FBD Insurance County Championships
Hurling was the main area of attention across the county last weekend with games taking place in a number of grades.
In the senior hurling championship semi-finals, the action got underway on Saturday evening when Moycarkey Borris and Toomevara met in FBD Semple Stadium. With both sides hoping to make a return to the senior hurling final after long absences, a very competitive game was expected and indeed that was what we got, however as the old saying goes ‘goals win games’ and on this occasion it was Toomevara who capitalised on their goal chances through Darragh McCarthy, as they claimed victory and a place in the final on a full time score of 2-19 to 0-20.
The second semi final took place on Sunday afternoon, and it was hard to believe the change in weather conditions as both sides had to battle against very strong wind and rain. Games between Loughmore Castleiney and Thurles Sarsfields have always been close, hard fought encounters and that was no different last weekend as players from both sides gave it their all in an effort to reach the final. Having started the better, Loughmore Castleiney found themselves behing mid way through the first half as a result of a brace of goals from the stick of Paddy Creedon and it looked as if the Thurles men were going to push on. However, Loughmore Castleined regrouped and put in a very good second half display that saw them progress to the final on a 0-17 to 2-09 scoreline.
In the Premier Intermediate semi-finals, first into cation on Saturday were the players of Cashel King Cormacs and Upperchurch Drombane who served up a thrilling game that went all the way to extra time before a winner was decided. This game had everything, fabulous scores, near misses, outstanding skill and a total of 8 goals and 49 points. In the end it was Cashel King Cormacs who earned the right to play in this year’s final on a full time score of 6-21 to 2-28. The second semi-final took place on Sunday and was between Carrick Swan and Gortnahoe Glengoole. Coming into the game the title of favourites was firmly with the Mid Tipperary side, but from the off it was very clear that ‘the swan’ did not come to FBD Semple Stadium just for a day out. Given the weather conditions, this was a very good game of hurling that was very evenly balanced as it entered the final quarter that saw Carrick Swan push on and win by 0-18 to 0-14.
In the Intermediate semi-finals there were wins for Ballingarry over Golden Kilfeacle 1-13 to 2-09 and Moneygall defeated Cappawhite by 1-17 to 1-15. The Quarter Finals of the Junior B hurling championship resulted in wins for Newport over Thurles Gaels, Cappawhite overcame St Patricks, Cahir had 2 points to spare over Eire Óg Annacarty, while in Templemore, Silvermines overcame Holycross Ballycahill.
A number of very important games took place in the relegation competitions last weekend and as a result of these games, Lorrha Dorrha retained their senior status by virtue of a 1-18 to 1-15 win over Templederry Kenyons. In the Premier Intermediate grade, both Newport and Sean Treacys will have to do it all again as a result of their 1-18 to 2-15 draw in Nenagh. In the Intermediate relegation final, Ballybacon Grange proved to be too strong for Upperchurch Drombane when they met in Bansha.
There was also one game played in the Junior A football championship last weekend that saw Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams earn a spot in this year’s semi-finals thanks to a good 3-04 to 0-09 win over Ballylooby Castlegrace.

The action this coming weekend will focus on the football championships with games taking place in Senior, Intermediate, Premier Junior Junior A, Junior B and under 19.
Tickets for all the games can be purchased on the ticket section of the Tipperary GAA website, while Tap & Go will also be in operation at each venue. Weekend passes will also be available for supporters who may wish to a number of games.

