Moycarkey Borris triumph and remain U16 Hurling champions

Boherlahan was the venue last Saturday October 8th as our championships came to conclusion. On a double header program we had both the U16 A & B Hurling finals. Under dry but rather nippy conditions referee Philip Bergin got the B action under way @ 12 noon. Two combinations contested this final Carrick Davins Skeheenarinka from the south were against west side Emly Sean Treacys.

The south team were first on the score record inside of thirty seconds as captain Tomas Vaughan pointed a free and added another one minute later. Aidan O’Heaney pointed for Emly Treacys to reduce the west deficit. Tomas Vaughan pointed two more frees quickly accompanied by one from play to put the south men in command on a score of 0-05 to 0-01 with thirteen minutes played. Also two yellows cards were issued one to players from both contestants. On the fifteen minute mark the west side captain Stephen Carr pointed a free but was unfortunate to see his next opportunity tailing off the target. A similar missed opportunity occurred for the south men. The Davins men were proving to be very forceful in many areas of the pitch and were very successful in thwarting any close encounters made by the Emly Treacys attack. West side captain Stephen Carr pointed his second free on the twenty second minute mark to put the score @ 0-05 to 0-03 in favour of the south men. Three minutes later Tomas Vaughan pointed his fourth free and had number five just prior to interval whistle for a score reading Carrick Davins Skeheenarinka 0-07 Emly Treacys 0-03.

Both teams had some good individual performance from the respective captains. Christopher English, Kevin O’Mahony, Conor Whelan, Darragh Brennan and Oisin Brennan were to the fore for the south men. Likewise the west sided were being ably assisted by the performances from Aidan O’Heaney Darragh McAuley, Conor Bourke, John O’Brien and Dean Heffernan. The last line of defence of both teams rallied to the cause as they were in busy mode.

Upon the resumption the opening opportunity fell to Emly Treacys by way of a free but failed to take any advantage. Tomas Vaughan made no mistake when the south opportunity came as he pointed a free after three minutes to follow up with one from play to put his side 0-9 to 0-3 ahead. On the ninth minute Stephen Carr pointed a west free. However from a neutral perspective the game was failing to produce any spectacle as some very niggley both on and off the ball incidents were occuring. The south side were always the more forceful and never appeared to be letting their grip on the game slip. Missed chances were adding up for both sides as was the free count. Tomas Vaughan pointed two more frees for a 0-11 to 0-4 score line in favour of the south. Oisin Brennan set up Riain Hennessy for another south point. Another pointed free by Tomas Vaughan on the twenty first minute to put the south men nine points ahead 0-13 to 0-4.

Then more misery for the west contenders as their net was rattled by the effort Darragh Brennan. They responded with an immediate attack on the south goal but the Carrick defence stood the test conceding a ’65 which Christy Egan pointed for the west men for a score reading 1-13 to 0-5. Kieran Macken pointed for the south and inside the next two minutes Christy Egan lobbed in a long distance free which took the south defence unaware and ended up in the net for a west goal – 1-15 to 1-5. Inside the closing five minutes two more goals came. Tomas Vaughan south free taker supreme had the west net shaking and the west response was a thirty meter free by Darragh McCauley ending up in the south net. As the contest entered its final moments Christopher English added the last addition to the score sheet with a closing point for the south for a concluding result of Carrick Skeheenarinka 2-16 Emly Treacys 2-5.

As previously mentioned it failed to produce a spectacle and with a free count of thirty one frees has its story to tell. The south team had the more strength in depth and with a marksman of the calibre of Tomas Vaughan in their attack paved the way in collecting the title. Full credit to both teams for the passion and commitment given.
County chairman Tom Dawson acknowledged the role put in by both teams, thanked host club Boherlahan Dualla for their pitch. He added that it was good to see referees turning up with a full complement of officials for our juvenile finals and thanked referee Philip Bergin in this regard. He thanked Tipperary Coop and their representative Kieran Maguire for their sponsorship. He then presented the cup to Carrick /Skeheenarinka victorious captain Tomas Vaughan.

The second contest on the program was eagerly awaited as both defending champions Moycarkey Borris from the mid and Toomevara from the north had impressive displays in their respective qualifiers. However the strong odds were weighted towards the defending champions. Referee Keith Delahunty got matters off @ 2pm.

