The annual Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling and Camogie Finals took place in Semple Stadium Thurles over two days on Tuesday, 17th June and Wednesday, 18th June. Huge crowds turned up each day to witness all that we have come to love about our native games. For the second year in succession, the finals were played in temperatures in the high twenties. The state of hurling and camogie in our schools is definitely in a very healthy place based on what we were treated to over the two days. Thanks are due to Semple Stadium custodian David Hanley for the warm welcome he extended to all the schools and to Jimmy Purcell and Andy O’ Gorman for ensuring that everything ran smoothly. A special thank you is also due to our referees Christy McLoughlin, Fergal Horgan and John Bob Ryan plus our very capable Transition Year and Junior Cert students for their enthusiasm, initiative and drive over the two days. Special praise is also due to Cumann na mBunscol Secretary Aodán Wrenn, Treasurer Jerry McDonnell, Assistant PRO Paudie Fahey and Chairman Paddy Kelly for organising such a successful two days. The Cumann na mBunscol Officers were assisted greatly in coordinating and organising everything prior to and during the finals by GDA Officer Andy Ryan. Andy ensured that the digital scoreboard was in operation during the finals thus adding to the prestige of the occasion for our young players. Half time and full time score updates were tweeted from all twenty eight finals and we had a great response to the games on Twitter from people all over the world. Michael Trehy videoed all the games and we thank him for his cooperation throughout. We would also like to thank all the spectators who donated so generously to our ‘voluntary contribution bucket’ over the two days. We were astounded by the generosity and goodwill of people. This money will be of great assistance to us and will be used to promote our games. Most importantly, special praise should also be afforded to all the talented boys and girls who graced the hallowed turf in the cathedral of hurling over the two days. It must have been very difficult at times playing in such humid conditions. I would like to thank all the teachers and coaches of the teams for their co-operation preceding and during the finals. All fifty six team lists were submitted on time prior to the big days. Tipperary ALLIANZ Cumann na mBunscol are very fortunate to have some of the most dedicated and committed teachers around in our county. It was obvious the great source of pride the teachers take in leading their school teams out on final days. This enthusiasm is infectious and it is clear to see the positive way it impacts on the young boys and girls as they aspire to emulate the high standards of their heroes. The teachers and coaches are setting a terrific example for all our young boys and girls. Under 13 ‘B’ Hurling Scoil Mochaomhóg Naofa 8-05 – Holycross N.S. 1-0
On a warm Summer morning in the home of hurling in Thurles two teams arrived with a common goal, to take home the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Under 13 B title and thus kick off what was to be a great two days of hurling in the Premier County. Both teams were determined from the first whistle but it would be Owen Sheridan who drew first blood for Scoil Mochaomhóg Naofa and with a quick flick of his hurley he found the back of the Holycross net. Not ones to drop the head at this Holycross fought fierce. Ably supported by a superb goalie they managed to work the ball back up the field. However, a strong opposition backline awaited them and kept feeding the ball to Darren Flood who would go on to notch up 5-01 in the first half. Kevin Hayes would finish the first half for Sc. Mochaomhóg Naofa with a great solo run and strike over the bar. Holycross came out determined in the second half as was reflected in the scores Scoil Mochaomhóg had to so dearly fight for in the second half. Darren Flood would again prove to be a powerful force scoring two goals but was well contained by a strong Holycross backline for most of the second half. Jamie Lee Dwan and the remaining Holycross forwards worked hard to win the ball and keep their opposition under pressure. It would be Scoil Mochaomhóg’s day however with a final whistle signalling victory for Scoil Mochaomhóg Naofa and the end of a great opening game for the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol finals in Semple Stadium.

