TIPPERARY INTERMEDIATE TEAM
Tipperary Ladies Football hosted the Round 2 Qualifier for the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Championship in Sean Treacy Park, Tipperary Town with Limerick as their opponents. These two teams are no strangers to each other as they regularly meet in the Munster Championship and on the last occasion Limerick were victorious. The Tipperary Ladies team suffered an upset during the week when Niamh Lonergan (Moyle Rovers), one of their most hard-working players was diagnosed with a cruciate injury.

However, Tipperary commenced the game with determination as in the first minute Laura Dillon lobbed the ball in the top left corner of the net. In the fourth and fifth minute Limerick’s Dymphna O’Brien and Marie Curtin recorded a point each. Tipperary and Limerick traded wides before Gillian O’Brien pointed for Tipperary. In the twelfth minute Limerick got a penalty resulting from a high tackle and Marie Curtin netted the ball giving them the lead for a minute. Tipperary’s Aimee Pollard equalised with a point and Aisling McCarthy added another point. Tipperary’s lead was short lived as Stephanie Carroll and Marie Curtin added points to Limerick’s score line before Dymphna O’Brien raised the green flag as the second quarter commenced. Aisling McCarthy replied with a quick point before Limerick scored an unanswered goal and three points in the next ten minutes. In the final five minutes of the first half Tipperary’s Gillian O’Brien (2) and Lorraine O’Shea (1) recorded three points to reduce the half time deficit to Limerick 3-7 Tipperary 1-7

During the break the supporters sampled the Irish weather with belts of thunder and heavy rain showers which continued into the first few minutes of the second half. The conditions of playing surface had now become slippery and difficult.

Aisling McCarthy, Tipperary started the scoring in the thirty third minute with a point to be quickly returned by Marie Curtin, Limerick. Megan O’Mara, Stephanie Carroll and Dymphna O’Brien, Limerick got the next three points before Tipperary reapplied the pressure with a hat trick of points from Gillian O’Brien. Limerick’s Stephanie Carroll and Tipperary’s Sarah Everard traded points as the game entered the final quarter. Tipperary accelerated the pressure and this paid off in the fiftieth minute when Aisling McCarthy scored a goal to reduce the margin to three points. The final ten minutes of the game was in doubt the most captivating as Tipperary were denied two goal chances by the Limerick goalie, Kristina Hennessy. At the other end Lauren Fitzpatrick, Tipperary guarded her net well by a dramatic save after a Limerick ball hit the cross bar and rebounded from a kick to the safety of her hands. Tipperary outscored Limerick by two points to one in these final minutes. Limerick 3-13 Tipperary 2-14

Tipperary Chairman, Tommie Campbell acknowledged all the hard work and commitment by the Manager, John Leahy and his management team Martin Halpin, Janet Gleeson, Kaffee O’Connell and Pat Morrissey.