Win a House in Tipperary Fundraiser
Last Saturday evening, at the Brú Ború Theatre in Cashel, Tipperary GAA launched its most ambitious fundraising initiative to date: the ‘Win a House’ draw.
The grand prize is a fully furnished home in Bregawn, Cashel, valued at €350,000. Alternatively, the winner can choose a cash prize of €300,000.
Tickets are priced at €100 and will be available for purchase through the official ‘Win a House’ website www.winahouse.ie and participating Tipperary GAA clubs. To encourage local engagement, €30 from each physical ticket sold by a club will remain with that club.
A target has been set to sell 20,000 tickets over the next six months, with the final draw taking place on St. Patrick’s Weekend 2025.
Civic Reception for Tipperary Minor Hurlers
Last Saturday morning at the Brú Ború Theatre in Cashel, The Tipperary Minor Hurlers who won Munster and All-Ireland titles in 2024 were honoured with a civic reception by Tipperary County Council. We wish to express our gratitude to Tipperary County Council and in particular CEO, Sinead Carr and Chairperson Declan Burgess for bestowing this great honour on our wonderful young hurlers.
Health and Wellbeing
Minister Mary Butler officially launched the Tipperary County Council sponsored 5 Ways to Wellbeing boards on September 23rd in TUS Campus Thurles. Clubs who have received boards are asked to ensure they are displayed in a suitable spot for all to see in their grounds. Any club who has not yet received one please contact Cora or Seamus at chair.hwc.tipperary@gaa.ie We would like to thank Áine Roche Tipperary County Council Wellbeing Officer for the time and effort she has put into organizing and delivering the boards which contain valuable information on how access services to help us all with our mental wellbeing.
On Wednesday 25th September the North Board hosted a Gambling Awareness Talk in Nenagh which was open to all members of the community . Guest speaker Tony O’Reilly gave a fascinating and detailed insight into his own gambling addiction and how being caught and imprisoned helped him turn his life around and is now working in the counselling field. The meeting was also addressed by Dylan Johnston Addiction Counsellor with Silver Arch Family Resource Centre who gave information on the supports available through the center. Well done to Brendan Shanahan and his fellow North Board Officers on acknowledging the need for such a talk and asking clubs to prominently display through their social media the resources available to anyone in difficulty.
As Autumn works its magic Siul Eile has organized an eight week free walking program taking in a variety of woodland walking loops in South Tipperary. Siul Eile’s aim is to create and promote social interactions, improve physical health and connect people with their local environment. Tipperary Association Dublin Annual Awards 2024
The Tipperary Association Dublin is inviting nominations for its annual awards which acknowledge the special contribution and achievements of Tipperary people in 2024.
Nominations are invited in two categories:
Tipperary Person of the Year and Hall of Fame.
The awards will be presented at a special function in November 2024 to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Association.
The Tipperary Person of the Year Award acknowledges the special contribution and achievements of a Tipperary person at local, county and national level from the fields of sport, academics, community and business. The Award will be presented to an individual who made a special contribution to Tipperary in the past year and who achieved success in the person’s chosen field of endeavour.
Recent winners of the Award include successful hurling manager Michael Ryan (2016), Tipperary senior hurlers Brendan Maher and Seamus Callanan joint winners in 2019 and the “Quenn of the Turf” Rachael Blackmore (2021). The entertainment duo The Two Johnnies were the 2023 joint winners of the Tipperary Person of the Year Award.
The Hall of Fame Award honours and acknowledges the achievements and contributions made in the past by individuals in the areas of culture, sport, community activity/development or business. This award will acknowledge one of the Tipperary “stand out” individuals of the past. Many of Tipperary Greats have been inducted into the Hall of Fame from the inaugural winner in 1999 legendary Tipperary hurler, John Doyle, to more recent inductees as author/historian Eddie Dalton (2016), founder and manager of Aiseiri addiction services Sr. Eileen Fahy (2018) and former GAA Board Secretary Tim Floyd in 2022. Last year’s winner was song writer and composer Brendan Graham.

Fundraiser in Memory of Late Liam Kearns
Liam Kearns was a dedicated member of the GAA throughout his life, with many years spent on the Tipperary GAA scene. He led the Aherlow club team to the 2010 Senior Football Club Championship title. He later took the role of Manager for the Tipperary Senior Football team from 2015 to 2019. During his tenure he led the team to reach their first All-Ireland Senior Football Semi Final since 1935.
Liam passed away suddenly at the age of 61 from a heart attack in March 2023, leaving behind a huge void in his family. He was active, healthy, and lived life to the full every day. Above all else he was a dedicated family man who is dearly missed and remembered. Liam had no symptoms of heart disease prior to his untimely death, which highlights a need for further heart screening and awareness campaigns in Ireland. This work of the Irish Heart Foundation is crucial and the funds raised will enable them to continue their great work in empowering Irish people to live longer, healthier lives. Every day hundreds of people in Ireland are diagnosed with heart disease and 9000 people die each year of stroke and heart disease, making these treatable illnesses one of the biggest killers in Ireland. The Irish Heart Foundation work tirelessly to eliminate preventable death as a result of heart disease and stroke through advocacy, patient supports, awareness campaigns, and much more. One hundred percent of money raised will go directly to the Irish Heart Foundation and all support is
