TIPPERARY U14 TEAM

In 2013 Tipperary’s U14 team travelled to Kildysart, Co. Clare to defeat Clare in a thrilling game of football by a single point and this year it was Clare’s turn to make the journey to Tipperary and do the same. The venue was Leahy Park, at the foot of the Rock of Cashel under glorious spring sunshine but with a strong breeze blowing the length of the field.

Clare aided by the breeze in the first half started the scoring in the second minute with a Megan Downes point. Niamh Keane, Tipperary responded with a point of her own. Both teams recorded another point each before Fidelma Marrinan, Clare netted the ball in the tenth minute. Emma McMahon strengthened Clare’s lead further with another point in the thirteenth minute. However, Niamh Keane, Tipperary reduced the deficit to a point when she scored a goal in the sixteenth minute. For the next ten minutes there was very little between the sides with neither side managing to score. In the twenty fourth minute Clare opened the scoring again with a point from Caitriona Callinan to be following by a Megan Downes point in the twenty ninth minute. In injury time of the first half Niamh Keane and Roisin Daly raised the green flag for Tipperary while Clare’s Sarah McGann scored a point for her team to leave the half-time score – Tipperary 3-2 Clare 1-6

The second half was a different affair with both sides having periods of domination. With wind assistance, Tipperary camped out in the Clare half for the first 15 minutes but struggled to find their shooting boots, kicking a number of wides. It was the thirty ninth minute before Tipperary opened their second half account with a point from Niamh Keane to be followed by another point from Caoimhe Ryan two minutes later. In the forty sixth minute Caoimhe Ryan netted the ball to give Tipperary a seven point lead. However, Tipperary’s purple patch was over and they never scored again in the game. Clare on the other hand scored a point in the 51st minute against the run of play, their first score of the second half. This score seemed to give Clare hope that they were still in this game and with the Banner defence now on top, Clare began to build up momentum and this was translated in to scores as the visitors added a further two goals and a point in the closing stages to stage an unlikely but successful comeback, winning on a scorelinne of Clare 3-8 Tipperary 4-4
