Tipperary GAA Scene – 24th July 2018

ELECTRIC IRELAND MINOR HURLING CHAMPIOHSHIP

The traditional rivalry will continue on Sunday next, July 29th, when Tipperary and Kilkenny meet in the Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor Hurling Semi-Final in Croke Park where throw-in time is at 1:30pm.

It was the first day of the month that Tipperary last saw competitive action when they won the Munster Final while Kilkenny on the other hand have had the extra benefit of 2 matches in the round robin series coming into the semi-final. With that in mind it will be all to play for on Sunday as both sides go at it in earnest at headquarters.

The counties have met on 22 occasions in the minor championship and its honours even, 11 wins apiece going into Sunday’s fixture. You can rest assured local bragging rights will be far from the minds of the respective camps with a coveted spot in the All-Ireland final the main prize on the day. A date with destiny then awaits against either Dublin or Galway in the final on Sunday, August 19th.

So to set the scene the previous encounters between the sides read as follows;

BORD GAIS ENERGY U21 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Tipperary will meet Galway in the Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland Under 21 Hurling Championship Semi-Final in Cusack Park, Ennis on Saturday week August 4th at 2pm. Extra time will be played if necessary.

Cork will play Wexford in the other semi-final at 4pm in Nowlan Park on the same day.

Best wishes to Sean Lonergan (Moyle Rovers) as he takes charge of the Electric Ireland Minor Football Quarter-Final between Kerry and Roscommon on Saturday next in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick.

CLUB FIXTURES

In the Tipperary Water County Hurling League Division 3 Final the full time result last Sunday read, Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams 4-17 Sean Treacys 2-13.

The Tipperary Water Hurling League Division 1 Final between Borris-Ileigh and Nenagh Éire Óg originally scheduled for last weekend has been put back to next Tuesday, July 31st in Nenagh with a 7:30pm start. Also, on Tuesday next is the Division 5 hurling league final between Grangemockler-Ballyneale and Kilsheelan-Kilcash which will be played in Davin Park also at 7:30pm.

There are 3 Tipperary Water County Football League finals on the fixture list for this week, starting with the Division 3 final this Thursday, July 26th, where Killenaule and St. Patrick’s meet in Fethard at 8pm, the other two finals throw-in at 12noon on Sunday next, July 29th. In Division 1, Clonmel Commercials play Moyle Rovers in Cahir while in the Division 2 final, Cahir and Rockwell Rovers meet in Bansha.

On the divisional front Killenaule took the honours in the Clonmel Oil South Senior Hurling final seeing off the Mullinahone challenge 0-20 to 1-12.

Extra-time was required in the Gleeson Quarries Mid Senior Football Final with Loughmore-Castleiney eventually overcoming Upperchurch Drombane 1-12 to 1-9 after an exciting contest.

Hurling takes centre stage at divisional level again this week as the semi-finals in the Mid and North take place. The first of the Centenary Mid Senior hurling Championship semi-finals takes place this Wednesday night, July 25th when Thurles Sarsfields and JK Brackens square up in Templetuohy at 7.30pm. Then on Friday evening, July 27th in the Ragg, Loughmore-Castleiney take on Holycross-Ballycahill also at 7.30pm.

In the North both semi-finals are down for decision this Friday night, with 7:15pm throw-in time. In Dolla, Kilruane MacDonaghs lock horns with Toomevara while in Templederry, Kiladangan will meet Nenagh Éire Óg.

Clubs are reminded that on the weekend of August 12th, round two of the Tipperary Water county senior hurling championship, intermediate hurling championship and the Seamus O Riain cup will take place.

On the weekend of August 19th, round two of the Tipperary Water county senior football championship and the intermediate football championship will be held. However, that comes with a word of caution that part or all of round two of the senior football championship on that weekend may be postponed if Tipperary reach the All-Ireland U21 hurling final.

CAMOGIE

The Tipperary senior camogie team drew 0-13 apiece with Dublin in their final Liberty Insurance Senior Championship Group 2 match last Sunday. Finishing second in the group they now play Waterford in the All-Ireland Quarter Final which will be played on August 4th in Páirc Uí Chaoimh at 5:30pm.

The intermediate team were also in action last weekend and defeated Kilkenny 2-13 to 2-10 in the Liberty Insurance All Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship.

LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL

Commiserations to the Tipperary Ladies Football team who lost 0-17 to 0-14 to Donegal in Castlerea, last Saturday and will now face a relegation game on August 11th next.

TEAM TIPPERARAY GAA RACE DAY

The Team Tipperary GAA Race Day at the Galway Races goes ahead next Monday, July 30th. This is our fourth Galway Races venture continuing very successful outings for the past 3 years and with all tables sold it promises to be another enjoyable Premier event.

FAIR OF SPORTING MEMORABILIA

On Bank Holiday Monday, August 6th from 12 noon to 3pm there will be a fair of sporting memorabilia at the South Tipperary GAA Centre adjoining Clonmel Sportsfield on the Western Road opposite South Tipperary General Hospital.
