Irish Daily Star National camogie League division 1 round 2
TIPPERARY 1-12 CORK 2-09
Tipperary put up a feisty performance against last years league champions in the camogie grounds last Sunday. Against a young Tipperary team Cork started brightly scoring two quick points in a bid to unsettle the Tipperary girls and the soon added a third point before Tipp replied with a free from Nicole Walsh, Cork pressed on and had the Tipp defence under pressure when a mistake in the Tipp defence in the fifteenth let in Corks Orla Cotter to hand pass into the goal,Cotter was Corks main threat and was proving a handful for Tipps defenders. Shortly afterwards Tipperary’s corner back Ereena Fryday suffered a dislocated shoulder and was replaced by Rosemary Hanafin. Tipperary refocused and points by Aoife McGrath and Amy Ryan settled Tipperary and they were playing some good camogie but another mistake in the Tipp defence let in Corks Katrina Mackey who although well challenged by Tipps goalie Orla McInirey managed to hand pass into the net. Tipperary responded with points by Cait Devane and Nicole Walsh before Tipps Aoife McGrath goaled for Tipp to leave the halftime score Tipperary 1-05 Cork 2-07. Tipperary came out in the second half with renewed purpose and began to dominate the match with Tipps defence getting the upper hand on Corks forwards and with Cait Devane driving Tipperary on points from Nicole Walsh began to reel Cork in.Tipperary were in control of the match with Cork under severe pressure and only a fine save from the Cork goalie prevented Michaela Graham from scoring a goal, from the resulting 45 Nicole Walsh converted.Tipperary were well in control and were unlucky not to be in the lead as full time approached. After 60 minutes the teams were level but in injury time Cork converted only their second point of the half from a free from the Tipp puck out Tipperary were awarded a free up stepped Cait Devane and scored a great point from 65 metres to level the match.
Tipperary under new manager Eoin Kennedy have made huge progress but to get back to being serious contenders for title will take a lot of hard work, however this group of players are well up for it.
