TG4 MUNSTER INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Tipperary travelled to Claughaun GAA Club, Limerick to take on the hosts in Round 2 of the TG4 Munster Ladies Football Championship on Saturday last. Limerick gave a great performance against Waterford in Round 1 played at Adare, keeping Waterford under pressure for most of the game until the final minutes. For Tipperary this was their first game in the Munster Championship with a new young team.
Limerick settled from the throw in and started the scoring at a fast pace putting Tipperary on the back foot straight away. A chance to put Tipperary on the score board came when Aisling McCarthy received a penalty in the third minute but the Limerick goalie Kristina Hennessy made a good save. Tipperary suffered another blow when their full back, Jessica Newman was injured and had to be substituted in the sixth minute. Limerick had two goals and a point on the score board before Tipperary secured their first point of the game by Lorraine O’Shea in the seventh minute. Limerick’s purple patch continued for another ten minutes scoring another four goals and three points to Tipperary’s two points. In the final quarter of the first half Tipperary settled and added five points and a Laura Dillon goal to Limerick’s three points. Limerick 6-7 Tipperary 1-8.
Tipperary regrouped at half-time, making a number of positional changes and competed much better as a result. Limerick started the scoring in the thirty fifth minute with a Claire O’Riordan point but Tipperary’s Gillian O’Brien counteracted that score with a point of her own. The flow of the game had changed with both sides battling hard to maintain possession of the ball. Tipperary’s Lauren Fitzpatrick guarded her goals brilliantly with some excellent saves in the second half while Limerick’s goalie made it very difficult for the Tipperary forwards to raise the green flag. With both goalkeepers doing well, the second half scoring was limited to point scoring with Limerick adding six points to Tipperary’s five. As the final whistle blew Limerick emerged winners by 6-13 to 1-13.