Under 11 ‘B’ Camogie Holycross 7-01 – Upperchurch 5-03
The second match to be played in the 2014 Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol County Finals would be the debut of the girls in the Under 11 B camogie decider, a game that was to live up to the high standards set down by the boys in the opening match of the 2014 season. Both teams were in the stadium early to settle pre-match nerves and soak up the atmosphere of the home of hurling. Brooke Slattery and Chloe Gleeson, supported by a strong forward line, would prove a lethal pair for the Upperchurch backs. Between them they would notch up a half-time score of 4-1 for their side. Upperchurch was quick to answer the challenge set down by these two ladies, however; with their own line of attack headed by another combination by the names Katie O’Dwyer and Méabh Brennan. The half time score was 4-01 to 2-02 in favour of Holycross. Upperchurch let their presence be known on the pitch when the second half ball was thrown in by referee Christie McLoughlin with Katie O’Dwyer finding the Holycross net after a great solo run and strike. Upperchurch spirits were high but Holycross had them in their sights with Sarah Woods answering the earlier score with a goal of her own. Sarah would go on to land another two past the Upperchurch keeper and widen a small gap between them and her team. Upperchurch’s Méabh Brennan worked hard to keep her side in the game with a late goal but it was to be Holycross’ day when the final whistle blew. A great display of camogie which bodes a bright future for the Premier County.

Match 3

Under 11 E-1 Hurling Golden 3-05 – Leugh 2:02
With the morning heating up and the atmosphere in the stadium following suit, Golden and Leugh teams emerged from the tunnel hungry to claim the U11 E-1 title for themselves. Golden tried to dominate events from the start but found it difficult to get through a very stong Leugh backline anchored in Michael Madden and goalie Rory McKevitt. Ben Currican notched up 3 points in total in the first half, all from frees such was the ferocity of the Leugh defenders. Leugh, failing despites some superb efforts, failed to notch up scores in the first half but were a changed team when they re-emerged after a half-time boost from mentors. Pádraig Collins got 2 points for Leugh in the early stages, one a beautifully placed 65 over the bar. David Wall kept Leugh spirits high with a well placed long ball that found the back of the Golden net. Golden answered Leugh’s challenge with a quick pass from Jason Morey to Éanna Ormond who landed it in the back of the Leugh net. Ben Currivan stepped up again with a penalty goal followed with an almost lightning succession point. Ben would go on to seal his side’s victory with a last minute goal from a great strike on the run. Leugh, not ones to back away when it got tough, fought on and continued to pressurise Golden all over the field. It was not to be their day however; as Golden lifted the shield after the final whistle, claiming the title for their delighted mentors and school.

Under 11 D Camogie Donaskeigh 9-08 – Leugh 3-01
Under a scorching sun Leugh and Donaskeigh teams emerged from the tunnel and took in the sights around them before taking position on the field for an epic game of camogie in the hopes of claiming the U11 D title for themselves, their mentors and their schools. Chloe Farrell would be the first to notch up a score for her side and set Donaskeigh on their long journey to lifting the shield. She was backed by a strong forward line that put enormous pressure on the Leugh backlines which, despite great efforts, conceded 5 goals in the first half each coming from the duo Chloe Farrell and Emma Horgan. Leugh fought back hard and kept a level head throughout but a determined Donaskeigh defence kept Leugh at bay for long periods of the game. Róisín Bambrick got her team on the scoreboard with an excellently struck free that sailed over the bar for Leugh. The second half showed no less determination and fight from both teams than the first with Leugh exploding onto the field ready to put the fight to Donaskeigh. Róisín Bambrick would lead the charge for her side, finding the back of the Donaskeigh net no less than three times in all to keep her side in the game. Caoimhe McCarthy goal from the hand kept the pressure on Leugh, and while Leugh goalie Claudia O’Brien blocked some magnificent shots, Chloe Farell found her mark 2 more times and scored goals from each. Emma Daly put over 3 points in quick succession to ensure her sides victory when the final whistle blew. Leugh fought hard to the end but it was to be Donaskeigh’s victory and an exciting journey home for them with the U11 D title in tow.

