Tipperary Senior Hurlers

The Tipperary Senior Hurlers will be out again on Saturday 16th May at home to Clare in FBD Semple Stadium with a 7.00 pm throw in. Their final group game takes place the week after on Sunday 24th May where they will take on Limerick in TUS Gaelic Grounds at 4.00 pm.

Tipperary Under 20 Hurlers

Well done to the Tipperary Under 20 Hurlers who delivered an impressive performance last Wednesday evening at TUS Gaelic Grounds defeating Limerick on a 4-20 to 2-8 scoreline.

Tipperary were on top throughout, with a well taken goal from David Costigan in the second minute giving them the ideal start. Jamie Ormonde added a second goal on 14 minutes finishing off excellent build up play involving Charlie and Robbie Ryan to extend the lead to six points. Tipperary led comfortably at half time 2-11 to 0-4.

Costigan struck for his second goal six minutes into the second half reacting quickest to a rebound after Charlie Ryan’s effort came back off the crossbar. Limerick responded with two quick goals of their own but Tipperary remained in control. Cormac Fitzpatrick added a well deserved goal on 44 minutes as Tipp powered on to an emphatic 18 point victory.

This comprehensive win proved crucial – securing Tipperary’s place in the Munster Final. All three sides – Tipperary, Cork and Clare – finished level on six points but Tipperary topped the group on score difference (+20) ahead of Cork (+14) and Clare (+1).

Cork now host Clare this Wednesday 6th May, with Tipperary awaiting the winners in the Munster Final the following week on Wednesday, 13th May.

Tipperary Minor Hurlers

Well done to the Minor Hurlers who secured their place in the Munster Final after a hard fought 2-13 to 0-16 victory over Limerick last Thursday in the TUS Gaelic Grounds. Tipperary made a brilliant start hitting four points in the opening four minutes and leading 0-8 to 0-3 after 17 minutes with Connall Morrison prominent for the Premier. Limerick responded well and finished the half strongly with accurate free taking reducing the gap to two points at the break (0-9 to 0-7). Tipp made the ideal start to the second half with Rian McGrath finding the net with a superb one handed finish to stretch the lead to five. Ollie Roche then added a second goal midway through the half to push Tipperary eight points clear. Limerick battled back scoring the next five points to cut the deficit to three. However, a crucial save from Tipperary goalkeeper Eoin Connolly along with a resilient defensive effort ensured Tipp held on for a deserved win.

Tipperary’s last group game will take place on Friday 8th May at 7.00 pm against Waterford in Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field. Tipperary have generally had the upper hand in their recent Minor Hurling clashes with Waterford despite Waterford edging last year’s encounter by 1-16 to 0-17. Prior to that, Tipperary had won four consecutive meetings between the sides from looking back at the last five clashes. In 2024, Tipperary claimed a 3-16 to 2-14 victory in the group stage with goals from Adam Ryan, Billy O’Brien and Cillian Minogue. They also came out on top in the 2023 group game winning 1-20 to 1-12 with Stefan Tobin finding the net. The 2022 season saw the counties meet twice –  both games going Tipperary’s way. In the group stage, Tipp secured a narrow 1-22 to 0-23 win with Damien Corbett scoring the crucial goal. They met again in the Semi Final where Tipperary delivered a dominant performance winning 3-27 to 0-15. Goals on that occasion came from Tom Delaney, Darragh McCarthy and Jack Hayes.

The Munster Final will then take place on Friday 18th May at 7.00 pm with opponents and venue yet to be determined.

Tipperary Minor Footballers

Best of luck to the Tipperary Minor Footballers who face Longford this coming Saturday 9th May at 1.30 pm (note updated throw in time) in Templemore in the Preliminary Quarter Final of the Tier 3 All Ireland Minor Football Championship.

Handball

The weekend of the 25th/26th April was a busy one for Tipperary handball.

On Saturday, Billy and Pakie Mullins (Clonmel) lined out in the Men’s Over 70 Final against Dublin’s Eugene Kennedy and Ned Flynn. It proved to be a cracking contest, with the Tipp pair edging a tight battle, winning 21-17, 21-19.

On Sunday, Anne Marie Ryan and Karen Monaghan (Ballina) competed in the Ladies Over 35 Doubles Final against Kilkenny’s Elaine Deniffe and Chloe Farrell. The Tipp duo dominated from the outset using powerful serving and excellent teamwork to take control and secure a comprehensive victory.

Tipperary also featured in two Semi Finals. In the Intermediate Doubles, Rory Grace and Jerome Cahill (Loch Éorna) were unlucky to lose out to Monaghan’s Oran Kiernan and Conor O’Gorman in a tiebreak. In the Men’s Over 35 Doubles, Johnny and Dan Delaney were beaten by Tyrone’s Conor Grogan and Conor Duff.

One Wall

At the Antrim Slam, two Tipperary players made the journey north to compete. Erin Neville (Ballina) took part in the Girls Under 15 competition while Christy McGrath (Carrick-on-Suir) competed in the Men’s C and Masters grades.

Erin delivered an outstanding performance, going undefeated throughout and winning a tremendous Final 21-18. Christy also impressed, winning the Men’s C title and finishing runner-up in the Masters. He was also honoured by Ulster Handball with a presentation recognising his significant contribution to the promotion of Wallball. Overall it was a highly successful weekend for Tipperary Handball.

FBD Insurance County Leagues

The majority of the games in Round 5 of the County Football League took place over the last week.

The only game to take place in Division 1 saw Clonmel Commercials prove too strong for Cahir running out convincing 3-14 (23) to 3-9 (18) winners at Clonmel Sportsfield. Moyle Rovers have already secured top spot in Division 1 and booked their place in the Final. The final game in the group sees Golden Kilfeacle host Ardfinnan on Sunday May 17th. A win for Golden Kilfeacle will secure them second place and a spot in the Final while a win or draw will be enough for Ardfinnan to claim the runners up position and a place in the Final. The Division 1 Final is scheduled for Sunday, May 31st.

In Division 2, Aherlow delivered an impressive performance against Grangemockler Ballyneale, winning 3-13 to 0-14. The remaining two games both ended in draws with Kilsheelan Kilcash and Galtee Rovers St Pecauns finishing level on 1-14 apiece while Moyne Templetuohy and Fethard also shared the spoils on 1-11 each. Division 2 has concluded with the Final fixed for Sunday 31st May and see Grangemockler Ballyneale facing Moyne Templetuohy who finished first and second.

In Division 3, St. Patrick’s recorded a strong 4-16 to 4-7 victory over Clonmel Óg. Ballingarry also enjoyed a comfortable win over Borrisokane finishing 2-13 to 0-6. There are still games left to be played in the group so the finalists have yet to be decided.

It’s a similar situation in Division 4 where the finalists have yet to be determined with a number of games still to be played. In the past week’s results, Cahir (2) edged a tight contest with Ardfinnan (2) winning 3-4 to 2-6. Rosegreen recorded a solid 3-11 to 2-9 victory over Ballyporeen (2) while Rockwell Rovers (2) were dominant in their clash with Solohead securing a 6-16 to 1-11 win.

There was also hurling action across the divisions. In Division 5 Group 3, Boherlahan Dualla proved far too strong for Ballylooby Castlegrace winning comfortably on a 1-23 to 0-15 scoreline. In Division 6 Group 3, Killenaule (2) had the better of Gortnahoe Glengoole (3) winning 2-24 to 1-15. In the second fixture, Gortnahoe Glengoole (3) responded with a strong 4-14 to 2-15 win over Kilruane MacDonaghs (3).
