Allianz Football League
Tipperary opened their League campaign in style with a comprehensive win over Carlow in Dr Cullen Park with the final score Tipperary 2-24 to Carlows 1-8. The vibes coming from the training field ahead of this game were good and it’s very satisfying for management to see this positivity transferring on to the field. No time to rest on their laurels though as we face a lot stiffer test next Sunday against Waterford in the Clonmel Sportsfield at 2pm. Looking forward to big local support to get behind this team who are putting in a super effort. (Match report elsewhere)
SH Waterford Crystal
The Tipperary v UL semi final finally went ahead last Sun in Dr Morris Park, Thurles. The Nenagh pitch was examined Saturday and passed playable despite some surface water but following a challenge game in Dr Morris Park on Sat night it was felt by Co Board officials that less damage would be done to the Thurles pitch. Sorry for any inconvenience to Nenagh Eire Óg Club. The game was played in good weather and underfoot conditions and provided plenty of talking points for the few hundred supporters in attendance. Tipp used 20 players most of whom had not played against Cork on Sat night in a challenge game and included some of last year’s All Ireland winning Intermediate panel like Padraig Heffernan and Ruairi Gleeson as well as former panel members getting another chance like Thomas Stapleton and Mickey Heffernan. The rest were part of the current training panel which restricted the selectors as at least eight are carrying niggling injuries. Tipp dominated most of this game and led at half time by 1-19 to 0-10. UL rallied at the start of the second half helped by the accuracy of free taker PJ Scully (son of former Tipp player Michael Scully, Roscrea). Other Tipp players to shine for UL were keeper Shane Hassett (Drom), Dara Quinn, Ml O Flaherty, Brian Stapleton, Tommy Heffernan, Pa Ryan (Clonakenny), and substitute Bill Maher. Tipp ran out easy winners in the end with the final score 2-30 to 0-20. John O Dwyer had 1-9 on the scoreboard at half time before he was replaced. Tipp now play All Ireland champions Clare in the Waterford Crystal final this Friday Feb 7th under lights in Sixmilebridge at 7.30pm. Supporters are advised to travel early as a large Clare support is anticipated. Last Sat night Tipp also played a very competitive challenge game in Dr Morris Park against Cork and the Rebels came out on top with the score 2-15 to 1-16. The Cork goals came one in each half from keeper Anthony Nash with his customary free taking style which will be a big talking point under a motion at Congress.

Fund Raising with GOAL
GOAL have been delighted in the past to have had Tipperary GAA stars involved with their organisation, promoting their work. In 2010 the GOAL Challenge was held in Tipp after the fantastic All-Ireland win over Kilkenny and they raised thousands at that home-coming game. Tesco have picked GOAL as one of their national bag packing partners, so on March 8th of this year they will be bag packing in 91 Tesco stores right across Ireland. There are a total of 6 Tesco stores in Tipperary where they can bag pack in – Thurles, Clonmel, Tipp Town, Nenagh, Cashel and Roscrea. It would be great if juvenile clubs in these areas were interested in taking this on board and of course GOAL can look at how they might split the money raised on the day so that the clubs involved also have an incentive to take part. They have already agreed this with Waterford GAA who are covering the 5 stores in their county. For more details call at any time to discuss this further with James Kelly GOAL Ireland at 0851526916