Under 11 A-1 Camogie Ballylooby ‘B’ 2-3 – Cashel GNS ‘B’ 2-3
Semple Stadium came to life as Ballylooby and Cashel players emerged from the tunnel to take scope of the field and one another and see who would be claiming the title of U11 A-1 champions in the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol county championships 2014. Cashel quickly set the pace for the match as they exploded into action on the referees whistle. Ciara Moloney, eagerly fed the ball by a strong forward line, sped towards the Ballylooby goals and landed the ball over the bar and place her team on the scoreboard. A strike from the left hand by Ciara would find the back of the Ballylooby net and electrify the crowd. Ballylooby weren’t slow to response to the challenge set out by Cashel and Shauna Morrissey placed a ball past the Cashel defence to score a magnificent goal and bring her team into the game. Ciara Moloney would prove a continuous threat to Ballylooby however; scoring another 2-01 from play in the first half. Ballylooby re-emerged in the second half a renewed team after a boost from mentors at half-time. Clara English placed 2 over the bar and after a speedy solo down the pitch, struck at pace to land a goal for Ballylooby. With only minutes left in the game it was clear this clash would come down to the wire as both teams dug deep to keep their teams in contention. Aisling Ryan scored a final point from the 65 line to level the score for Ballylooby. The final whistle signalled a draw with both teams earning the right to lift the title for their schools. The next battle between these two would be the coin-toss to see who gets the shield first!

Under 13 B Camogie Ballina 7:05 – Cashel 0:01
With the midday sun rising high in the sky, the stadium was heating up and under the stand of Semple Stadium the atmosphere in both dressing rooms was on fire as two teams prepared to face one another for the coveted title of U13 B champions. Ballina ladies quickly brought the challenge to Cashel with Jessica McCarthy Gilligan penetrating the Cashel backline and scoring 1-01 in quick succession for her side. Cashel was bombarded by Ballina early on but a strong defence led by goalie Grace O’Dwyer kept the Cashel side level-headed and in contention. A Laura McGrath free expertly placed over the bar would keep Cashel spirits high. A dominant forward line of Emma Flynn, Sarah Lane and Hazel McMahon would prove too much at times however; Ballina would lead at half-time 5-04 to 0-01. Cashel spirits didn’t drop and, bolstered by a team-talk at half time, would come back fighting in the second half. Ballina racked up the pressure again but would only find the target twice in the form of a goal apiece from Isabel Farnan and Sarah Lane. The Cashel backline stood strong. Eve Moloney and Maria O’Meara led the charge in an attempt to find the Ballina net but even with a tremendous display of camogie from the Cashel side; it was to be Ballina’s day. With the final whistle came Ballina’s victory and a roar from the Ballina supporters as their captain raised the U13 B shield for their side. Cashel were naturally disappointed but could keep their heads high after such a heroic display of camogie right up to the end.

Under 13 C Camogie Ardcroney 8-04 – Ballylooby 3-00
Under the heat of the midday sun, Ballylooby and Ardcroney teams emerged from the tunnel and set the stadium alight with excitement. At stake was the U13 C championship and both teams had a hunger for victory and to lift the shield. Ardcroney were quick to secure their first score on the board with a well-placed ball over the bar by Laura Shinners. Ballylooby tried to follow in kind by were denied by the excellent Ardcroney backline strongly supported by a solid goalie in Orla Molloy. Meaghen Morris and Laura Shinners would prove a lethal combination to the detriment of Ballylooby notching up 5-02 between them in the first half. A fantastic goal by Aisling Nevin for Ardcroney cemented their lead going into the second half. Ballylooby, after a side-line team talk with mentors, were a team revived and exploded onto the field in the second half. Two goals in quick succession by Hannah Berry and Sarah English encouraged Ballylooby to drive forward and take the fight to Ardcroney. The backline also experienced a rejuvenation with Róisín Flannery and Nadia Keating clearing the ball and denying Ardcroney forwards any success. Ciara Morrissey, following a lightning solo run up the field, placed the ball in the back of Ardcroney net to the delight of the Ballylooby side-line. Kayla Heffernan fought back hard for Ardcroney and her efforts were rewarded in the form of a goal. Two points from Laura Shinners would widen the gap between her team and Ballylooby. With the final whistle Ballylooby’s gallant efforts were in vain as Ardcroney claimed the title and lifted the shield for their school.

