MUNSTER SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Not for the faint hearted, Tipperary’s Munster Senior Hurling Championship rollercoaster journey continues after another enthralling battle in the Gaelic Grounds last Sunday. The heat of the day was replicated by the heat of battle with the result overshadowed by the awarding of what has been dubbed a ‘ghost goal’ by some commentators to Tipperary, following a free by Jason Forde. The goal stood and Tipperary are still in the hunt in this year’s championship.
After a pulsating and nerve wrecking final quarter Tipperary and Waterford finished up all square 2-22 apiece after this round 3 encounter, with the Tipp goals coming from Patrick Maher (Lorrha-Dorrha) and Jason Forde (Silvermines).
Congratulations to Brendan Maher (Borris-Ileigh) who was named Littlewoods Ireland Man of the Match and Brendan received his award from Geoff Scully, MD Littlewoods Ireland, pictured right.
Tipperary minds will have moved on immediately as they continue with recovery and preparations for the visit of Clare to Semple Stadium on Sunday next, June 10th, for round 4 of the Munster Championship with throw-in at 2pm.
There have been 51 championship meetings between Clare and Tipperary with Tipperary on 36 wins to Clare’s 11 and there were 4 draws. Clare’s ‘wins’ in the 1889 and 1938 semi-finals, came via objections, after Tipperary had achieved victory in both games.
Of the last ten meetings Tipperary hold strong ascendancy with 8 victories to 2 for Clare, the results of which are as follows; 1999 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh – Clare 1-21 Tipperary 1-11 (S/F Replay); 2000 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh – Tipperary 2-19 Clare 1-14 (S/F); 2001 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh – Tipperary 0-15 Clare 0-14 (S/F); 2002 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh – Tipperary 1-18 Clare 2-13 (Round 1); 2003 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh – Clare 2-17 Tipperary 0-14 (Q/F); 2005 at the Gaelic Grounds – Tipperary 2-14 Clare 0-14 (S/F); 2008 at the Gaelic Grounds – Tipperary 2-21 Clare 0-19 (Final); 2009 at the Gaelic Grounds – Tipperary 3-18 Clare 1-22 (S/F); 2011 at the Gaelic Grounds – Tipperary 4-19 Clare 1-19 (S/F) and 2017 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh – Tipperary 0-28 Clare 3-16 (All-Ireland Q/F).
We send best wishes to the team on Sunday as they complete their four match run in the championship rounds.
We appreciate while not all supporters can get to games each Sunday for a variety of reasons, the appeal goes out to supporters to please get behind the team on Sunday and make Semple Stadium a blue and gold fortress. The players and management really appreciate all your support and the added ’16th’ roar from the stands is wanted now more than ever as our senior hurlers go in search of victory to ensure they are still in the frame with one round to go.
The referee on Sunday will be Paud O’Dwyer (Ceatharlach).
Tickets are on pre purchase price of €20 for stand tickets and €15 for terrace tickets. This price is available until midnight on the Saturday. The match day price will increase by €5, so stand tickets bought on match day will be €25 and terrace tickets will be €20. Juvenile tickets (U-16) will be €5 no matter when they are purchased. Students and OAP’s will receive a concession of €5.
MUNSTER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
The Tipperary minor hurlers unfortunately got caught late on in round 3 of the Electric Ireland Munster Hurling Minor Championship as Waterford rallied late to snatch an unlikely 2-13 to 3-9 win in the Gaelic Grounds last Sunday. Two goals from Seán Hayes (Kiladangan) and one from Devon Ryan (Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams) appeared to put Tipp in control before the late Déise charge.
Next Sunday Tipperary complete their league round series as they play Clare in round 4 in Semple Stadium with throw in at 12noon ahead of the senior fixture.
We send best wishes to the panel and their management team going into Sunday’s match.
The referee will be Mike Sexton (Limerick).
U21 HURLING CHALLENGE
Hot on the heels of last Sundays hugely entertaining Munster senior hurling championship game, Tipperary and Waterford renew rivalry in Clonmel Sportsfield, this Saturday, June 9th, in what should be a cracking U21 hurling challenge game. Both sides are preparing for upcoming championship games and the cream of young talent on both sides will be on view.
The game starts as 7.30pm sharp and is being held as a fundraiser by the South Tipperary G.A.A. Centre who are raising funds to resurface the car park attached to the Centre which is badly in need of repair. It’s an opportunity for supporters particularly in South Tipperary and West Waterford to view their sides in action in advance of the major championship games ahead. TEAM TIPPERARAY GAA RACE DAY
Coming up next on the fundraising agenda is the Team Tipperary GAA Race Day at the Galway Races on Monday, July 30th. This is our fourth Galway Races venture continuing very successful outings for the past 3 years. The Galway Races Summer Festival is renowned as a premier and most colourful racing festival. While it is a major sporting event, it also appeals to a much wider audience than just the racing fans. With the Killanin Stand Suites, there is something for everyone whether you are entertaining family, friends or business clients. This is the ideal format for mixing business with pleasure, whilst surrounded by the atmosphere and excitement that is the Galway Races.
Development plans for 2018 and onwards are in progress and the Team Tipperary GAA Race Day is now firmly established as a successful fundraising venture. A new car park in Dr. Morris Park for 200 cars is nearing completion which will be a major benefit to all. Planning is being submitted too, hopefully by mid-2018, for new facilities in the Kinane (Old) Stand as part of the Centre of Excellence adjacent to Dr. Morris Park.
We are also supporting LIT on their Thurles Campus plans which are well advanced for a new all-weather pitch which will be a welcome addition to Gaelic games in Tipperary and further afield, so exciting times ahead.
If you or anyone you know is interested in racing, or just a good day out and who might take a seat or two or a table and support our fundraising efforts, please contact Tim Floyd, County Secretary, 087 2591747 secretary.tipperary@gaa.ie for bookings and further details.
