MUNSTER SFC QUARTER-FINAL: LIMERICK 1-11 TIPPERARY 2-14

Report from the GAA.ie web site

Tipperary set up a Munster senior football semi-final with Cork after a storming victory against Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening.
Goals from Barry Grogan and Philip Austin in each half helped Tipp to their first provincial championship win since 2003 as Peter Creedon’s side impressed in their first championship outing following their successful Division IV campaign.

After a bright opening saw the sides level at 0-2 each, referee Anthony Nolan showed Ciarán McDonald a black card for a foul on Ian Ryan. But instead of Limerick kicking on, Tipperary hit the game’s significant score two minutes later when Barry Grogan finished easily to the net after a booming punt into the large rectangle. Tipperary dominated until the break and led 1-7 to 0-6 at half-time, but once Austin hit Tipperary’s second goal three minutes after the break the win was almost secure.

Had Grogan converted his 41st minute penalty there would have been no doubt after Donal O’Sullivan fouled Ian Fahey, but the Limerick stopper pulled off a fine save to deny the impressive attacker. Limerick were well beaten, but they still mustered a strong finish when Eoin Hanrahan converted a penalty nine minutes from time to put six points between the sides, but Tipp held on to take the win.