Under 11 A Hurling Templemore 2-07 – Carrick on Suir 1-06
As most school children around the country were returning from lunch, two teams in the dressing rooms of Semple Stadium still had a hunger in them; to claim the title of U11 A champions. Both teams had arrived early to shake off any pre-match nerves and entered the field of play calm and collect. As the whistle blew to commence the game however; this calm exterior was quickly replaced by a lightning pace of action. Both teams were quick to notch up initial points and set the pace for their opposition. It was clear they were evenly matched in spirit and skill and that this was to be a game that would go right down to the wire. A long range fortuitous goal from Ciarán McCormack for Templemore was the only thing to separate both teams as they went into the half-time. Danny Murphy led the charge for Carrick on Suir in the opening minute of the second half and the reward for his determination was a point for his side. Templemore were quick to respond however; Jack Nevin finding the back of the Carrick on Suir net with a strike from the ground. Jack would continue to mount pressure on Carrick on Suir with 4 points, being ably assisted by James Corcoran and Eoin Quinn. Templemore victory seemed assured but Carrick on Suir spirits never dropped and a late goal by Evan Foley saw them back in the game. It was not to be though as time had run out for Carrick on Suir and it would be the Templemore captain who would lift the shield and claim the title for his side.

Under 11 C Camogie Thomastown 10-09 – Scoil Eoin Naofa 1-02
The standard in the ladies competitions had, up to this point, been exceptional and the clash between Thomastown and Scoil Eoin Naofa would prove to be no different. Two teams emerged from the tunnel into the heat of the midday sun and exploded into action. Sonoita Wynn Doran put Scoil Eoin Naofa on the scoreboard with a highly accurate long range puck over the bar. This was quickly followed by points from Leonie Farell and Eimear Heffernan, both of whom scored on the run in quick succession. The Scoil Eoin Naofa goalie, Lauren Choppin, solidified the backline and put it up to the Thomastown forwards, however; it was not enough to stop the pace of Eimear Heffernan who racked up 4 goals in the first half. It would be Sonoita Wynn Doran again who would set Scoil Eoin Naofa on the offensive in the second half with a ball in the back of the Thomastown net. Lucy Fogarty and Kate Flannery answered the challenge for Thomastown with a goal apiece. The Scoil Eoin Naofa forwards battled hard but the Thomastown defence of Sinead Horan and Kate Flannery were too much for the Scoil Eoin Naofa side. A quick goal and point by Sinead Horan for Thomastown sealed the faith of an ever determined Scoil Eoin Naofa. Under 13 G Hurling Rossmore 11-08 – Rearcross 2-02
Rossmore and Rearcross entered an already electric stadium to battle for the title of U13 G champions and the coveted shield for their school. It was clear from the onset that neither team was going to concede without a fight and it was Jack Ryan-Casey who drew first blood for his side striking the ball into the back of the Rearcross net after a marvellous solo run down the field. Stephen Rochford was quick to reply for Rearcross landed his own goal after going through the Rossmore backline. Seán Malone would follow suit and notch up another score for Rearcross again finding the back of the net for his side. It would prove difficult for Rearcross to penetrate the Rossmore backline after this however; Patrick Ryan Lanty making a great save on the line to keep Rearcross at bay. Jack Ryan-Casey, with lethal accuracy, put over three points in succession and was supported by Dillon Maher and Cathal Ryan Redmond, who got goals apiece, to leave the half-time score very much in Rossmore’s favour, 6-08 to 2-00 to Rossmore. Rearcross, not ones to drop the head whatever the pressure, exploded onto the pitch in the second half, ready to take the fight to Rossmore once again. Niamh Sheldon and Eoin Sheldon accurately put 2 points over the crossbar to keep Rearcross spirits high but these were matched with goals by Dillon Maher, Danny Slattery and Dervla Heffernan to secure the faith of Rossmore as eventual champions. Rearcross fought to the final whistle with some great defending displayed by Colm Carey and Paul Nolan but it would be the Rossmore captain who would accept the gold medals and shield that accompanies the title of U13 G Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling champions.

