This week’s Tipperary GAA Scene.
Tipperary Senior Hurlers
Best of luck to the Senior Hurlers who commence their Allianz Hurling League campaign this coming Saturday 24 January at 7.00pm in FBD Semple Stadium where they will host Galway.
Looking back at the last five League meetings between Tipperary and Galway, recent history slightly favours Tipperary, with three wins from those encounters.
Tipperary were convincing winners in their most recent clash, which came in Round 1 of last year’s League, as they ran out 3-25 to 2-16 winners. They will be hoping to repeat a similar out when the sides meet again this Saturday. That victory followed another strong League performance in Round 2 of 2024, where Tipp edged Galway by 1-26 to 0-24. In 2021, Tipperary also came out on top, recording a 2-19 to 0-20 win in Round 3.
Galway, however, have enjoyed success in two of the last five League meetings. They claimed a high-scoring Round 3 victory in 2020, winning 3-21 to 3-13, and also got the better of Tipperary in the 2017 League Final, with a decisive 3-21 to 0-14 result.
The remaining group stage fixtures for Tipperary are as follows:
Round 2 – Sunday February 1st – Tipperary vs Offaly at 2pm in Glenisk O’Connor Park, Tullamore
Round 3 – Saturday February 7th – Tipperary vs Cork at 7.30pm in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh
Round 4 – Saturday February 21st – Tipperary vs Limerick at 5.30pm in FBD Semple Stadium
Round 5 – Sunday March 8th – Tipperary vs Waterford at 3.15pm in Azzurri Walsh Park, Waterford
Round 6 – Saturday March 21st – Tipperary vs Kilkenny at 7pm in FBD Semple Stadium
Tipperary Senior Footballers
Best of luck to the Senior Footballers who commence their Allianz Football League campaign this coming Sunday 25 January at 1.00pm in McGovern Park, Ruislip where they will face London.
Tipperary and London have met five times in Division 4 since 2013. The sides shared the spoils in 2024, drawing 0-11 to 1-8, while Tipperary have enjoyed the better of the recent history with three wins — in 2022, 2014 and 2013. London’s sole victory in that run came in 2025, when they edged Tipperary by a point, 2-12 to 0-17, and Tipperary will be looking to gain revenge this weekend.
The remaining group stage fixtures for Tipperary are as follows:
Round 2 – Sunday February 1st – Tipperary vs Antrim at 2pm in FBD Semple Stadium
Round 3 – Sunday February 15th – Tipperary vs Carlow at 2pm in FBD Semple Stadium
Round 4 – Sunday February 22nd – Tipperary vs Longford at 2pm in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford
Round 5 – Sunday March 1st – Tipperary vs Leitrim at 2pm in FBD Semple Stadium
Round 6 – Sunday March 15th – Tipperary vs Wicklow at 2pm in Echelon Park, Aughrim
Round 7 – Sunday March 22nd – Tipperary vs Waterford at 1pm in FBD Semple Stadium

