Tipperary Senior Footballers
Well done to the Tipperary Senior Footballers who had a hard earned 0-17 to 1-12 victory over Sligo last Sunday in Round 1 of the Tailteann Cup. Seán O’Connor was the standout performer with six points from play as Tipp dominated the kick out battle and built a strong first half lead with four two pointers, including two from O’Connor and further efforts from Micheál Freaney and Daithí Hogan. Tipp led 0-11 to 1-4 at half time despite a late Sligo goal. Sligo mounted a late rally in the second half and reduced the deficit to two points but Tipp held firm with important scores from Charlie King and Joe Higgins to secure victory.

Tipperary Senior Hurlers
Tipperary senior hurlers return to action this Saturday 16th May when they host Clare in FBD Semple Stadium with throw in at 7.00 pm. The game will be live on GAA+ and Tipp FM. A large crowd is expected so supporters are urged to leave in plenty of time. Please take into account potential delays due to roadworks, particularly for those travelling from the Nenagh road to Thurles. Supporters are asked to download their tickets in advance to their phone or print them as screenshots will not be accepted for entry. Please park responsibly, follow steward/Gardai directions and be mindful of local residents at all times.
Supporters are encouraged to arrive early as the Tipperary Senior Camogie team take on Waterford at 4.45 pm in FBD Semple Stadium in the Munster Final, providing a great opportunity to get behind the camogie team before the senior hurling clash.
The counties have met 59 times previously in the championship with Tipperary leading the head to head record on 40 wins to Clare’s 15 while there have also been four draws. Remarkably, only one championship meeting between the sides failed to produce a goal – the 2001 Munster Semi Final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh which Tipp won 0-15 to 0-14 on their way to securing the Munster, All-Ireland and League titles that season. Overall, Tipperary have scored 165 goals in the fixture compared to Clare’s 94.
Looking back at the last five championship meetings, Tipperary hold a slight edge with three wins to Clare’s two. Tipp claimed a thrilling 4-18 to 2-21 victory in Ennis last year while Clare’s most recent visit to Thurles ended in a 1-24 to 0-24 win in 2024. Tipperary also recorded a 5-22 to 3-23 victory in Ennis during the 2023 group stages while Clare were winners in Thurles the previous year by 3-21 to 2-16 (continuing with the trend of the away teams being victorious in this fixture in recent years). The sides also met in the 2021 Munster Semi Final at the TUS Gaelic Grounds where Tipp emerged victorious on a 3-23 to 2-22 scoreline. With plenty of high scoring and closely fought encounters in recent years, another exciting clash is expected this Saturday evening in Thurles.

Tipperary Under 20 Footballers
Hard luck to the Tipperary Under 20 Footballers who were defeated on penalties by Sligo last Sunday in the Semi Final of the Dalata Hotel Group All-Ireland Under 20 ‘B’ Championship. Sligo made the ideal start with a goal inside the opening minute but Tipp responded well and the sides were level at 1-3 to 0-6 after the first quarter. The teams continued to trade scores for the remainder of the half leaving it 0-11 to 1-8 at the break.
Tipp stretched their lead to four points midway through the second half and still held the advantage entering the closing minutes but a Sligo goal on 57 minutes reduced the deficit to one before the hosts added an equaliser to make it 0-20 to 2-14. A Liam Freaney two pointer helped Tipp into a 0-25 to 2-16 lead at half time in extra time, though Sligo responded strongly again to draw level midway through the second period. A Charlie Walsh free edged Tipp back in front but Sligo equalised once more to force penalties after the game finished 0-26 to 2-20. Despite an excellent standard of penalties from both sides, Tipp were unlucky as Walsh’s effort went over the bar with Sligo progressing to the final on a 5-3 shootout scoreline. It was a cruel way for the campaign to end after a tremendous effort from the players throughout the year. Many thanks to Paddy O’Gorman and his management team for their work and commitment.

Tipperary Under 20 Hurlers
Best of luck to the Tipperary Under 20 hurlers who will take on Clare this Wednesday 13th May at 7.35pm in the TUS Gaelic Grounds in the Final of the Fulfil Munster Under 20 Hurling Championship.
This will be the 11th meeting of the counties at the Munster Under 20/21 final stage. Tipperary have won eight of the previous deciders with Clare claiming victory on two occasions. The sides also met in last year’s Final where Tipperary recorded a 3-19 to 1-20 victory with goals from Cathal English, Oisín O’Donoghue and Darragh McCarthy. The counties first met in a Munster Under 21 final in 1972 with Tipperary emerging victorious. Tipp added further final wins over Clare in the 1980s (83, 85) and 1990s (95,99) before claiming titles again in 2008 and 2010. Clare responded with back to back final victories over Tipperary in 2012 and 2013.
Tickets for the game are available online through the Munster GAA website while tap-and-go payment will also be available at the venue. The game will be broadcast live on TG4 and Tipp FM.