U13 C Hurling: Carrig NS 4-06 Gaelscoil Durlas 3-04.
This Under 13 C Hurling Decider proved to be another pulsating contest between two very evenly matched teams. Both teams played a very intelligent brand of hurling and the standard of stick passing was very high. Carrig NS had an early goal from their Primary Game star Cian O’Farrell. When Éanna de Búrca doubled on a ball to the net for Gaelscoil Durlas it was “game on”. O’Farrell and the outstanding DJ McGrath added further scores for Carrig NS while Eimear NicCraith responded with a sublime finish to the Carrig NS net for Gaelscoil Durlas. At half time Gaelscoil Durlas led by the bare minimum. The second half started as the first half had finished with more excitement as Cian O’Farrell smashed the ball to the Gaelscoil Durlas net. James Tréanlámhach responded in kind for Gaelscoil Durlas. When Oisín Ó Briain added a further goal for Gaelscoil Durlas, it brought them to within two points of Carrig NS. Carrig NS would not be outdone however and their star performer Cian O’Farrell sealed victory with three impressive points on the trot. This game had everything you could wish for and supporters were on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The display of Cian O’Farrell will live long in the memory for all who were lucky enough to witness it. He was ably supported by his outstanding teammates.

U11 A Camogie: St. Mary’s Nenagh 6-02 Boherlahan 3-01.
This was an absorbing contest between two powerhouses of the camogie game. Both schools came into the finals full of confidence on the back of some great performances in recent final appearances. The first half was a tight affair with each team enjoying periods of dominance at different stages. A Sarah Hallinan goal for St. Mary’s Nenagh was cancelled out by a major from Boherlahan’s Cora O’Shea. This left the teams level at halftime. The second half was action packed as both schools threw off the shackles to produce some superb hurling. Sarah Hallinan and Kerina Hogan got Nenagh off to the perfect start but Boherlahan would not lie down and goals from Katie Sherlock and Lisa O’Conner kept them in touch. Nenagh had a steely determination to their play throughout this contest and three superb goals from Sarah Hallinan allied to some resolute defending from her teammates seized the day and with it the title for a superb Nenagh side. It’s no coincidence that the club game is in such good shape in Nenagh Éire Óg at juvenile camogie level when one sees the terrific work going on at school level in St. Mary’s Nenagh. Boherlahan were also a terrific side and these players will definitely feature in future county finals in the not too distant future.

Rosegreen NS produced a performance in this Under 11 D1 hurling decider that they could only have dreamed of prior to the big day. They were a very well drilled outfit and were superior on the day to a very gallant New Inn BNS side. New Inn BNS were hoping to give their soon to be departing Príomhoide Mr. Michael Heffernan the perfect retirement present but alas, it was not to be on this particular occasion. Rosegreen played with serious desire in the first half and goals from Joshua Kavanagh Keating and Gerard O’Dwyer left them in a very commanding position at the interval when they led by ten points. A Conor O’Dwyer Fitzgerald pointed free offered a brief hope of a revival for New Inn BNS but further goals from Joseph Davis, J.P. Anglim and Padraic Quinlan sealed an impressive victory for an excellent Rosegreen side. Cian O’Brien and Conor O’Dwyer Fitzgerald were standout performers for New Inn BNS while Gerard O’Dwyer produced a man of the match display for Rosegreen NS.

