Tipperary GAA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest-ever hurlers, John “Mackey” McKenna, of Borrisokane.
A proud Tipperary man through and through, Mackey’s name is forever etched in the rich history of our county and our games. From the moment he first wore the blue and gold, he played with a passion, courage, and skill that made him one of the defining figures of Tipperary hurling’s golden era.
Representing Tipperary at senior level from 1961 to 1968, Mackey’s career was laden with success and glory. During that time, he captured:
4 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships (1961, 1962, 1964, 1965)
6 Munster Senior Hurling Championships (1961, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968)
4 National Hurling League titles (1960-61, 1963-64, 1964-65, 1967-68)
At club level, Mackey was the beating heart of Borrisokane GAA, also lining out for Burgess GAA during his playing days. His leadership, sportsmanship, and devotion to his club and county inspired generations of young players who followed in his footsteps.
On the field, Mackey was renowned for his fearless style of play, sharp scoring touch, and unrelenting work rate. Off it, he was a gentleman in every sense of the word, humble, kind, and generous with his time. His life was built around the GAA and his local community, both of which he served with pride and distinction.
Earlier this year, the people of Borrisokane fittingly honoured their hero with the unveiling of a monument in his memory — a lasting symbol of the esteem in which he was held by all who knew him.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life that brought immense joy and pride to Tipperary. His achievements, his spirit, and his example will live on in the hearts of all who cherish the blue and gold.
