Allianz Hurling and Football Leagues

Our senior hurlers travelled to the TUS Gaelic Grounds last Sunday afternoon to play Limerick in Round 3 of the Allianz Hurling League, and while the result may have went the way of the hosts, Tipperary will be pleased with many aspects of their performance while also knowing that they have lots of areas where they can and will improve in.

The game was played at very high tempo and saw the sides level three times in the opening 10 minutes – with the first twelve scores shared by eleven different players. Among the scores were Alan Tynan and Jake Morris for the Premier County, but Limerick then went on a run of scores as David Reidy, Diarmaid Byrnes and Aidan O’Connor put them into a three point advantage. The moment of the game came in the 25th minute of the first half, when Sean Kenneally sent a most magnificent goal to the top corner. He doubled on a Darragh McCarthy hand pass to score a brilliant goal.

Scorers for Tipperary: Darragh McCarthy 0-9 (9fs), Sean Kenneally 1-3, Jake Morris 0-4, Alan Tynan 0-3, Willie Connors, Michael Breen, Bryan O’Mara, Gearoid O’Connor 0-1 each.

Tipperary: Barry Hogan; Robert Doyle, Eoghan Connolly, Michael Breen; Seamus Kennedy, Ronan Maher, Bryan O’Mara; Willie Connors, Craig Morgan; Gearoid O’Connor, Jake Morris, Alan Tynan; Darragh Stakelum, Sean Kenneally, Darragh McCarthy.
Subs: Brian McGrath for Kennedy (46); Conor Bowe for Stakelum (46); Michael Corcoran for Morgan (57); John McGrath for O’Connor (64); Johnny Ryan for Connors (64).

Next up for our senior hurlers is a clash with Cork in FBD Semple Stadium on Saturday February 22nd.

Our senior footballers enjoyed a weekend off last weekend and now prepare to play Waterford this Saturday evening at 6.30pm in Dungarvan. Having secured 3 points from a possible 4 in their opening games, Philly Ryan’s men will be hoping to secure another 2 points from this game. However as all Tipperary football supporters will know, victories against our neighbours are very hard earned.

Tickets For Allianz League Games

Supporters are once again reminded that tickets for all Allianz League games must be purchased either online or in selected Centra and Supervalu stores as tickets will not be on sale at any venue. Supporters are also reminded that there will be no Tap & Go in operation at match venues and as is the GAA’s policy for all competitions, no cash will be taken at the turnstiles. Supporters are asked to plan their trip well in advance of each game and this should include making sure that you have your tickets purchased before departing for the game.

GAA Hurling Team of the Week

Congratulations to Sean Kenneally and Michael Breen who were both chosen on the GAA team of the week on the back of their very impressive performances in last weekends Allianz League game against Limerick.

Leinster Minor Football League

Well done to the Tipperary Minor Footballers who overcame a very strong Wicklow side by 2-09 to 3-05 in the LensterLeague last Saturday afternoon.

TUS Corn Dhonncha Uí Nuanáin (Under 19 B Football) Final

Congratulations to Cashel Community School who were crowned Munster Under 19B Football champions following their 1-08 to 1-05 win over Coláiste na Sceilge from Kerry, last weekend. This was a controlled and measured performance from Cashel Community School as they collected the Corn Dhonnacha Uí Nuanáin football crown after doing enough to see off their opponents in a game played in Ballyagran.

This contest was kept alive right to the final whistle by the Kerry side, but they’d left themselves too much to do against a strong and athletic Cashel outfit.

The winners will point to the key opening goal from Niall Hallissey, which took the wind out of the Sceilge challenge, as the crucial moment. The losing side did find a stoppage time goal from sub Ryan O’Connor, but the clock beat them after an entertaining contest.

Cashel Community School follow in the footsteps of Tipperary town school, Abbey CBS, who won this competition in both 2022 and 2023. They led this game for all bar a total of ninety seconds.

Leading from captain Sam Hall’s opening minute free, the Premier side were pegged back when Michael Scanlon’s dropping shot went over via the crossbar. However, the reply was swift, as Charlie Walsh curled over a free from close range.

Possession and territory were certainly in the winners’ favour for most of the first half, with Hall curling their first from play on the quarter mark before adding another when a goal looked likely.

Hall was at the end of a Tom O’Driscoll and Niall Hallissey counter attack, but blazed his shot over to extend the lead. Colliding with the keeper, David Murphy, Hall certainly was curtailed with an ankle problem for much of the remainder.

By half-time it was 0-5 to 0-2, with Rory O’Mahony and Tom Clifford (free) exchanging points late in the half. Cashel had also registered five wides as they looked to kill off the Kingdom hope.

