2026 FBD Insurance County Football Championships

It was a busy and exciting weekend of club championship action in Tipperary, with county titles decided across several grades.

Senior Football Championship

Loughmore Castleiney claimed their 17th County Senior Football title last Sunday at FBD Semple Stadium following a hard-earned 0-15 to 0-13 victory over Clonmel Commercials. A tight game throughout, with little separating two evenly matched sides, the opening twenty minutes saw both teams trade scores. A Liam McGrath two-pointer late in the first half helped Loughmore Castleiney stretch their advantage to three points as they led 0-9 to 0-6 at the interval. Clonmel Commercials fought back and a Peter McGarry two pointer brought the sides level at 0-11 apiece in the 42nd minute. There was still nothing between the teams five minutes from the end, with the sides level at 0-13 each, before late scores from Joey Quinn and John McGrath secured victory for Loughmore Castleiney.

Loughmore Castleiney’s Liam McGrath, who finished with 0-7, was named Man of the Match. He received his award after the game from Derek and Trisha Cagney of Quirke Trophies Ltd, sponsors of the Man of the Match award.

The Philly Ryan Cup was presented for the first time on Sunday, marking the first anniversary of the passing of former Tipperary football manager and player Philly Ryan. Philly’s wife Anna presented the newly introduced trophy to Loughmore Castleiney captain Brian McGrath following the club’s victory.

Loughmore Castleiney will now represent Tipperary in the Munster Senior Club Football Championship facing the Cork champions (Nemo Rangers or St Finbarrs) on Sunday 8th November in the Quarter Final.

Congratulations to Loughmore Castleiney’s Liam McGrath who was named Man of the Match in the County Senior Football Final. He is pictured receiving his award from Man of the Match sponsor Derek Cagney of Quirke Trophies Ltd.

Intermediate Football Championship

The FBD Insurance County Intermediate Football Championship Final took place as the curtain raiser at FBD Semple Stadium last Sunday with Killenaule overcoming Golden Kilfeacle by 2-11 to 0-14 to claim the title for the second time in their history, having previously won it in 2004.

Golden Kilfeacle made an impressive start, displaying some fast and direct running to register the opening two points inside the first two minutes. They also had an opportunity to extend their advantage from the penalty spot but failed to convert. Killenaule gradually settled into the contest and the sides remained closely matched throughout the first half. However, a point from Michael Doyle and a two pointer from Paudie Feehan, helped Killenaule establish a three point advantage at the interval – leading by 0-8 to 0-5. Killenaule strengthened their position early in the second half when an excellent goal from Killian O’Dwyer extended their lead. The South Tipperary side held a seven point advantage with ten minutes remaining but Golden Kilfeacle responded well. A two pointer from the impressive Jack Leamy during a Golden purple patch reduced the deficit to just three points and shifting the momentum in Golden’s favour. However, O’Dwyer struck again with his second goal of the afternoon with four minutes remaining, restoring Killenaule’s cushion. A further two pointer from Leamy in injury time ensured a tense finish but Killenaule held firm to secure victory.

Victorious captain Jimmy Feehan accepted the cup on behalf of Killenaule while goal scorer Killian O’Dwyer was named Man of the Match. He received his award from Derek and Trisha Cagney of Quirke Trophies Ltd, sponsors of the Man of the Match award.

Killenaule now advance to the Munster Intermediate Football Championship, where they will face the Limerick champions, either Galbally or Na Piarsaigh, in the Quarter Final on Sunday 8th November.

Congratulations to Killenaule centre back Killian O’Dwyer who was named Man of the Match in the County Intermediate Football Final. He is pictured receiving his award from Trisha and Derek Cagney of Quirke Trophies Ltd.

The Fethard 2001 team were honoured as the Jubilee Team last Sunday at FBD Semple Stadium during the interval between the Intermediate and Senior Football Finals. Junior ‘A’ Football Championship

The Junior ‘A’ County Final took place last Saturday with Boherlahan Dualla claiming the title for the third time in their history following a 3-8 to 2-6 victory over Ballylooby Castlegrace. Their previous successes came in 1951 and 1996. Boherlahan Dualla held the advantage for much of the contest and led by 2-2 to 0-5 at half time thanks to goals from Niall O’Dwyer and Eoin Moloughney. Ballylooby Castlegrace fought back in the second half with William Dunne converting a penalty to bring the sides level at 2-3 to 1-6. However, Boherlahan Dualla finished strongly, with Moloughney grabbing his second goal to extend his side’s advantage. Ballylooby added a late consolation goal through Conor Lonergan but Boherlahan Dualla held on to secure the county title. Junior ‘B’ Football Championship

Both Semi Finals of the County Junior ‘B’ Football Championship took place last Saturday with Thurles Gaels and Upperchurch Drombane progressing to the Final, which will be a repeat of the Mid Final. Thurles Gaels edged past Rosegreen by the narrowest of margins, winning 1-9 to 1-8 in a closely contested encounter. The sides were level at 0-5 apiece at half time before Thurles Gaels eventually secured victory by a single point. In the second Semi Final, Upperchurch Drombane proved too strong for Solohead. The Mid side led by 1-7 to 0-7 at half time and produced an excellent second half performance to seal a 2-16 to 1-11 victory. The County Junior ‘B’ Football Championship Final will take place on Saturday 31st October (please note change in date) at 2.00 pm in The Ragg.

2026 FBD Insurance County Hurling Championships

Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship

The FBD Insurance County Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship Final takes place this Saturday at 1.30 pm in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh. The decider will see an allNorth clash as neighbours Ballina and Newport meet for the third time in this year’s championship. Ballina have come out on top in both previous encounters, recording a 0-25 to 0-14 victory over Newport in Round 2 of the group stages before defeating them again in the Final, winning by 4-14 to 0-15. Both clubs will be eager to make history, with Ballina and Newport each bidding to claim their first ever County Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship title.

Junior ‘C’ Hurling Championship

The inaugural County Junior ‘C’ Hurling Championship Final took place last Saturday in The Ragg, with Ballina claiming the title following a dramatic 1-14 to 2-10 victory over Ballingarry. Ballingarry held the advantage for much of the contest and led by five points at half time, 1-6 to 0-4, thanks in part to an early goal from Paddy Burns. Their lead was extended further in the 41st minute when Kieran Lyons found the net to put Ballingarry 2-8 to 0-6 ahead. However, Ballina gradually chipped away at the deficit and, with Ballingarry still three points clear approaching the closing stages, David Hickey struck a crucial goal to bring the sides level. Hickey then converted a free shortly afterwards to edge Ballina in front and secure a memorable victory in the first ever County Junior ‘C’ Hurling Championship Final. Eoin Kent had the honour of captaining the victorious Ballina side.

Minor Championships

Newport claimed the County Minor ‘A’ Hurling title for the first time in their history following an impressive 4-19 to 2-9 victory over St Mary’s last Tuesday (13th October) at FBD Semple Stadium. Newport produced a ruthless performance to make amends for the heartbreak of last year’s County Final defeat. They dominated from the outset, building a commanding 1-12 to 0-2 lead by half time with James Ryan scoring an excellent goal. Charlie Tobin added Newport’s second goal before Harry Noone and Cormac Shanahan struck further goals to seal an emphatic victory. Ben Fuller and Conor Landers replied with goals for St Mary’s but Newport remained firmly in control throughout. Kevin Fitzpatrick had the honour of captaining the victorious Newport side.

Aherlow Gaels struggled to contain the Moyle Rovers attack with Conal Morrison and Aaron McAndrew both finding the net twice while Conal Egan and Joe O’Donovan also scored goals to complete a commanding performance.
