SENIOR HURLING

Tipperary made it three wins out of three in the Allianz Hurling League following their 0-28 to 0-21 defeat of Clare in Semple Stadium on Sunday last. Congratulations to the team on a solid performance though one which didn’t come without further injury concerns with Brendan Maher, Niall O’Meara and Donagh Maher all having to leave the field and are wished well for full and speedy recoveries.

Congratulations to Tomás Hamill (Moyne-Templetuohy) on receiving the Allianz Man of the Match award following his display.

Next Saturday evening, March 11th, as part of a re-arranged double bill in Semple Stadium, the Tipperary hurlers welcome arch rivals Kilkenny to Thurles for round 4 of the Allianz League Division 1A with throw in at 7pm. This will certainly be a game to set the pulses racing and should ensure a bumper crowd on Saturday night.

Sixty eight games have been played between the sides in the league with Tipperary in front on thirty two wins to Kilkenny’s thirty with six games drawn. Some people have it thirty one wins each after an error arose in a specific match programme, which gave the wrong score for the October 7th, 1973 meeting at Nowlan Park on the day John Flanagan (Moycarkey-Borris) scored 3-4. However, observant eyes by those with attention to detail spotted the anomaly and therefore the balance rests with Tipp.

The last ten meetings however aren’t as kind to Tipp with the county on three wins to Kilkenny’s seven, the results of which are as follows; 21/2/2016 at Nowlan Park – Kilkenny 2-17 Tipperary 0-18 (Group); 15/3/2015 at Semple Stadium – Tipperary 2-22 Kilkenny 1-13  (Group); 4/5/2014 at Semple Stadium – Kilkenny 2-25 Tipperary 1-27 (Final, aet); 23/2/2014 at Nowlan Park – Kilkenny 5-20 Tipperary 5-14 (Group); 5/5/2013 at Nowlan Park – Kilkenny 2-17 Tipperary 0-20  (Final); 10/3/2013 at Semple Stadium – Tipperary 2-17 Kilkenny 1-19  (Group); 26/2/2012 at Nowlan Park – Kilkenny 2-17 Tipperary 0-15 (Group); 12/2/2011 at Semple Stadium – Kilkenny 1-17 Tipperary 1-10 (Group); 7/3/2010 at Semple Stadium – Tipperary 1-14 Kilkenny 0-13 (Group) and finally 3/5/2009 at Semple Stadium – Kilkenny 2-26  Tipperary 4-17 (Final, aet). Hopefully a positive result will favour Tipp on Saturday and address the imbalance in the stats above.

Best wishes to the team on Saturday evening as they continue to make progress in the league. As this is the last home game for the league rounds it would be a fitting tribute to all the hard work gone in so far this year to have a huge home support behind the team for this eagerly awaited clash.

The referee will be James Owens (Loch Garman).

SENIOR FOOTBALL Due to the unfortunate weather conditions of last week the Roinn 3 Allianz Football League game between Tipperary and Longford was postponed and will go ahead instead at 5pm this Saturday evening in Semple Stadium.

Best wishes to the team as a win will keep the pressure on Louth at the top of the table.

The referee will be Martin McNally (Muineachán)

Tickets are on sale for both games on Saturday at gaa.ie and selected SuperValu and Centra stores, with adult tickets costing €15 and U16’s go free. Buy before match day and get 20% off adult tickets. U21 FOOTBALL This Wednesday night, March 8th, all roads lead to Limerick’s Gaelic Grounds as the Tipperary football team travel to play Limerick in the EirGrid Munster U21Football Championship Quarter-Final tie at 7.30pm. Best wishes to the team and their management team headed by Declan Browne (Moyle Rovers) in his first game in charge as manager and we wish him and his side every success in the championship. Hopefully success will be achieved on Wednesday which will mean a visit to meet Cork in Pairc Úi Rinn a week later.

COUNTY LEAGUES

Only two games in the Tipperary Water County Football Leagues survived the inclement weather of last week and the fixtures committee will be hoping that the coming weekend goes off without a hitch as the Tipperary Water County Hurling Leagues get under way in earnest. With a host of games right across the weekend from Friday to Sunday there is plenty to keep club supporters enthused as the senior club season finally gets under way.

For a full list of fixtures please check the Tipperary GAA website https://tipperary.gaa.ie/

ROSCREA – DONEGAL AHL CONNECTION

Roscrea native, Davin Flynn was the hero for Donegal last weekend as his 2-8 out of 2-14 saw Donegal defeat Tyrone in Roinn 3A of the Allianz Hurling League.

TIPPERARY GAA YEARBOOKS 1970-1992 NOW ONLINE

For the past couple of months staff at the Tipperary Studies department of Tipperary Co. Council Library Service have been busy digitising back issues of the Tipperary GAA Yearbook, with the kind support of the Yearbook Committee and Tipperary GAA Co. Board.

The Tipperary Studies digitisation project aims to make available online a range of sources, both historical and genealogical, which are part of the fabric which makes up the history of Tipperary.

Many of these documents are unique to Tipperary Studies and one of the aims of the project is to make these sources available to everyone, free of charge.

One aspect of the project was to make available back issues of the yearbook, of which twenty-two copies from 1970-1992, can now be viewed online at www.tipperarystudies.ie

It is the intention of those involved in the project to make all yearbooks available in time, in conjunction with a broad range of material pertaining to Tipperary which has yet to be digitisied. Tipperary Studies welcomes the donation of material for this project, which they may not have, ranging from match programmes and annuals to photographs and negatives.

All items are currently archived at the Tipperary Studies Department, Source Library, Cathedral St., Thurles, where a range of other material may be seen, including the Sam Melbourne scrapbook collection.