However, after soaking up the early Cashel pressure after the resumption, Coláiste na Sceilge found a great point from David Kennedy with their first shot before Clifford made no mistake with a free. Suddenly, it was a one point game.

The game defining goal arrived soon after, with Hallissey pouncing on a breaking ball to drill to the net. Niall Hallissey’s dropping shot was a contest between Seamus Kennedy and the goalkeeper allowing the Cashel King Cormacs forward the space to blast to the net.

Crucially, Enda Sheehan got the next score for Gearóid O’Driscoll’s men, but Cashel hit back with two quick-fire points. Ryan O’Sullivan curled two beautiful efforts within sixty seconds to open up a five point lead. Walsh’s late free looked to have sealed it but Sheehan fed O’Connor who scrambled the ball home with a minute remaining.

The Kerry students couldn’t muster another opening and the silverware heads back to Tipperary after a quality team display, under the stewardship of Robert Costigan and Paddy Carroll.

Scorers for Cashel Community School: N Hallissey 1-0; S Hall 0-3 (0-1 free); C Walsh (0-2 frees), R O’Sullivan 0-2 each; R O’Mahony 0-1.

CASHEL COMMUNITY SCHOOL: E O’Neill (Cashel King Cormacs); A Tobin (Clonmel Óg), C Lonergan (Golden Kilfeacle), T O’Driscoll (Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams); C Ryan (Cashel King Cormacs), N O’Flynn (Fethard), S Kennedy (Clonoulty Rossmore); S Cooney (Clerihan), C Walsh (Fethard); H Fogarty (Golden Kilfeacle), S Hall (Golden Kilfeacle) (Capt), R O’Mahony (Fethard); N Hallissey (Cashel King Cormacs), C Bourke (Rosegreen), R O’Sullivan (Clerihan).
Subs: C Hall (Golden-Kilfeacle) for Fogarty (43); B O’Donoghue (Cashel King Cormacs) for O’Sullivan (52); W Colville (Rosegreen) for Bourke (52); B Gleeson (Boherlahan-Dulla) for S Hall (57).

Munster Junior B Football Competition

Best of luck to Burgess who take on Beale from Kerry in the semi final of the Munster Junior B Football Competition, this Sunday afternoon in Ballyagran at 2pm. The North Tipp club will be hoping to secure another memorable win that would see them into the final where they would play either Goleen of Cork or Limerick side St. Kierans.

Condolences

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Michael Coleman. He was one of Galway’s greatest ever players, representing his County with distinction from Minor all the way up to Senior level. The winner of a All-Ireland medal at Under 21 in 1983, he went on to play an integral role at midfield when Galway retained the All-Ireland Senior title against Tipperary in 1988.
Michael was also a very proud Abbeyknockmoy man and played a major role in many memorable victories down through the year’s, none more so than when they captured the County Senior Hurling title in 1988.

Tipperary GAA extends our deepest sympathies to Michael’s wife Mary, daughter Sinead and son Dara, his extended family, the Abbeyknockmoy Hurling club, his local community and the Galway County Board at this very difficult time.

We also extend our sincere sympathies to the family of former Dublin football great, Paddy Cullen who has also passed away. During a glittering career, Paddy won three All-Ireland medals, six Leinster Championships, two National Football Leagues, and four All-Stars. He also took charge of the Dublin senior footballers between 1990 and 1992, winning Leinster and National League titles.

Tipperary GAA send our condolences to Paddy’s wife Ann, his family, former teammates, friends and the Dublin County Board at this sad time..

GAA establish Ethics and Integrity Commission

GAA Ard Stiúrthóir, Tom Ryan, revealed in his Annual Report which was published last weekend that the Association has established an Ethics and Integrity Commission. This Commission will provide advice to Association units and members in relation to matters of ethics and integrity.

“Our clubs and members increasingly encounter situations which stretch the limits of our responsibility or which are not governed by our rules,” wrote Ryan in his Annual Report.

“Quite often these are situations which were never envisaged. Clearly where there are gaps in our rules we will amend them accordingly, but not every eventuality can – or should – be legislated for.

“Not having a rule doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have a position. That is why we have constituted an Ethics and Integrity Commission.

“This body will assess any issue concerning ethical standards or integrity in relation to Association activity, which do not fall within the remit of the standard disciplinary process.

“It will also engage in education, research, investigation and the provision of advice in relation to matters of ethics and integrity.

“Most importantly, it will also provide advice on the best approach in appropriate cases. With their guidance I believe we, and the Association as a whole, will be better equipped to deal appropriately with the most trying of circumstances and maintain our high standards.

“The initial proposal is to establish this function with advisory capacity within our current structures, but I do expect it to be enshrined in rule eventually.”
