West Tipperary GAA Scene – August 23rd 2016

By Jonathan Cullen Tue 23rd Aug

West Intermediate Hurling Championship:
Two of the quarter finals of this year’s Tipperary Credit Union West Intermediate Hurling Championship are fixed for this weekend.

There is a double header in Dundrum on Sunday. First up at 12 noon is the meeting of Arravale Rovers and Sean Treacys. It will be the second meeting of the sides this year. Sean Treacys came out on top when the sides met in the group stages of the County championship a few months back. Sean Treacys have advanced to the knockout stages of the County championship while Arravale Rovers finished bottom of their group and must win the West division to advance further as well as avoiding a relegation battle. It will be a first meeting of the sides in the West Championship since the sides clashed in the 2013 final – Arravale Rovers bridging a 16 year gap on the day to win the title.

Second up, 2015 champions Cashel King Cormacs put their crown on the line when they take on Rockwell Rovers at 1.30pm. Both teams finished bottom of their respective groups in the County championship and must win the West championship to return to the County championship and to avoid being involved in relegation. So this has all the makings of a great game. There is a provision for extra-time in all games should they finish level after sixty minutes.

West Intermediate Football Championship:
The first game in this year’s Rea Clarke Hennessy West Intermediate Football championship is fixed for Wednesday night August 24th as neighbours Cashel King Cormacs and Rockwell Rovers meet in New Inn at 7.30pm. It is a repeat of last year’s final where Rockwell Rovers took the honours. This year’s competition will be run on a round-robin basis with the top two teams contesting the decider. Golden/Kilfeacle make up the three teams.

West Junior A Football Championship:
The second semi-final in this year’s AIB Tipperary West Junior A Football championship will take place this Tuesday evening at 6.30pm in Sean Treacy Park where Emly take on Sean Treacys. Emly are unbeaten following victories over Clonoulty/Rossmore and Rosegreen while Sean Treacys defeated Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams following an open round defeat to Cappawhite. Emly were beaten West and County finalists in 2015 while Sean Treacys will be looking to make their second final in three years. The winners will play Clonoulty/Rossmore in this year’s final on Friday September 2nd in Cappawhite at 8pm.

West Junior A Hurling Championship:
The semi-final of this year’s Gleeson Concrete West Junior A Hurling Championship took place last Saturday evening in Golden. In what was a repeat of the 2014 and 2015 finals it was Clonoulty/Rossmore who emerged victorious over Kickhams. Match Report

This year’s final will take place on Saturday evening in Sean Treacy Park at 6pm as Emly and Clonoulty/Rossmore go head to head in the 87th running of the final. It will be a first final meeting between the sides since 2010 where Emly came out on top by three points and a fourth final meeting between the sides.

Emly go into the final unbeaten with a clean sweep of victories in the group stage of the competition including a seven point victory over their final opponents last May. Emly will be appearing in their 10th final and a first final since 2013 where they were defeated by Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams. They also suffered defeat two years previous when going down to Rockwell Rovers. They have won the competition on five previous occasions, 2002, 03, 04, 08 & 10.

Clonoulty/Rossmore defeated Eire Og Annacarty Donohill in the group stages of the competition and overcame Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams in the semi-final last weekend. Clonoulty/Rossmore will be contesting their 18th final and were victorious in 1936, 1944, 1956, 1958, 1983, 2012 and 2014. In last year’s decider they were defeated by Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams but put a run together to reach the County final where they were narrowly defeated by Roscrea.

Previous Final Meetings:
Emly 2-13 1-13 Clonoulty/R 10/10/10 Golden
Emly 1-16 2-7 Clonoulty/R 11/10/03 Golden
Rossmore 2-0 0-5 Emly 1956 Golden

West Junior B Hurling Championship:
Arravale Rovers will meet Cashel King Cormacs in the final of the Tipperary Co-Op West Junior B Hurling Championship for the first time since the competitions inaugural final in 1993. On Friday evening Galtee Rovers conceded to Cashel King Cormacs. While on Saturday evening in Cappawhite Arravale Rovers made it four wins on the trot when they accounted for Group 1 winners Solohead. Match Report

West Minor A Hurling Championship:
Clonoulty/Rossmore will play Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams in the final of the Joe Hayes Cleanline West Minor A Hurling championship following semi-final victories on Wednesday night last.

In Annacarty Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams defeated Cappawhite Gaels. Match Report

In Sean Treacy Park Clonoulty/Rossmore got the better of Emly/Treacys, in the repeat of last year’s final. Match Report

West Senior Hurling Championship:
The Tipperary Co-Op West Senior Hurling Championship will resume on Saturday September 10th as defending champions Eire Og Annacarty Donohill and Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams meet in Clonoulty.

County Senior Football Championship:
The County Senior Football championship resumes this Wednesday night.

In Group 1 in Cashel at 7pm Arravale Rovers take on Cahir. It is the second meeting of the sides in recent times. In 2013 Arravale Rovers needed extra time to see off their opponents in the County preliminary quarter final. While in 2014 Cahir made amends when they defeated Arravale in the group stages of the competition.

Arravale and Kilsheelan/Kilcash are currently joint top of the group on three points each with Cahir in third on two points and Upperchurch/Drombane prop up the table without a point.

A win or a draw will guarantee Arravale a place in the knockout stages but their final position in the group will depend on the result of the Kilsheelan/Kilcash v Upperchurch/Drombane game. Should they finish level on points with Kilsheelan/Kilcash then score difference will decide the final placings.

Defeat for Arravale will see Cahir leapfrog them and their progression from the group will depend on the result in the other group game between Kilsheelan/Kilcash and Upperchurch/Drombane.

In Group 4 Aherlow Gaels take on Ardfinnan in Golden at 7pm. The sides met in the group stage of the competition 12 months ago where Aherlow Gaels came out on op by three points.

Aherlow Gaels are currently second in the group level on two points with Moyle Rovers and two points behind Drom/Inch on four points. Ardfinnan prop up the group yet to register a point. A win for Aherlow Gaels and Moyle Rovers who play Drom/Inch will see three teams tied on four points each and score difference will determine the final group positions. Should both games finish level then Aherlow and Moyle Rovers will be level on points but Aherlow will go through based on the head to head between the sides. Defeat for both Aherlow Gaels and Moyle Rovers will see three teams level on two points and score difference will apply again. Victory for Moyle Rovers and a defeat or a draw for Aherlow Gaels will see Aherlow Gaels eliminated from the group phase.

County Intermediate Hurling Championship:
In Group 6 Golden/Kilfeacle take on Newport in Annacarty at 7pm this Wednesday night. Kilsheelan/Kilcash have topped the group on four points. Golden/Kilfeacle are currently third in the group on two points, a point behind Drom/Inch in second and a point clear of Newport who are currently bottom. A win or a draw will guarantee Golden/Kilfeacle second spot in the group. A draw would mean they would be level on points with Drom/Inch but would go ahead of them on the head to head between the sides. A win will see them level on points with Kilsheelan/Kilcash but the latter will top the group based on the head to head between the sides. Should Newport win then Golden/Kilfeacle will finish bottom of the group and will have to win the West championship to gain entry to the County knockout stages and avoid relegation.

Tipperary Senior Footballers:
Commiserations to the Tipperary Senior Footballers last Sunday who were defeated by Mayo in Croke Park in their All Ireland semi-final. A very good performance which just fell short but bodes well for the future which hopefully we will build on in 2017.
