McGrath Cup Senior Football League
Tipperary senior footballers opened their competitive action for 2024 with a trip to Tralee to play Kerry in the opening round of the McGrath Cup, last Wednesday evening. In Paul Kelly’s first game in charge the team showed some good signs of improvement and although victory was not achieved I am sure that both the players and management will have learned a lot from the game and will have worked on some of the areas that they will have deemed necessary to improve on ahead of their next game in the competition which takes place in Templetuohy this coming Sunday at 2pm when they will play Limerick. I would encourage as many Tipperary supporters as possible to go along to Templetuohy and show your support for our senior footballers.
Coop Superstores Munster Hurling League
Liam Cahill’s senior hurlers travelled to Dungarvan last Sunday afternoon where they played Waterford in their opening game of the Coop Superstores Munster Senior Hurling League. Having taken a little time to get going and having suffered the loss of a player to a red card after 20 minutes, Tipperary played very well in the second half of this game and indeed could well have won. However Waterford scored 3 points in the final moments of the game to come away with their second win of the competition which has guaranteed them their place in this years final. Tipperary now play Kerry this Sunday afternoon in Nenagh in a game that will give the teammanagement an opportunity to try out players who may not have featured in lats weekends game. Throw in at MacDonagh Park will be at 2pm.
Ireland Lights Up 2024
The ever popular ‘Ireland Lights Up’ returns to GAA clubs in January 2024 in partnership with RTE’s Operation Transformation and Get Ireland Walking.
Ireland Lights Up encourages GAA clubs across the 32 counties to light up and bring communities together to walk and talk in a safe environment during the dark winter evenings. As ever, a club participating in Ireland Lights Up will be showcased each week on RTE’s Operation Transformation.
In 2023, over 1000 GAA clubs signed up for Ireland Lights Up helping tens of thousands of participants improve their physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Clubs also recruited over 29,600 walkers to participate in the ‘Every Steps Counts Challenge’ delivered through the ‘MyLife’ app, in partnership with the Irish Life GAA Healthy Clubs programme. Participants walked over 5,500,000 kms during the five-week challenge.
Registrations for the 2024 ‘Ireland Lights Up’ and ‘Every Step Counts’ MyLife Challenge is now open. Ireland Lights Up commences on Wednesday, January 10th, to coincide with the broadcast of the second episode of Operation Transformation on RTE.
The challenge will commence on the MyLife App on January 8th and run for five weeks until midnight on the 12th of February. Participating clubs will be encouraged to register as many interested club and community members on the App in advance of this. (Any club that registered in 2023 will be auto-enrolled again this year. If already on the MyLife App from previous Steps Challenges, individuals will have to register for the new 2024 challenge on the App.) MyLife allows participants and clubs to track their participation in the challenge through regional and national league tables while also measuring the positive impact on their health and wellbeing.
Club Officer Training 2024
The GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association are pleased to confirm the next phase of Club Officer training scheduled for the first few months of 2024.
The Association’s Officer Development Committee has worked closely with the Provincial Councils, LGFA and Camogie Association to make a range of modules from the Club Leadership Development.
Programme (CLDP) available to both new and existing Club Officers.
A new format for 2024 has been developed and a breakdown of what is available is as follows:
- Revised Club Officer Foundations eLearning Module
The Club Officer Foundations eLearning Module has been updated and is now ready for Club Officers to complete. It will go live from the 1st January 2024 and it will be made accessible here –

- New Officer Induction Modules
Each Provincial Council will lead the delivery of online role-induction training for Chairpersons, Secretaries, Treasurers, PROs and Coaching Officers on the following dates:
- 11 January – Ulster
- 16 January – Connacht
- 18 January – Leinster
- 25 January – Munster
Specifically, a suite of 90-minute webinars will be delivered – by a team of voluntary Associates – for the following roles: Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, PRO and Coaching Officer.

- In-Person Events
Regional workshops on how to make your Club Executive more effective will be held in Q1 of 2024.
Dates, times and the format are being refined at the minute, so more information will be communicated to Clubs in due course.
- Optional Modules
Club Officers can choose to complete one module from ten options available. These modules will be a hybrid of pre-recorded webinars or live upcoming events.
- Reflection Submission
Club Officers will be asked to submit a 300 word reflection on their pathway through the CLDP this year OR Club Officers will be asked to submit a 300 word reflection on their Club’s report from the Club Compás Programme.
- Certification
Completion of mandatory elements in January – April 2024 earns a Certificate in Club Leadership (Gaelic Games).

The Officer Development Committee will also facilitate the organisation of additional training upon request from County Planning and Training Officers. In addition, further modules being organised by central departments will be added to the schedule in the coming weeks, e.g., Foireann.

Tipperary Referee appointed to take charge od All Ireland IHC Final
Congratulations to Michael Kennedy of Newcastle, who has been appointed to referee next weekends All Ireland Intermediate Hurling Final between Corks Castlelyons and Thomastown which takes place in Croke Park on Saturday evening at 7pm. The game will be broadcast live on TG4. We wish Michael and his team of officials the very best of good luck.
Handball News
The County Handball Cumann na mBunscoil Finals were hosted by Youghalarra & Nenagh Clubs. There was a great turnout for the games with 14 schools entered resulting in 57 players taking part and 33 games played. The Schools taking part were Carrig, Boher, Newport, Ballina, CBS Nenagh, Gaelscoil Nenagh, BNS Cashel, Burgess, Lissenhall, Ardcroney, Kilruane, Silvermines, St Marys Carrick on Suir & Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir. After some exciting games of handball in both venues with some games going to tie breaks we finally got down to finals which were held in Nenagh. The large crowd of Parents, Coaches Teachers and Granny,s & Grandads enjoyed some great games in the finals with a great spread of winners who go forward to represent Tipperary Schools in the Munster Finals. The full results of all games were sent out to schools & Clubs. Finals:
