Dr. Fogarty Cup Semi Final

Injury Time Point Puts Clonoulty in Final

Clonoulty Rossmore 0-17 Templederry Kenyons 0-16

Clonoulty Rossmore, who enjoyed home advantage, advanced to the final of the Dr. Fogarty Challenge Cup, by virtue of an injury time point victory, from former county panelist Timmy Hammersley, over Templederry Kenyons, on Sunday last.

Templederry got off to a good start and had two points on the score board from midfielders Johnny Harkins and Eanna Murray before man of the match Sean Maher opened Clonoulty’s account in the eleventh minute. The Templederry midfield were well on top during this opening period and this was reflected by the supply of ball to their forwards, who were always looking dangerous, especially wing forward Liam McCutchen who would finish the game as their top scorer with four outstanding points, all from play, two in each half. Gearoid Ryan, Dillon Carey and Padraig O’Leary also had points for the North team, while Sean Maher had two more for the men from the West. Timmy Hammersley hit two from frees also. Immediately before the break Templederry should have had the game’s first goal, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Declan O’Dwyer in the home goal. Adrian Ryan pointed the resulting 65 to leave them in front at the break by three points on the score Templederry 0-8 Clonoulty 0-5.

Clonoulty were quickly into the game after the restart and had points from Aidan White and Fiachra O’Keeffe. Liam McCutchen put Templederry further in front with a good point. Sean Maher with one and Timmy Hammersley with two from frees eased the West men in front by the eight minute. Templederry then hit a purple patch and scored seven unanswered points from Liam McCutchen (2), Padraig O’Leary (2) one each from Donal McGrath and Matthew Hogan, and one from a placed ball from the stick of Gearoid Ryan, to put them six points up with ten minutes remaining, and firmly in the driving seat. Clonoulty then came storming back into the game, being driven on by their half back line, and had points from John O’Neill (2), Timmy Hammersley (2F) and one from Fiachra O’Keeffe to cut the deficit to the minimum with one minute remaining. Timmy Hammersley equalized from a free with time running out and it looked to the small attendance that the game was heading for extra time. However Timmy Hammersley had other ideas and two minutes into injury time got the winner from out near the touch line to put Clonoulty into the final on the score Clonoulty Rossmore 0-17 Templederry Kenyons 0-16.
