Tipperary Minor Hurlers

The Tipperary Minor Hurlers have qualified for the Electric Ireland All Ireland Minor Hurling Final following an exciting 5-18 to 2-19 Semi Final victory over Cork last Saturday at TUS Gaelic Grounds.

Cork made the stronger start to the contest and were rewarded with a well taken goal from Bobby Power in the fifth minute. The Rebels continued to hold the upper hand and led by four points after 18 minutes. Tipperary’s first goal arrived in the 20th minute when Eanna Tucker reacted quickest to a rebound following a KJ Dunne effort. The Premier County struck for another goal almost immediately afterwards with Christ Dunne finding the net to put Tipp two points in front. Tipperary carried that momentum into the interval and led by 2-8 to 1-9 at half time. Cork regained the lead in the 40th minute when Bobby Power scored his second goal of the game. Two further points followed as Cork opened up a 2-14 to 2-10 advantage by the 42nd minute.

However, Tipperary produced a superb final quarter, outscoring their opponents by 3-8 to 0-5. A Josh Moroney goal midway through the second half ignited the Tipp challenge before Christ Dunne struck for his second goal in the 51st minute to restore Tipp’s lead. Dunne completed a remarkable hat trick just two minutes later as Tipperary seized control of the game. A strong finish, highlighted by three late points in quick succession from Eanna Tucker helped seal a memorable victory and book Tipperary’s place in the All Ireland Minor Hurling Final.

Congratulations to Chris Dunne who was named the Electric Ireland Player of the Match after the game.

County Football League

St. Patrick’s claimed the Division 3 Football Title last Thursday in Cloneen following a hard earned 1-8 to 0-8 victory over neighbours Ballingarry. Played in difficult wet conditions, the game was always likely to be a low scoring affair with both defences on top for long periods. Ballingarry held a narrow 0-5 to 0-4 advantage at half time after edging a closely contested opening half. St. Patrick’s made an excellent start to the second period registering the first two scores after the restart to move into the lead. They extended their advantage to four points in the 41st minute when Tipperary senior footballer Dáithí Hogan produced the key score of the game finishing brilliantly to the net. Ballingarry continued to battle and reduced the deficit to two points thanks to a two point free from the impressive Adrian Cleere. However, St. Patrick’s remained composed in the closing stages and held on to secure the title.

Clerihan produced a terrific second half performance in Rosegreen last Sunday afternoon to claim the Division 4 Football Title overcoming Rockwell Rovers on a 2-14 to 0-17 scoreline. Rockwell Rovers were hugely impressive during the opening half and appeared to be in a commanding position at the break. Led by the influential former Tipperary senior footballer Alan Moloney, the West side built up a 0-11 to 0-3 advantage by half time. Clerihan still trailed by eight points midway through the second half before beginning a remarkable comeback. The turnaround was sparked by a superb goal from Conor Parker which gave the South side renewed belief. A second goal followed a few minutes later when Harry Hickey found the net to put Clerihan into the lead for the first time. The closing stages were tightly contested with both sides exchanging points but Clerihan showed great composure to hold on for a memorable victory and secure the title.

County Hurling League

The Division 1 Hurling Final of the FBD Insurance County League produced an excellent contest last Sunday with Cashel King Cormacs emerging victorious over Kiladangan on a 4-19 to 1-27 scoreline in The Ragg. Cashel made the perfect start when Cathal Quinn found the net after just six minutes. Kiladangan responded quickly through a goal from Seán Hayes and aided by the breeze enjoyed the better of the opening half. They led by seven points after 20 minutes before a Ger Browne goal reduced the deficit for Cashel. Kiladangan held a 1-17 to 2-11 advantage at the interval and maintained their lead for much of the second half. However, Cashel finished strongly in the closing stages. A David McGrath goal in the 50th minute brought the sides level before Cathal Quinn struck his second goal of the game three minutes later to put Cashel ahead by 4-18 to 1-24. Cashel carried a three point lead into injury time. Kiladangan narrowed the gap with two late points but time ran out before they could find an equaliser  as Cashel King Cormacs held on to secure the Johnny Ryan Cup.

There was also an entertaining contest in the Division 2 Hurling Final which took place in Littleton last Friday with Killenaule emerging victorious over Boherlahan Dualla on a 0-22 to 1-15 scoreline. Boherlahan Dualla made the stronger start with a well-taken goal from Paddy Gahan in just the second minute. However, with the aid of the wind, Killenaule gradually worked their way into the game and held a 0-14 to 1-8 lead at half time. Boherlahan Dualla battled back in the second half and reduced the deficit to a single point midway through the period. Despite the pressure, Killenaule responded well and maintained their advantage in the closing stages, with Boherlahan unable to get any closer. At the final whistle, Killenaule had done enough to secure the Jim Devitt Cup with captain Killian O’Dwyer accepting the trophy on behalf of his team.
