ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE

Heading to Ennis so early in the year was never going to be an easy task and so it proved to be as the Tipperary hurlers came up that little bit short in losing their opening Allianz League Division 1A to Clare 1-21 to 0-19. An injury time goal either way would secure a win and as it turned out it was the home side that prevailed such was the closeness of the contest throughout.

Not the result you’d like on your debut but nonetheless congratulations to Paul Maher (Moyne-Templetuohy), Tom Fox (Éire Óg Annacarty-Donohill) and Ger Browne (Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams) on lining out for what we hope will be the first of many occasions for those young men in the senior ranks with the blue and gold.

With the Clare result now boxed off the focus turns immediately to next weekend as Tipperary welcome Waterford to Semple Stadium on Saturday evening, February 3rd for a second round clash which throws in at 7pm. With Waterford also failing to triumph on Sunday, this second round fixture will be eagerly watched in many ways. Tipp in the first of three home games will certainly look to bounce back with a win while the Deise likewise too will be pushing hard knowing points gained away from home will be hard earned. After all, they were the only home side of the 3 Division 1A games played to lose last weekend.

So a brief history of rivalry between the sides show there has been 45 League meetings of Tipperary and Waterford, with the Premier County ahead on 33 wins, while the Déise won 9 and there have been 3 draws.

Of the last 10 meetings Tipperary have won 6, Waterford 3 and just the one draw, with the results reading as follows;  6/4/2008 at Nowlan Park – Tipperary 1-16 Waterford 0-14 (Quarter-final), 8/2/2009 at
Walsh Park  – Tipperary 2-13 Waterford 1-12; 28/3/2010 at Semple Stadium – Tipperary 1-19 Waterford 2-16; 5/3/2011 at Semple Stadium – Tipperary 1-20 Waterford 0-18; 18/3/2012 at Semple Stadium – Tipperary 0-31 Waterford 2-15; 24/3/2013 at Walsh Park – Waterford 1-14 Tipperary 0-16; 15/2/2014 at Semple Stadium – Tipperary 2-13 Waterford 0-16; 19/4/2015 at Nowlan Park – Waterford 1-19 Tipperary 2-15 (Semi Final); 6/3/2016 at Semple Stadium – Waterford 1-18 Tipperary 1-17 and finally last year 19/2/2017 at Walsh Park – Tipperary 1-18 Waterford 0-15.

Best wishes to the team and management again this weekend as Semple Stadium holds centre stage. The referee on Saturday will be Colm Lyons (Corcaigh).

Tickets are on sale at GAA.IE, selected SuperValu and Centra stores and usual outlets – adults €15 and U16’s go free. Buy before match day and get 20% off adult tickets.

ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The highlight of last weekend no doubt belongs to the Tipperary footballers who deservedly won their opening Allianz Football League Division 2 match against Cork on a score line of 3-16 to 1-16.

In what was an historic night in the redeveloped Páirc Uí Chaoimh Tipperary will hold the honour as the first team to win an intercounty football match in the stadium. Congratulations to Liam McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney) who scored 2-5 in a Man of the Match performance, the other goal came courtesy of an inspiring finish by Michael Quinlivan (Clonmel Commercials). Left Liam McGrath receives his Eir Sport Man of the Match award from Shane Stapleton.

Congratulations also to John Meagher (Loughmore-Castleiney) and Brendan Martin (Kilsheelan-Kilcash) on making their senior debut.

Next up is a home tie this weekend in Semple Stadium when Tipp welcome Connaught champions Roscommon to the Field of Legends on Sunday next, February 4th where throw in is at 2pm.

We send best wishes to the team and management once again and appeal to all supporters to come out in force to support the side in what should be a fascinating tussle. The referee will be Noel Mooney (An Cabhán).

Tickets are on sale at GAA.IE, selected SuperValu and Centra stores and usual outlets – adults €15 and U16’s go free, buy before match day and get 20% off adult tickets.

REFEREE

Best wishes to our referees in action this weekend where first up Derek O’Mahoney takes charge of the Allianz Football League Division 1fixture between Mayo and Kerry on Saturday evening. Then on Sunday next Sean Lonergan (Moyle Rovers) is in the middle when Waterford and Antrim meet in their Allianz Football League Division 4 encounter.

An initial trial Fitness Test, i.e. a “BANGSBO or BeepTest” will be used to familiarise new entrants with the levels required. A standard test will be used later in the year to monitor progression with a view to the achievement of a minimum standard required for qualification.

Following completion of the Training Course the successful candidate is certified as qualified by Coiste Ríaracháin Réiteoirí Contae Tiobrad Árann as a Club Level Referee. It is recommended for foundation referees to be appointed to referee games up to and including U14 for a period of 2 years.