Under 13 D Annacarty NS 11-08 – Camogie Sacred Heart NS, Roscrea 4-02
The final game on day one of the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol county finals would prove to be as excellent a display of skill and determination as any game played during the day. The evening sun was cooling from the highs of earlier but the energy in the tunnel as both teams emerged was a hint as to what a game was in store for the on-looking supporters. Rachel O’Dwyer and Eva O’Dwyer would prove to be a dominating force on the field for Annacarty, Rachel soloing the length of the pitch and putting the ball past the Sacred Heart goalie with Eva close behind with another goal in quick succession. Sacred Heart girls were quick to reply and Claire Carey, ably supported by Leanna Marshall and Louise McCarthy, scored a super goal from a ground strike that the skilled Annacarty goalie Sarah Jane Furlong could do little about. Annacarty, not to drop off in pace, fought back hard and the duo of Rachel and Eva O’Dwyer returned, the girls working off one another well in pass-offs notching up a 3-06 score between them in the first half. Leah Heffernan would also form part of this attacking force and kick a determined goal into the Sacred Heart net. An Emma Kennedy goal before the half time whistle set the Sacred Heart alight and kept them in the game. Anacarty would prove a dominant force in the second half however; Leah Heffernan running through the Sacred Heart defence to find the Sacred Heart goal. Sacred Heart backline showed great determination with high balls won with such skill that one would be forgiven to forget this was a Primary schools competition. Niamh Geraghty, Emma Kennedy and Sharon Shanahan were determined to keep Annacarty at bay as best they could. Up from and Leanna Marshall would notch up another two goals for Sacred Heart. Gemma Fox would signal a certain Annacarty win in the last minutes running through twice to land a goal each time. Sacred Heart spirits didn’t drop for an instant but the Annacarty attack was to take the day for them. Annacarty would lift the shield and claim the title. A great end to what was a great day of hurling and camogie in Semple Stadium on day one of the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol county finals.

Under 13 E Hurling Templetuohy 7-07 – Corville NS 2-04
The morning sun was high in the sky as two teams stepped onto the pitch to kick-start day two of the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol county hurling finals in Semple Stadium. With the referee’s whistle and the roar of the crowd the match was underway and Dean Lawlor quickly put a point on the scoreboard for Templetuohy, setting the pace for the rest of the game. Lawlor quickly followed with another two points, little wonder why this man was chosen as a Primary Game hurler earlier in the year. Corville fought back fiercely working the ball down the field but came up against a strong Templetuohy backline in the guise of James Maher, Eanna Guilfoyle and Shane Lowe. Calin Byrne would notch up the first score for Corville in the form of a shot over the crossbar. This was answered in quick succession by Dean Lawlor, Eanna Guilfoyle and Kieran Larkin who proved deadly for Corville, scoring a goal apiece in the first half. Some magnificent saves by the Corville goalie Tré Loughnane, including a flick and solo run outfield, saved the Corville scoreline somewhat. Calin Byrne stepped up again for his side and with great courage found the back of the Templetuohy net from a free. The first half ended with another goal attempt from an attacking Corville which was expertly denied by the Templetuohy goalie Pádraig Gleeson. Templetuohy would have Corville under pressure going into the second half with a lead of 3-05 to 1-02 but Corville spirits didn’t falter and they re-emerged in the second half ready to bring the fight to Templetuohy. Calin Byrne again stepped up and was awarded with the first point of the second half, a free against Templetuohy. However the great pace of the Templetuohy backline kept Corville at bay for most of the second half, Shane Lowe, another Primary Game (Football) player from earlier in the season, showed his dual skill on the pitch and was a menacing foe for Corville forwards. Dean Lawlor would lead his side again and, ably supported by Kieran Larkin, found the back of the Corville net no less than four times. Dylan Horgan broke through the Templetuohy lines in the last minutes with a great solo down the field and a powerful strike past the Templetuohy goalie. This was quickly followed by a Gary Sheils point. Time was not on Corville’s side however; a Shane Lowe long strike over the bar for Templetuohy would be their last score, leaving Templetuohy just too far ahead at this stage for Corville to catch. With the final whistle it was to be Templetuohy who would claim the title of U13 E hurling county champions. A great game to start day two of what was sure to be an excellent display of hurling and camogie.

