, Ruislip with a 1.00pm throw-in (note earlier throw in time).

It was a busy week on the post-primary schools hurling front with eight Tipperary schools in Quarter Final action last week.

In the Dr Harty Cup Munster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Hurling Championship, Nenagh CBS, Thurles CBS and Our Lady’s Templemore competed in the Quarter Finals. Nenagh CBS recorded an impressive 3-17 to 2-14 victory over Midleton CBS in Bansha while Thurles CBS earned a hard-fought 2-13 to 0-16 win over De La Salle College Waterford in Castlelyons. Both games took place last Wednesday 7 January. Nenagh CBS and Thurles CBS will now face each other in the Semi Final this coming Saturday at 12.30 pm in Templederry.

Our Lady’s Templemore played their Quarter Final last Friday and lost out to a strong St Flannan’s side on a scoreline of 2-20 to 1-19.

Coláiste Dún Iascaigh (Cahir) were defeated by Tralee CBS in the Quarter Final of the ‘B’ (Corn Thomáis Mhic Choilm) competition on a scoreline of 0-17 to 0-16.

Also last Wednesday in the ‘C’ competition, Corn Risteard Uí Mhathúna, Presentation Ballingarry lost out to Pobail Scoil na Tríonóide Youghal on a 2-18 to 0-18 scoreline. St Mary’s Newport were defeated 3-21 to 2-17 by Coláiste an Phiarsaigh Glanmire.

There was an all-Tipperary clash the previous day with St Joseph’s Borrisoleigh victorious over Borrisokane Community College by 1-17 to 1-10. St Joseph’s will face Coláiste an Phiarsaigh Glanmire in the Semi Final this coming Friday at 12 noon in Kilmallock.

The Tipperary Association Dublin will host its Annual Awards Function on Saturday 17 January at the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Newlands Cross, Dublin. Liam Cahill, Tipperary Senior Hurling Manager, will receive the Person of the Year award while Alice Leahy will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Club Summit brings together Gaelic Games volunteers from across Ireland and beyond for a day of expert-led seminars, interactive exhibitions and inspiring forums. It takes place in Croke Park on Saturday 7 February. Tickets and further information are available at gaa.ie/clubsummit.
