FBD Insurance County Championships

Round 3 of the FBD Insurance County Hurling Championships took place last weekend with games taking place in the Senior, Premier Intermediate and Intermediate championships.

Group 1 was the first group in to action and there was no shortage of drama in both games. In Holycross, close neighbours and rivals Borris-Ileigh and Drom & Inch were both hoping to keep their championship aliveand in what was a well contested game, it looked as if the North men would be the ones to come out on top as they took a 9 point lead in the first half. However in typical fashion, Drom & Inch did not give in and in the end fought back to claim the spoils on a full time score of 0-27 to 2-19. All eyes were then on the other game in the group which was between Toomevara and Kilruane MacDonaghs in Nenagh. Again this was a very competitive game that saw the advantage switch between the sides on several occasions during the game. Ultimately it was Toomevara who prevailed on a score of 2-20 to 1-19. The results in both games meant that Toomevara and Kilruane MacDonaghs progress to the knockout stages, while Borris-Ileigh who finished in fourth place will now contest a relegation semi final.

In group 2 Thurles Sarsfields secured top spot with a comfortable 2-28 to 1-14 win over Roscrea in Templemore on Sunday afternoon. At the same time in Cashel Moycarkey Borris and CJ Kickhams Mullinahone met for a game that would decide who would qualify for the second Quarter Final spot. Having started the competition with a very impressive win over Roscrea before losing to Thurles Sarsfields in round 2, Moycarkey Borris were tipped by many to progress, and in the end that was the case as they had 8 points to spare over Mullinahone, winning in the end by 2-19 to 2-11. So the final standings in group 2 see Thurles Sarsfields on top with Moycarkey Borris qualifying in second place, while it will be Roscrea who now enter the relegation playoffs.

Group 3 also had a number of possible permutations prior to the commencement of the final round of games, so supporters from all four clubs were keeping a close eye on what was happening in the corresponding fixture. In Templederry, Holycross Ballycahill and Lorrha Dorrha went to battle in a game that provided a total of 7 goals, 5 of which were converted by Lorrha Dorrha on their way to what was a well deserved 5-16 to 2-23 win. In Borrisoleigh, Loughmore Castleiney were hoping to keep their unbeaten run going when they met Nenagh Eire Óg in front of a big crowd in Borrisoleigh. Loughmore Castleiney got off to the perfect start with a goal inside the first minute of the game, but anyone who thought that the North Tipperary side would lie down were very much mistaken and so the game developed in to a fiercely contested event that saw Loughmore Castleiney only having the bare minimum to spare, as they won by 2-20 to 1-22. The result meant that Loughmore Castleiney top group 3 and as Holycross Ballycahill were defeated in their game, Nenagh Eire Óg claimed the second qualification spot. Unfortunately for Lorrha Dorrha their win was not enough to keep them safe and they will now go in to the relegation battle.

In Group 4 Table toppers JK Brackens and Kiladangan met in Dolla to decide first and second place and in a very one sided game it was Kiladangan who proved to be far too strong for their opponents on this occasion as they cruised to a 2-30 to 0-16 win and in doing so they claimed top spot in the group, while JK Brackens will also progress to the Quarter Finals in second place. In The Ragg, Templederry Kenyons were hoping to claim their first points of the group and in doing so were hoping to steer clear of relegation. However it was not to be for the North side as the men from the West, Clonoulty Rossmore just had that little bit more scoring strength that saw them win in the end by 3-23 to 1-20. This result now means that it will be Templederry who will continue on to the relegation battle.

In the Premier Intermediate Championship, it will be Carrick Swan who will go in to the Quarter Finals as group winners even though they came up short in their final group game against Silvermines on Sunday evening in Gortnahoe, “The Mines” winning by  1-22 to 0-23 in a good game of hurling. Second spot in the group was claimed by Upperchurch Drombane, who overcame the test of Ballina on a final score of 4-19 to 0-15 in Toomevara. Both results mow mean that it will be Silvermines who will have to do battle in the relegation semi finals.

In Group 2 Eire Óg Annacarty and Cashel King Cormacs met in Clonoulty in a game where neither side could be separated at the final whistle as the game ended Cashel King Cormacs 3-16 to 0-25. In Littleton, it looked for much of the game that Moyne Templetuohy were going to cause a surprise as they lead Gortnahoe for long periods of the game. Ultimately Moyne Templetuohy had to give way to a sharper Gortnahoe Glengoole side who claimed victory on a 0-21 to 0-20 final score. As a result of both games it will be Eire Óg Annacarty who will top the group, followed in second place by Gortnahoe Glengoole. Cashel King Cormacs who won the West title earlier in theyyear will now contest a preliminary Quarter Final, while Moyne Templetuohy enter the relegation battle for the second time in 12 months.

In Group 3. Thurles Sarsfields will head in to the Quarter Finals as group winners thanks to another very impressive display that saw them having 7 points to spare in their victory over Clonakenny on Saturday in Holycross, while second spot has been claimed by Boherlahan Dualla who defeated a luckless Newport side by 1-16 to 0-16 in Cappawhite. As a result of the final round of games it will be Newport who head back in to the relegation stages with clonakenny finishing in third place.

Group 4 saw somewhat of a surprise result happening as Killenaule who were fancied by many prior to the commencement of the competition, being defeated on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-13 by South Tipperary rivals St Marys when they met on Friday evening in Fethard. At the same time in Templederry, Burgess secured a very good 4-16 to 1-17 win over Sean Treacys, so as a result of both games, St Marys top the group with Burgess claiming second spot while it will be Sean Treacys who will now have to focus on a relegation battle.

In Group 1 of the intermediate Championship it will be Golden Kilfeacle and Cappawhite who progress to the Quarter Finals, while Ballybacon Grange finish in bottom spot. In group 2 Ballingarry and Borrisokane will progress with Skeheenarinky heading into relegation, while in group 3 Shannon Rovers top the group, Portroe are in second while Drom & Inch who claimed the Mid title will play a Preliminary Quarter Final. It will be Arravale Rovers who go in to relegation. In group 4, Moneygall top the group with Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams in second place, while Upperchurch Drombane go in to relegation.his coming weekend will see the final round of games taking place in the Senior, Intermediate and Premier Junior football championships. Tickets for all these games are now available to purchase on the ticket section of the Tipperary GAA website while Tap & Go will also be in operation at all venues.

Kicking for Autism 32

On September 2nd 2023 Tori and Megan set out to kick a point at all 51 GAA pitches in Tyrone. Their aim was to raise awareness of all those affected by Autism. Tori’s younger brother is autistic and as a family they realise how much more there is to learn about autism but also how important it is to feel supported. This turned out to be a hugely successful and emotional day and the support the girls received from all 51 clubs was amazing. The girls also managed to raise the superb amount of money £18000 which went in full to Autism NI to help continue their vital work. Following the success of “Kicking for Autism“ the girls decided they wanted to get this message across the whole island of Ireland. THEREFORE WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THIS YEAR TORI AND MEGAN WILL EMBARK ON “KICKING FOR AUTISM 32“ The plan is that on the weekend of the 29th August to the 1st September the girls will kick a point at all 32 county pitches in Ireland !! All monies donated will go in full to Autism NI  who we are delighted will be supporting us again, and also Asiam.ie  the Dublin based autism charity. If you would like to meet the girls and support them on their journey, they will be in FBD Semple Stadium this Saturday morning at 9.45am.
