FBD Insurance County Championships

Last weekend was a relatively quiet weekend on the playing fields with only two games in the adult grades taking place. On Sunday afternoon in Dundrum it was the clash of neighbours Cashel King Cormacs and Boherlahan Dualla in the Premier Intermediate Hurling Preliminary Quarter Final. Played in front of a bumper crowd, this was a really entertaining game of hurling with both sides giving everything in an effort to progress to the next round of the competition. The early stages saw Boherlahan Dualla dominate, before Cashel King Cormacs found their rhythm. Cashel took a hold of the game in the second half and once they took the lead they made sure that they were not going to be denied the victory as they held out to win by 1-22 to 1-18.

In Moneygall it was the clash of Drom & Inch and Borrisokane in the Intermediate Hurling Preliminary Quarter Final. This was a fairly one sided game that saw the North Tipperary side dominate from start to finish as they secured a comfortable 3-20 to 0-14 win which secured their place in the Quarter Finals.

Last weekend also saw two games taking place in the under 19 Hurling championship. In the “A” grade, Templemore was the destination for the players and supporters of Toomevara and Holycross Ballycahill, who were both hoping to secure victory in the semi final. Both sides were coming in to the game off the back of memorable divisional final wins and so it was anticipated that the game would be a well contested and close encounter, and so it turned out to be. In the end the difference came down to the ability of Holycross Ballycahill to take their goal scoring opportunities as they progressed to this year’s under 19A final on a full time score of 3-18 to 0-19.

The first of the under 19B semi finals between Kilruane MacDonaghs and Upperchurch Drombane took place in Templederry on Sunday afternoon and in another highly entertaining game it was the men in black and white who prevailed in the end on a full time score of 2-14 to 0-16.

This weekend will see a feast of hurling action across five grades from under 19 to Senior, with a total of 24 games down for decision.

FBD Semple Stadium will play host to all four Senior Hurling Quarter Finals and is sure to attract large numbers of supporters to the venue. The action gets underway on Saturday afternoon at 3.15pm with the clash of defending County champions Kiladangan and Moycarkey Borris, followed at 5pm by the meeting of Toomevara and JK Brackens. On Sunday Loughmore Castleiney and Kilruane MacDonaghs meet at 2.15pm, followed by the clash of Nenagh Eire Óg and Thurles Sarsfields at 4pm.

In the Premier Intermediate Quarter Finals, Thurles Sarsfields and Cashel King Cormacs meet in Holycross on Saturday at 2.15pm, while in Kilcommon at 4pm, Eire Óg Annacarty and Upperchurch Drombane will meet for their Quarter Final. On Sunday at 2.15pm in Clonoulty, St Marys take on Gortnahoe Glengoole and this game will be followed by the final tie of the round between Carrick Swan and Burgess at 4pm.

In the Intermediate Quarter Finals, Moneygall face Portroe in Cloughjordan on Saturday at 5pm, while at the same time in Cashel, Ballingarry will face Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams. On Sunday at 12pm, Newport will be the venue for the clash of Shannon Rovers and Cappawhite, while at 5pm in Borrisoleigh, Borrisokane and Golden Kilfeacle will both be hoping to secure their place in this year’s semi finals.

In the Junior “A” Hurling Quarter Finals, all four games are scheduled to take place on Sunday. At 12pm Kiladangan will play Holycross Ballycahill in Templederry, while at the same time in The Ragg, Holycross Ballycahill take on Toomevara. At 3pm, Moyle Rovers face Lattin Cullen in Bansha, while at 5.15pm in New Inn, Galtee Rovers face St Patricks.

There are also 6 relegation semi final games down for decision this weekend that are sure to attract a lot of attention. In the Senior Hurling relegation, Nenagh will play host to a double header of action on Saturday. At 2.30pm, Borris-Ileigh play Lorrha Dorrha, while at 4.15pm it’s the clash of Templederry Kenyons and Roscrea. Both relegation semi finals in the Premier Intermediate are down for decision on Sunday in Dundrum. At 2pm Sean Treacys play Silvermines, while at 3.45pm it’s the clash of Newport and Moyne Templetuohy. In the Intermediate grade, Skeheenarinky play Upperchurch Drombane on Sunday at 1pm in Bansha, while at the same time in Cahir, Arravale Rovers take on Ballybacon Grange.

This Wednesday evening September 11th saw the second of the under 19B hurling semi finals taking place, as Arravale Rovers defeated Kilsheelan Kilcash by the narrowest of margins 1-22 to 3-15 in Clonoulty.

Croke Park to host ‘GameChangers’ event

On Saturday, September 14, Croke Park will host ‘Game Changers – Youth & Coaches in Action’, an event organised by Léargas which aims to bring together those involved in grassroots sports in order to identify issues and challenges in sport in Ireland and from there introduce them to a new Erasmus+ sport action.

Léargas manage international and national exchange programmes in education, youth and community work, and vocational education and training, and the Erasmus+ sport action is a funding opportunity for staff or volunteers involved mainly in grassroots sporting organisations to gain new skills.

The ‘Game Changers’ event is an introduction to Erasmus+ and will facilitate attendees to work together in groups to identify issues and challenges and from that develop project ideas that would be eligible then for Erasmus+ funding.

Because the focus is grassroots sport, Léargas Support and Development Officer, Katie O’Regan, believes ‘Game Changers’ is a good fit for coaches and young people involved in Gaelic games.

“Last year was our first year but we’ve already had a lot of interaction from the GAA because of how the relevant the GAA is to grassroots sport and that volunteer aspect,” O’Regan told GAA.ie

“We’ve had three projects that have been successful in the last year and a half through Erasmus+.

“Throughout the whole of Erasmus+ there’s so many different avenues to go down but the four horizontal priorities are inclusion and diversity, digital, sustainability, and active participation. Most of the sports projects we’ve have had a particular focus on the inclusion and diversity aspect which is nice to see.

“It’s for everyone involved in sport be that coaches, volunteers, club officers, and young people, so it’s really, really broad which is nice.

“We’ve found that having coaches and young people involved in sport mixing at past events has been really good. It shares different perspectives and promotes discussion on different topics. We’ve found that the theme of inclusion really comes up throughout those conversations.

“At the ‘Game Changers’ event we would be hoping to work together in groups to identify issues and challenges and from that develop project ideas that would be eligible then for Erasmus+.”