Tipperary Minor Hurlers
Tipperary Minor Hurlers maintained their unbeaten run in the Munster Championship with an impressive 3-17 to 1-17 victory over Waterford last Friday. After a closely contested opening quarter, a Rian McGrath goal in the 18th minute gave Tipp a three point lead. Tipp stretched their advantage to seven points approaching half time, but a Cian Delaney goal for Waterford before the break left the Déise still in contention as Tipp led 1-11 to 1-6 at the interval.
Waterford reduced the deficit to two points during the second half but a second goal from Rian McGrath on 47 minutes proved crucial in restoring Tipp’s control. Waterford continued to battle until the finish before a late Josh Moroney goal rounded off the scoring and secured another win for Tipp.

There have been 17 previous Munster Minor Hurling Finals between the counties with Tipperary winning 13 and Limerick winning four. The first final meeting came in 1953 when Tipp claimed a 3-11 to 3-3 victory with Rahealty’s Billy Quinn serving as victorious captain. That success marked the first of four Munster final wins over Limerick during the 1950s. Limerick responded with final victories in 1963 and 1965 before Tipp enjoyed further success against the Treaty County in 1973, 1976, 1980, 1982 and 1983. Limerick won the 1984 decider while Tipp later claimed titles in 1991, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Limerick were victorious in the most recent Final meeting between the sides in 2020 on a 2-22 to 0-25 scoreline.

Tipperary Minor Footballers
Hard luck to the Tipperary Minor Footballers who lost out to Longford on a 1-16 to 1-9 scoreline last Saturday in Templemore in the Preliminary Quarter Final of the Tier 3 All Ireland Minor Football Championship. A Conor O’Meara goal helped Tipperary into a 1-3 to 0-4 lead after 21 minutes with Reuben Grace extending the advantage soon after as Tipp looked in control. However, two superb two pointers from Longford’s Eoin Beattie swung momentum before Senan Buckley struck for a goal on the stroke of half time to leave Longford leading 1-8 to 1-4 at the break. Tipp responded strongly with the aid of the breeze and levelled at 1-9 apiece through scores from O’Meara, Charlie Brazil, Tiernan Power and a Hugh Carolan two pointer but they failed to score again as Longford finished strongly to secure victory.

Celtic Challenge
Both Tipperary Gold and Tipperary Blue were in action last weekend in the Division 1 Corn Michael Hogan Quarter Finals.
Tipperary Gold travelled to face a strong Kilkenny side last Saturday afternoon. Kilkenny held a 1-9 to 0-3 lead at half time and Tipp were unable to reduce the deficit in the second half as the Cats ran out 1-20 to 0-8 winners.
Tipperary Blue hosted Wexford last Sunday evening in Templemore. Wexford made a flying start and led 2-3 to 0-5 after the opening quarter before taking a 2-7 to 0-11 advantage into the break. Tipp drew level by the third quarter at 1-12 to 2-9 thanks to a Charlie Lawlor goal and finished strongly to secure a hard earned 1-16 to 2-11 victory. They will now face Clare Blue in the Semi Final at a Clare venue on Saturday, 23 May.

