In this week’s Tipperary GAA Scene we take a look back at a jam packed weekend of football action last weekend , we also have Scór and Bord Na nóg news, fixtures and referee news.
FBD Insurance County Championships
Senior Football Quarter Finals
All four of this year’s senior football quarter finals took place last weekend and commenced in Golden on Saturday afternoon with the meeting of Moyle Rovers and Loughmore Castleiney. This was another typical game that we have come to expect between these sides over the years, with never more than a score or two separating them at any point during the game. Loughmore Castleiney would have been many peoples favourites to come out on top in this game, but Moyle Rovers obviously did not buy in to that train of thought as they proved to be the more clinical side in the end, winning by the narrowest of margins 1-10 to 0-12.
The second of the quarter finals to take place on Saturday was between Ballina and Clonmel Commercials and was played in Templemore. While Ballina had impressed throughout the group stages, they were always going to be up against it in this game as they took on the aristocrats of Tipperary club football. The North Tipperary men battled hard during the opening stages but eventually they were just overpowered by the side who are odds on favourites to claim this year’s Tipperary championship and are being widely tipped as one of the main contenders in the All Ireland club championship this year.
The second pair of quarter finals were played in less than ideal weather conditions on Sunday afternoon. First into action were the footballers of JK Brackens and Killenaule who faced off in Cashel and while Killenaule did get off to an ideal start, having the ball in the back of their opponents net in under a minute, JK Brackens eventually found their rhythm as they took some lovely scores to take control of the game. One of the performances of the weekend was seen in this game in the form of JK Brackens marksman Jack Kennedy who contributed handsomely to his sides score sheet as well as in open play. In the end JK Brackens won by 2-10 to 3-03.
The fourth and indeed probably the most entertaining of the quarter finals was played in what can only be described as monsoon like conditions on Sunday evening in Boherlahan between Upperchurch Drombane and Kilsheelan Kilcash. With never more than just a kick of the ball between the sides, one could never be certain of the outcome of the game and indeed both sides were level on a number of occasions during the game, but more importantly the teams were tied at full time and again at the end of extra time, which meant that penalties were going to be required to separate the sides and decide who would go forward in to the semi finals. It is never easy to face into penalties after playing almost 90 minutes of football, but it had to be done and in the end it was Upperchurch Drombane who prevailed by 7 goals to 6.
Intermediate Football Quarter Finals
The final four spots in the 2023 FBD Insurance county intermediate football championship were also up for grabs last weekend with the staging of the quarter finals of the competition. On Saturday afternoon in Littleton it was the clash of “The Blues” as Thurles Sarsfields took on Fethard. Both sides had impressed during the group stages so a good competitive game of football was expected. However this did not materialise as it was Thurles Sarsfields who totally dominated from start to finish and lead by the likes of Paddy Creedon, Henry Fogarty, Michael Cahill and David Burke they ran out very comfortable 2-13 to 1-04 winners. The meeting of CJ Kickhams Mullinahone and Galtee Rovers in New Inn on Saturday afternoon was again expected to be a very highly competitive and close game, but this did not materialise as Galtee Rovers set out their stall from an early stage as they took control of the game and eventually won with 7 points to spare. The full time score being 1-10 to 0-06.
The remaining two quarter finals were played on Sunday afternoon, in Ballingarry extra time was required to separate the footballers of Grangemockler Ballyneale and Moyne Templetuohy who served up a relatively entertaining game in less than ideal conditions. In the end it was the South Tipp men who progressed by virtue of a 1-10 to 0-11 win. Extra time was also required in Cahir where Clonmel Commercials and Aherlow met to decide the outcome of their quarter final. Level on more occasions than not during both normal and extra time, it was Aherlow who just about did enough to claim victory on a full time score of 0-09 to 0-08.
In the county Junior “A” football quarter finals there were wins for Sean Treacys over Kiladangan, St Patricks defeated Holycross Ballycahill and Carrick Swan proved too strong for Boherlahan. The fourth quarter final between Arravale Rovers and Roscrea did not take place and is scheduled to be played this Friday evening in Drombane.
Both semi finals in the senior football relegation took place last weekend and resulted in wins for Rockwell Rovers over Moycarkey Borris and Arravale Rovers over Eire Óg Annacarty Donohill. This now means that both semi final losers have been relegated and will be joined at intermediate level in 2024 by the losers of the relegation final which will be between Rockwell Rovers and Arravale Rovers.
Last weekend also saw two very important hurling games taking place. In the county Junior “A” hurling Clonoulty Rossmore had a good 2-20 to 1-11 win over Roscrea, while in the Premier Intermediate hurling championship, Lorrha Dorrha defeated Clonakenny by 1-20 to 2-15 to reach the semi finals.

Congratulations to Alan Tierney
5 Munster Referees recently completed the Munster Referee Academy and subsequently officiated in this year’s Munster Minor Championships.
The referees are Eoghan O’Muircheartaigh (Dingle, Kerry), Sean Walsh (De La Salle, Waterford), David Deady (Bruree, Limerick), Alan Tierney (Shannon Rovers, Tipperary) and Shane Scanlon (Newcestown, Cork).
The Munster Academy steered a determined pathway which involved guiding the selected candidates through an intensive six week program of carefully designed workshop topics which were tailored to help each candidate make the transition from club refereeing to intercounty refereeing.
The referees were presented with their certificates at a function in Killarney on Friday September 22nd by Munster GAA Chairman Ger Ryan and Munster Referees Committee Chairman Michael Wadding.

U17 minor finals A and B take place next weekend Saturday 30th and Sunday 1st On Saturday at 5pm in Clonoulty Moycarkey Borris take on Newport in the B final, this promises to be a great game of hurling as both teams showed great skill and determination to reach the county final and both teams will fight tooth and nail to get their hands on the County B Cup.
On Sunday at 2pm in Cashel Holycross Ballycahill will take on CJ Kickhams Mullinahone in the A Final again this promises to be a mighty battle with the county holders Holycross Ballycahill determined to defend their title. CJ Kickhams Mullinahone who are County U17 cross divisional champions will be determined to add the county championship to their trophy cabinet. We look forward to two great hurling finals and wish the four teams the best of luck.
GAA clubs urged to upload crests for inclusion on GAA Museum Club Wall
GAA clubs are being urged to upload their crests to the club page on the Foireann database so they can be included on the recreated Club Wall in front of the GAA Museum at Croke Park.
The crest image and the name of your club in both English and Irish must be uploaded to the Foireann database by Friday, September 29 if it is to be included on the Club Wall.
Full details and instructions on how you can edit these details, including updating Club crests, can be found in the Organisation Details section of the Foireann Help Centre. Upload the file you think is sufficient quality, according to the guidance on the Help Centre.
The File type must be a JPEG or PNG file and the format required is 800px by 800px.
If your crest is not uploaded by the extended closing date, your club’s name will be featured however there will be a generic crest used on the display wall.
The new Club Wall at the GAA Museum in Croke Park will be unveiled later in the year.
