2024 Tailteann Cup

Our Senior Footballers interest in the 2024 Tailteann Cup came to an end last Saturday afternoon when they were defeated by Limerick in the Preliminary Quarter Final. The game took place in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale in what were ideal conditions for a football game.

Having defeated Wexford in the previous game, there was hopes for a bigger push for the Premier County, but in the end, our Championship ends with four defeats from five, having suffered a surprise loss to Waterford in the Munster Championship. Tipperary weren’t helped with the loss of three men during the game through injury, while team captain Stephen O’Brien was also ruled out through injury prior to throw-in.

Scorers for Tipperary: Sean O’Connor 0-5 (0-3 frees); Paudie Feehan 1-1; Peter McGarry 0-2; Teddy Doyle ,Stephen Quirke 0-1 each.

Tipperary: Evan Comerford; Emmet Moloney, Jimmy Feehan, James Morris; Mark Stokes, Paudie Feehan, Stephen Grogan; Liam Boland, Stephen Quirke; Conall Kennedy, Jack Kennedy, Kieran Costello; Peter McGarry, Seán O’Connor, Eoghan Power. Subs: Shane O’Connell for Morris (inj – 10); Conor Cadell for Stokes (inj – 31); Teddy Doyle for J Kennedy (inj – 40); Rory O’Dowd for Boland (52); Mark Russell for McGarry (59).

Following the game on Saturday, Paul Kelly stepped down as manager along with his management team. The process to appoint his successor will now commence and it is hoped to have a new management team in place prior to the commencement of the County Football Championship or as near as possible to that time.

All Ireland Minor Hurling Semi Final

Our Minor Hurlers will travel to the familiar surroundings of the TUS Gaelic Grounds, next Saturday afternoon June 15th where they will play Galway for the right to progress to this year’s All Ireland Minor Hurling Final.

Having overcome Clare in the Munster Final a few short week’s ago, Tipperary have reset and are now fully focused on the task that lies ahead of them on Saturday. We wish the players and team management the very best of luck. Throw in at the TUS Gaelic Grounds is at 2pm and tickets for the game can be purchased on the Ticketmaster website.

FBD Insurance County Hurling League Finals

Last weekend was a very busy weekend in the FBD Insurance County Hurling Leagues as six finals took place. In Division 1, Drom & Inch and Upperchurch Drombane met in Templemore on Saturday afternoon and after extra time it was the men in black and amber who emerged victorious on a full time score of 0-26 to 1-21.

In Division 2 goals were the difference as West Tipperary’s Cashel King Cormacs overcame Clonakenny by 2-15 to 0-15, while in Division 3 Ballingarry proved too strong for Moneygall. The South Tipperary side enjoyed a eleven point winning margin in Templetuohy, 1-24 to 1-13.

The Division 4 final between Moyle Rovers and Carrick Davins was one of the best games of the weekend and like the Division 1 final, extra time was required to decide the destination of the cup. In the end Moyle Rovers had the narrowest of wins over their South Tipperary counterparts, winning by 3-19 to 2-21.

Thurles Sarsfields and Lattin Cullen met in the Division 5 final and it was The Sars who proved to be that bit too strong for their opponents on this occasion as they won by 0-23 to 1-08. Finally in Division 6, Newcastle and Emly played out another very entertaining and close battle that saw Emly edge out their opponents by 0-15 to 0-14.

Thanks to all the clubs who hosted the various finals over the course of the weekend for making their facilities available and for having them all in such wonderful condition. Thanks also to our referees and officials who all did very good jobs and whom without we could have no games.

FBD Semple Stadium Power Outage

Last Sunday was a big day for FBD Semple Stadium with the Munster Senior Hurling Final being played in the venue. A lot of preparation went in to making sure that everything was ready for the day and to make sure that all supporters who were attending the game would have an enjoyable and memorable day. However, some time before the game was due to commence the stadium experienced a power outage. It took some time to locate the fault which was eventually traced to the incoming electricity supply and rectified. During the outage all power with the exception of emergency power, was off. This caused many challenges none more so than with the stadiums water pumps circulating water to the toilets which were out of action. This caused major issues and even though water was restored, and cleaning staff did their best, it was not possible to return the facilities to the proper standard in the time available. The Semple Stadium Management Committee have apologised for what was a less than satisfactory situation for players and supporters a like.

Healthy Eating in the GAA

The GAA are firm advocates for a healthy, well-balanced and sensible diet. Balance, flexibility, variation and experimentation are key to building healthy eating habits and a developing a healthy relationship with food. Food is fuel and should be enjoyable, there is no such thing as “good” or “bad” foods, balance is key. The benefits of a well- balanced diet are both physical and emotional and include;

  • Optimised energy levels
  • Increased levels of concentration
  • Reduced risk of diet related illnesses
  • Strong bones and teeth
  • General feelings of wellbeing

Healthy Eating Guidelines (Republic of Ireland) and The Eat Well Plate (Northern Ireland) can be downloaded from the GAA website to guide individuals on the most recent, evidence based recommendations. In addition, the GAA have developed a fantastic resource, Recipes for Success booklet, aimed at young GAA players who want to maximise their performance by fuelling their bodies with real food adequately.