Right from the throw in Moycarkey Borris had the opening salvo with a point by Max Haxkett. From the puck out he went on the attack and goaled for Moycarkey. On the third minute the mid boys were 1-2 up courtesy of a captain Jack Fallon point and within two minutes he registered his second point. Kevin Hayes from defence placed a ball onto to Max Hackett for his second point and total of 1-4 for the defending champions after seven minutes.

Toomevara were being well served by vice captain Kevin McCarthy at midfield while the defence work rate of Aidan White, Rory Brislane, Connor Farrell, Thomas Farrell, Darragh Spillane was very evident. Up front Eamon White Kenneth Ryan, Ciaran Grace and Kieran Boyle.

Their opening addition to the score record came on the twelfth minute with a pointed free by Kevin McCarthy. The Moycarkey response was swift with a point from Diarmuid Maher quickly followed by a second Moycarkey goal courtesy of Darren Flood for a score line Moycarkey 2-5 Toomevara 0-1 after fourteen minutes. Kyle Shelly and Darren Flood pointed from play and captain Jack Fallon from a free to extend the Moycarkey margin 2-8 to 0-1. Toome captain Jack Ryan pointed from the puck out but the Moycarkey men were resilient with points coming from Diarmuid Maher and Max Hackett.

The closing five minutes provided a revival by the north champions commencing with a pointed free by Kevin McCarthy. Then Kenneth Ryan dropped in a long range shot into the Moycarkey goal area and ended up in the net to put the score at 2-10 to 1-3 in favour of the mid men. Another pointed free by Toome vice captain Kevin McCarthy and as the interval was fast approaching Ciaran Grace crashed home a second Toome goal for an interval score reading Moycarkey 2-10 Toomevara 2-4.

Moycarkey strength was evident in every sector of the pitch with Tom Ryan, Peter Melbourne, Kevin Hayes and company so powerful in defence. The midfield pairing of Jack Fallon and Jack Morrissey were in full control as were their half and full forward colleagues. They had no weak links as everything went seeming less according to plan throughout the game.

After the restart the Toomevara defence was under the test as the defending champions continued their threatening mode. After three minutes Moycarkey had points by Kyle Shelly and Jack Fallon. On the fifth minute the Moycarkey defence was called into action but keeper Rhys Shelly was on full alert. Darren Flood pointed a free to extend the Moycarkey grip on the contest but the north men never gave up putting the opposition defence to the test as Zach Jackson cleared his line well when called upon. Jack Morrissey was ever vigilant thwarting all raids towards the Moycarkey line. On the eighth minute the Moycarkey spectators were jubilant as Diarmuid Maher had Moycarkey third goal on the score board for a 3-13 to 2-4 reading.

Kevin McCarthy pointed a free for Toomevara after an eleven minute barren spell to open their account for the second period. Moycarkey had another point by James Dillon. On the thirteenth minute another point for Toomevara by Kenneth Ryan. Keeper Rhys Shelly saved the day once for Moycarkey once again on the fourteenth minute. John Kirwan set up Darren Flood for another Moycarkey point to increase their total to 3-15 to 2-6.

For the remaining quarter of the contest some twelve points were added to the score sheet. Seven for Moycarkey, Jack Fallon 4, Darren Flood (free), Jack Morrisey, John Kirwan and James Dillon one each. The Toomevara additions came as follows Kevin McCarthy 3 (2 frees, ’65) and Eoin Healy, Brian Troy and Kenneth Ryan one each. It was an exhilarating contest between two great sides with the art of hurling shining out. Even though it was evident from the opening quarter that the defending champions were not going to relinquish their title full credit has to be afforded to the quality of hurling that Toomevara served. They were truly up against one of the most formidable teams of recent times. Congratulations to a very fine Moycarkey panel on recording back to back titles on this the top of our hurling calendar on a concluding score line Moycarkey Borris 3-22 Toomevara 2-11 The last occasion that feat was achieved was also by mid defending champions as Durlas Og done in 2010 & 2011.

County chairman Tom Dawson thanked host club Boherlahan and referee Keith Delahunty and his full team of officals. He had great praise for the Toomevara team who performed so well against a very formidable Moycarkey Borris. He added that the future was bright for hurling with the final we had just seen.
