TIPPERARY INTERMEDIATE TEAM
Tipperary Ladies Football Intermediate team commenced their Tesco Homegrown National Football League Competition in JK Bracken’s GAA Club, Templemore on Sunday last against Leitrim. Both teams entered the field of play amid cheers and applause as Templemore Ladies Football Club had a guard of honour for the players and mentors. A persistent lingering fog encased the field throughout the game sometimes making visibility poor however not dampening the spirits of the players.
Leitrim were first to take possession of the ball from the throw in and a well taken free by Leitrim’s Aine Tighe in the second minute meant that they registered the first score as well. Tighe added another point in the fourth minute before Aisling McCarthy scored Tipperary’s first point in the ninth minute. Aine and Aisling traded points again in the eleventh and fifteenth minute, respectively. For the next ten minutes Leitrim having the majority of the possession of the ball tried to penetrate the Tipperary back line but to no avail due to some excellent defending. In the twenty third minute a low ball from Leitrim’s Ailbhe Clancy was hand punched by Carla LeGuen towards the net but Tipperary’s, Lauren Fitzpatrick caught the ball and safely kicked it back into play. In the twenty fifth minute Aine Tighe resumed her point scoring with five unanswered points to go in at half time Leitrim 0-8 Tipperary 0-2
In the opening minute of the second half Tipperary’s Lorraine O’Shea raised the green flag while Leitrim added another point to their score line. Aimee Pollard in the sixth minute reduced the deficit to a point when she netted the ball. Points were traded in the seventh and ninth minute before Aine Tighe hit the back of the net for Leitrim’s first goal. As the game entered the final quarter the momentum that Tipperary had built up deteriorated and Leitrim scored an unanswered goal and point. In the twenty second minute, a goal by Tipperary sub Sarah Ryan did little more than reduce the margin to five points which would be extend back further again when in the final five minutes of the game Leitrim would score another goal and two points as Leitrim ran out 10 point winners – Leitrim 3-13 Tipperary 3-3