Schools
Nenagh CBS and Thurles CBS played out an excellent game of hurling last Saturday in Templederry in the TUS Dr Harty Cup Semi Final (Munster Under 19 ‘A’ Hurling), with Nenagh edging the contest on a 1-18 to 0-20 scoreline. There was great talent on show from both sides, with little to separate them throughout.
A well taken Eanna Tucker goal, the only goal of the game, gave Nenagh the lead in the 19th minute at 1-6 to 0-7. Thurles finished the half strongly, however, scoring four points without reply to take a 0-11 to 1-7 lead at the interval.
Thurles found themselves three points clear early in the second half, thanks in part to some excellent shooting from Tiarnan Ryan, but Nenagh had the sides level by the 48th minute through the impressive Eoghan Doughan. The teams then traded scores for the remainder of the game. An outstanding long-range Jack Cahill free for Thurles looked to be sending the match to extra time, but Eoghan Doughan stepped up to slot a Nenagh free deep into injury time to secure victory.
Commiserations to Thurles CBS, who put in a brilliant effort throughout. The very best of luck to Nenagh CBS, who face St Flannan’s in the Final on Saturday 31 January.
Well done to St Joseph’s, Borrisoleigh on progressing to the Final of the Munster Under 19 ‘C’ Hurling Competition (TUS Corn Risteard Uí Mhathúna) following an excellent Semi Final victory over Coláiste an Phiarsaigh Glanmire last Friday. The final score was 1-17 to 0-10. Toomevara clubman Cody Quirke scored St Joseph’s crucial goal early in the game, giving his side a brilliant start. They went on to build a strong lead and were ahead by 1-9 to 0-5 at half-time. St Joseph’s will face Dungarvan CBS in the Final which is set to take place on Saturday 31 January.
Well done to High School Clonmel who had a fantastic 1-6 to 0-5 victory over Clonakilty Community College last Wednesday 14 January in Páirc Uí Rinn in the Corn Uí Mhuirí Munster Senior ‘A’ Football Quarter Final. Played in dreadful conditions, this was never likely to be a high-scoring contest, but a clinical first half from the High School proved decisive. The Tipperary school led 1-4 to 0-1 at the break, with Andrew McAndrew’s goal in the opening minutes giving them the edge. They held firm after the restart to secure a four point victory
They will now face Presentation SS Milltown in the Semi Final which takes place this coming Saturday 24 January 12.30 pm in Kilmallock.

Munster Junior ‘B’ Championship
Well done to Silvermines who defeated Ballyclough (Cork) last Saturday in Killeedy Limerick in the Semi Final of the Munster Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship. The Mines’ were victorious on a 1-20 to 0-11 scoreline.
Silvermines were on top from early on and led 0-11 to 0-6 at half time. Their goal arrived in the 50th minute through Ger Leamy, as they held out for an impressive victory. Ger was later named Man of the Match.
They will now face Ballybrown of Limerick in the Final on the weekend of 31 January / 1 February. This will be the fourth consecutive year that the final sees the Tipperary champions take on Limerick opposition.
In January 2023, Bruff defeated Thurles Sarsfields by 0-10 to 1-6. Drom & Inch claimed the Munster title in February 2024, with three Paul Kennedy injury time goals securing a dramatic 3-8 to 1-13 victory over Monaleen. Last February, Kildimo-Pallaskenry overcame Cappawhite on a 3-8 to 1-13 scoreline.
Meanwhile, Golden Kilfeacle will compete in the football equivalent, taking place in Knockaderry, Limerick, on Sunday 1 February, where they will face Clooney-Quin (Clare) at the Quarter Final stage.

Sympathy
Tipperary GAA wish to express their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Noel ‘Barney’ Hogan, Roscrea who passed away recently.
Noel captained the Tipperary Minor hurlers during the 1961 championship campaign, defeating Cork in the Munster Final before progressing to the All-Ireland Final where Tipperary were narrowly beaten by Kilkenny. Noel lined out at right corner forward in the All-Ireland decider.
The previous year in 1960, Barney was a Munster Minor title winner, memorably scoring two goals in the Munster Final victory. He later added an All-Ireland Under 21 medal in 1964 when Tipperary defeated Wexford in the final having overcome Waterford in the Munster Final.
At club level, Noel enjoyed an outstanding career with Roscrea. In 1961, he captained the club to North and County Minor titles. He went on to win an All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling title in 1971 along with two Munster Senior Club Hurling medals, four Tipperary Senior Hurling Championships and six North Tipperary Senior Hurling titles in addition to a large collection of underage honours.
It was a truly impressive hurling career and a legacy that will be fondly remembered.
May Noel ‘Barney’ Hogan rest in peace.
Tipperary GAA wish to express their sincere sympathy to Billy Coman (Tipperary Supporters Club Secretary) and his family on the recent passing of his mother, Chrissie Coman (Thurles). May she rest in peace.
Tipperary GAA also wish to express their sympathy to the Coen family (Clonoulty Rossmore) on the recent passing of Liam Coen. May he rest in peace.
