Allianz Football League
Following their impressive opening game away to Carlow, Tipperary were brought down to earth in the second round against Waterford in the Clonmel Sportsfield last Sunday and were looking to come away with a share of the points. In the first half the Decies boys never allowed us to play with any fluency but when we went three points up ten minutes into the second half and the breeze at our backs it looked like we would kick on. But it was Waterford who turned the screw and had the opportunity to score the winning point in stoppage time but their top scorer Paul Whyte put it just wide of the post and Tipp’s blushes were saved. A crowd of 490 spectators watched this game which was disappointing in a venue famed for its football hinterland. Tipp have a break for three weeks now before we head across the water to play London on Sun March 2nd. (Match report elsewhere)
SH Waterford Crystal
Congrats to the Tipp Senior Hurlers on beating All Ireland champions Clare in the Waterford Crystal final last Friday night under lights in the Gaelic Grounds Limerick. Tipp opened impressively and were seven points in front coming up to half time but a scoring burst by the Banner boys yielded 3-1 in five minutes and suddenly Tipp trailed by one point at the break. But in the second half Tipp went into cruise control and ran up a 14 point lead to win by 4-22 to 3-11. James Woodlock was captain for the night and received the Waterford Crystal Trophy from Munster Council Chairman, Robert Frost.
