HOWARD’S HAT-TRICK BLITZES CLARE

TIPPERARY 5-11 CLARE 0-01

Tipperary’s Roisin Howard scored a hat-trick of goals in Tipperary’s comprehensive defeat of Clare in round 1 of the All Ireland Minor A Championship I the Ragg Camogie grounds on Sunday 9/2/2014,this win puts down a marker that Tipperary’s minors will be a team to be feared this year.

Tipperary put Clare on the back foot from the throw-in with the Clare defence under severe pressure But for some fine goalkeeping from Lauren Solon (who was Clare’s outstanding player) Tipp could have goaled twice in the first minutes of the match.Tipperary’s first point came from a Niamh Treacy free after seven minutes this was followed by a point from Tipperary’s Sinead Buckley then a minute later a fine point from distance by Courtney Ryan who then followed up with another fine point, this led to a period of total domination and some great passages of play from Tipperary culminating in three points by all of Tipperary’s full forwards in three minutes Miriam Campion started the scoring spree then Niamh Treacy followed by Sinead Buckley getting her second score .Two minutes later Rosin Howard who had been very lively all afternoon scored the first of her three goals with a powerful shot. Tipperary’s captain Mairead Teehan and Lorna O’Dwyer were totally dominating midfield and alongside Jenny Grace were orchestrating all of Tipperarys attacks and further points by Niamh Treacy, Miriam Campion and Lorna O’Dwyer ended a very one sided first half with Tipperary leading 1-10 to Clare’s no score.

Clare started with a bit more purpose in the second half but found the Tipperary defence hard to breakdown and continued to to put up some resistance in defence with the Clare goalie making some good saves. However Tipperary’s Rosin Howard made a strong run into the Clare goal area and hand-passed into the net. On the heavy pitch players were getting tired and play became scrappy but in a rare attack Clare got a 45 and Aoife Keane converted for their only score of the match. In the 43rd minute Tipperary’s Niamh Treacy received a great pass from midfield and drove a fierce shot into the back of the net . A minute later and Roisin Howard scored her third goal when winning a breaking ball she hand-passed into the net injuring herself in the process. As the match was drawing to a close Miriam Campion pointed a free for Tipperary and in added time Tipperary substitute Gillian McKenna goaled for Tipperary. From the puck out referee Cathal Egan (Cork) blew for full time. This was an impressive performance by the Tipperary minors with some exceptional teamwork. Manager Lennie Phillips along with selectors John Lillis and Mary Howard can be well please with their performance.