FBD Insurance County Leagues
The majority of the games in Round 5 of the County Hurling League took place last weekend.
In Division 1 Group 1, Nenagh Éire Óg secured a three point win over Drom-Inch finishing 1-17 to 0-17 while Borris-Ileigh proved too strong for JK Brackens with an impressive 4-20 to 1-21 victory. Clonoulty Rossmore will host Kiladangan this coming Saturday at 3.00pm in Clonoulty. Clonoulty Rossmore will need a big win to dislodge Kiladangan from top spot in the group with the top placed team progressing straight to the Division 1 final.
Division 1 Group 2 produced a number of high scoring encounters. Thurles Sarsfields overcame Moycarkey Borris on a 1-24 to 2-13 scoreline while Kilruane MacDonaghs delivered one of the performances of the round defeating Holycross Ballycahill by 1-34 to 1-20. Toomevara edged a very tight contest with Cashel King Cormacs winning 0-19 to 0-18. With the group stage complete, Cashel King Cormacs have finished top of the group and will progress to the Semi Final.
In Division 1 Group 3, Gortnahoe-Glengoole were convincing winners over CJK Mullinahone, recording a 3-27 to 1-20 victory. Carrick Swan also impressed as they defeated Upperchurch-Drombane by 2-23 to 0-17. Roscrea host Loughmore Castleiney this coming Sunday at 11 am with Roscrea needing a victory to top the group. Carrick Swan currently lead the standings on seven points with Roscrea on six. Either Carrick Swan or Roscrea will face Cashel King Cormacs in the Division 1 Semi Final.
Division 2 Group 1 saw Ballina account for Boherlahan Dualla on a 1-20 to 0-16 scoreline. Lorrha Dorrha and St. Mary’s served up an entertaining clash with Lorrha eventually prevailing by 3-23 to 2-23 while Killenaule defeated Burgess by 1-20 to 1-17. Killenaule play St. Mary’s in the final game in the group this Sunday at 12 noon. A Killenaule victory will secure top spot in the group with Boherlahan Dualla finishing second. A St. Mary’s win will mean Killenaule will still top the group with Lorrha Dorrha finishing second.
In Division 2 Group 2, Clonakenny edged Éire Óg Annacarty in a closely fought contest winning 1-19 to 1-18. Moneygall were also victorious as they overcame Templederry Kenyons on a 3-18 to 0-17 scoreline. Éire Óg Annacarty are guaranteed top spot in the group finishing on eight points. The remaining Semi Final spot from the group is still up for grabs with Moneygall, Clonakenny and Moyne Templetouhy still in contention with two games still yet to be played in the group.
Division 3 Group 1, Silvermines and Cappawhite finished level on 1-17 to 3-11 while Portroe proved too strong for Golden Kilfeacle winning 2-21 to 0-18. Kilsheelan Kilcash host Portroe this coming Sunday at 12 noon in the final game in the group. A Portroe victory will lead to them topping the group ahead of Golden Kilfeacle who will finish second. A Kilsheelan victory will mean Golden will top the group ahead of Portroe.
In Division 3 Group 2, Sean Treacys and Knockavilla Kickhams could not be separated as both sides finished level on 2-22 and 3-19 respectively. Newport and Shannon Rovers also shared the spoils after their encounter ended 1-20 to 2-17 while Arravale Rovers narrowly defeated Borrisokane by 0-17 to 1-12. Sean Treacys host Borrisokane this coming Sunday at 12 noon in the final group game. A Sean Treacys victory would see them top the group with Arravale Rovers finishing second. A Borrisokane win would leave Arravale Rovers top with Knockavilla Kickhams taking second place. If Sean Treacys draw with Borrisokane, qualification will be decided on score difference between Sean Treacys and Knockavilla Kickhams. The top two teams in each group will face each other in the Semi Finals.
Division 4 saw Thurles Sarsfields (3) produce a 0-25 to 1-17 victory against Moyle Rovers. Holycross Ballycahill v Toomevara and St. Patricks v Clonoulty Rossmore took place on Tuesday 12th May with no result at time of going to print. First will play fourth and second will play third in the Division 4 Semi Finals.
In Division 5 Group 1, Carrick Davins were convincing winners over Ballinahinch, recording a 1-22 to 0-13 victory while Ballybacon Grange edged out Cahir by 1-16 to 0-15. Rockwell Rovers also claimed victory over Moycarkey Borris winning 1-18 to 2-10. There are games still to be played in this group with the top team progressing straight into the Final yet to be determined.
Division 5 Group 2 saw Carrick Swan prove too strong for Gortnahoe Glengoole emerging 4-23 to 1-13 winners. There are still games left to be played in this group but Cashel King Cormacs have secured top spot in the group and a place in the Semi Finals.
In Division 5 Group 3, Grangemockler Ballyneale overcame Fr. Sheehys on a 3-17 to 2-16 scoreline. Fethard hosted Ballylooby Castlegrace on Monday evening last while Boherlahan Dualla hosted Kilruane MacDonaghs on Tuesday with no results at time of going to print so top spot in this group and a Semi Final spot v Cashel is yet to be determined.
In Division 6 Group 1, Killea recorded a strong 1-22 to 1-11 victory over Rosegreen, while Clerihan defeated St. Patrick’s by 2-19 to 1-9. This group has now been finalised with Clerihan finishing top and have secured a place straight to the Final.
Division 6 Group 2 saw Cappawhite deliver an excellent scoring display in their 5-23 to 3-6 win over Cahir. Moyne Templetuohy also came out on top against Ballingarry, winning 2-18 to 1-14. Moyne Templetouhy have secured top spot in the group and a Semi Final spot.
In Division 6 Group 3, Kilruane MacDonaghs proved too strong for Ballybacon Grange with a convincing 5-22 to 2-1 victory. Gortnahoe Glengoole defeated Thurles Gaels by 3-15 to 0-13 while Killenaule had a 3-20 to 1-12 win over Skeheenarinky. Killenaule finished top of Group 3 and will face Moyne Templetouhy in the Semi Final.
