Tipperary Senior Hurlers

Hard luck to the Senior Hurlers who lost out to Cork last Sunday in FBD Semple Stadium on a 0-29 to 1-22 scoreline in the first round of the Minster Senior Hurling Championship. Cork had the better start and were 0-6 to 0-3 ahead after ten minutes but Tipp responded impressively with six unanswered points to move three ahead and take control of the game’s momentum. However, that advantage didn’t last, as Cork regrouped before half time to draw level at 0-13 each. The game remained finely balanced entering the second half, but Tipp were hit hard by a decisive Cork surge between the 43rd and 55th minutes, during which they conceded eight points without reply. That spell ultimately proved the difference, leaving Tipp chasing the game. A well taken goal from Alan Tynan brought the deficit back to four and briefly revived hopes but they couldn’t build sustained momentum afterward. In the end, despite positive phases – particularly their first-half scoring burst – Tipperary were undone by that key second half lapse, with Cork running out 0-29 to 1-22 winners.

Tipperary Scorers:
Jason Forde 0-7 (7f), Darragh McCarthy 0-4 (4f), Alan Tynan 1-0, Jake Morris 0-2, Oisin O’Donoghue 0-2, Eoghan Connolly 0-2 (2f), John McGrath 0-1, Willie Connors 0-1, Conor Stakelum 0-1, Sam O’Farrell 0-1. Darragh Stakelum 0-1.

Attention now quickly turns to Waterford with the Senior Hurlers travelling to Azzurri Walsh Park this Sunday 26th April to face the Déise. Throw in is at 4.00 pm. The game will be live on GAA+ and Tipp FM.

There have been 50 previous championship meetings between the two counties with Tipperary leading the way on 34 victories to Waterford’s 13 while there have been 3 draws (1933, 2018 and 2024). Tipperary also received walkovers in 1889, 1895 and 1922.

Looking at the last five meetings, the last four have been Munster group stage games. Tipperary were victorious last year winning 1-30 to 1-21 in FBD Semple Stadium. The last championship clash between the sides in Azzurri Walsh Park ended in a draw in 2024 finishing 1-27 to 3-21. Waterford had been victorious in the three games prior to that: the 2023 group stage (1-24 to 0-21), the 2022 group stage (2-24 to 2-20) and the 2021 All Ireland Quarter Final (4-28 to 2-27).

Tipperary Senior Footballers

Tickets for the game will be general admission and are available to purchase on Ticketmaster and participating Centra and SuperValu outlets. No tickets will be sold at the venue. The game will be live on Tipp FM.

The last Munster Football Championship meeting between Tipperary and Cork came in 2020, when Tipperary ended an 85-year wait to claim the title with a 0-17 to 0-14 victory, a win that coincided with the Bloody Sunday commemorations.

Cork had been victorious in the two previous meetings — the 2018 Munster Semi Final (1-17 to 0-9) and the 2017 Semi Final (1-10 to 1-9). Prior to that, Tipperary secured a 3-15 to 2-16 win in the 2016 Semi Final  with goals from Michael Quinlivan, Brian Fox, and Conor Sweeney. Cork also won the earliest of the last five encounters, taking the 2014 Semi Final on a 0-16 to 1-11 scoreline with Conor Sweeney again finding the net for the Premier.

Tippeary’s Robbie Kiely and Ger Mulhair pressure Cork’s Paul Kerrigan during the 2014 clash.

Tipperary Under 20 Hurlers

The Tipperary Under 20 Hurlers will be out in action this Wednesday 22nd April at 7.00 pm in FBD Semple Stadium where they take on Clare. Tickets to the game are available through the Munster GAA website or in participating Centra or SuperValu outlets. Tap and Go will also be available at the venue. The game will be broadcast live on the TG4 YouTube page aswell as Tipp FM.

The Tipperary Clare rivalry at this grade has been very evenly matched in recent years with two wins each and a draw from their last five meetings. Tipperary claimed the Munster title last year securing a 3-19 to 1-20 victory over the Banner in the Final having also beaten them in the group stage (3-21 to 0-21). Clare, however, recorded a 0-18 to 1-14 win in the 2024 group stage and were also victorious in the 2023 Semi Final  (3-17 to 0-17). The sides also played out a 0-20 apiece draw in the group stage earlier that year.

The Tipperary Under 20 Hurlers final group game will take place on Wednesday 29th April away to Limerick in TUS Gaelic Grounds.

Tipperary Minor Hurlers

Well done to the Minor Hurlers, who recorded an impressive 2-17 to 0-16 victory over Cork last Friday evening in FBD Semple Stadium in Round 3 of the Electric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling Championship.

Cork made the better start and led 0-4 to 0-2 in the early stages. However, after Zach O’Keeffe was fouled, Chris Dunne converted a penalty to give Tipperary the lead after 14 minutes. Cork regained the advantage five minutes before half time, but Tipperary responded well and went in ahead by 1-6 to 0-8 at the interval.

Cork came out strongly in the second half, hitting four points in as many minutes to move two points in front. A crucial moment arrived in the 39th minute when KJ Dunne found the net to put Tipperary ahead 2-9 to 0-14. From there, Tipperary pushed on, with some excellent shooting from Chris Dunne and Conall Morrissey, while strong contributions from the bench helped seal a deserved victory.

Tipperary Scorers:
Chris Dunne 1-6 (3f, goal pen), Conall Morrisson 0-4, KJ Dunne 1-1, Shane Ryan 0-2 (1 sideline), Ciaran Gantley 0-2, James Finn 0-1, Rian McGrath 0-1.

Sympathy

Tipperary GAA wishes to express its sympathy to the family and friends of Murt Duggan, who passed away recently.

Murt lined out with both Gortnahoe Glengoole and Ballingarry during his playing days. He hurled minor for Tipperary in 1958 and 1959 and was wing forward on the Tipperary side that claimed Munster and All Ireland honours in 1959. He also had a successful colleges career, winning four Fitzgibbon Cup medals with UCD.

He later went on to serve his county on the sideline, acting as a selector with Len Gaynor’s Tipperary management team in the 1990s, helping guide the team to the All-Ireland final in 1997.

May he rest in peace.

Murt Duggan – RIP