Under 13 E Camogie Thomastown 7-05 – Rearcross 2-01
After a spectacle of an opening game of day two in the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol county finals in Semple Stadium, it was the turn of the girls to show their camogie skills and fight it out for the U13 E title. Both teams had travels a distance to reach the stadium but were turned out bright and early for their impending clash. Thomastown exploded into action lead by a powerful point over the bar by Eimear Heffernan who set her team on their long journey in search of victory. Rearcross was defended well with Rhianna Ryan in goals, supported by a strong backline of Niamh Sheldon and Gabrielle Steed. The offense of Thomastown were equally as strong and up to any challenge Rearcross might impose. Jennifer Fogarty and Molly Keane fed the ball to Eimear Heffernan with lightning pace. Eimear would go on to score 4-04 in the first half, her last point an accurately place point over the Rearcross crossbar from over her shoulder. The skill on both sides was a pleasure to witness. Testament to the tireless work of the Thomastown backline of Leonie Farrell and Kate Flannery and the highly skilled goalie, Jane McLaughlin, Rearcross found it hard to reach the goal line. Leonie Farell stepped up to the mark for Thomastown with a strike of the ball into the Rearcross net after a great solo run. It would see her side lead the game opening the second half. Rearcross fought back fiercely and kept the attacking Thomastown under wraps. Eimear Heffernan again broke through for Thomastown scoring 2-01.Niamh Sheldon, supported by Aisling Deegan and Sophia McMahon notched up 2-01 and showing great command of the ball, striking each on the run to find her target. It was not to be for Rearcross however; Thomastown’s lead would prove too great for them. Thomastown captain lifted the shield for their side. A title for Thomastown but the respect of Semple Stadium for all involved in a magnificent display of camogie.

Under 11 C Hurling Carrig NS, Nenagh 7-10 – Thomastown 2-05
The sun was rising in the sky and the stadium was alive from an exciting previous game when two teams emerged from the tunnel, each ready to give their all to lift the coveted U11 C shield and claim the title of county champions for themselves and their schools. DJ McGrath was a dominant force from the onset for Carrig NS setting the pace for his side and landing an unbelievable strike into the back of the Thomastown net. Thomastown backline including Rebecca Farrell, Callum McCarthy and Thomas Fogarty showed their skill and determination in trying to outpace the Carrig forwards and keep them at bay. DJ McGrath, assisted by Darragh Tucker and Davy O’Brien, relentlessly advanced on the Thomastown goal line with DJ finding the back of the net no less than four times in the first half. Dominik O’Dwyer led the Thomastown side and keep them in the game getting his first point for his side from an incredibly tight angle and putting up a score of 0-4 in total for Thomastown in the first half. A Bill Cleary ball in the bottom corner of the Thomastown net followed by successive points from DJ McGrath and Josh Keller would see Carrig NS take the lead going into the second half but an embattled Thomastown were never going to go down without a fight. Thomastown emerged at the second half rejuvenated and ready to take the fight to Carrig NS. Dominic O’Dwyer landing 2-01 for his side, one goal a superb puck from the ground and past the Carrig keeper. The Thomastown backline heaped the pressure on the ever advancing Carrig Forwards and managed to keep their scoreline sound for the most part. A well placed shot over the crossbar by Bill Cleary, Ben West and Darragh Tucker in rapid succession kept Carrig on top in the last minutes of the game. It was to be Carrig NS’ day as the last seconds of the game faded away. A great fight by Thomastown right to the end. The final score would favour Carrig who would lift the shield and claim victory.

Under 11 D Hurling Barnane 7-12 – New Inn 4-04
Both teams arrived early to Semple Stadium to soak in the atmosphere of what was to come. Each panel of mentors had one aim for their players, to be crown U11 D county champions and win glory for themselves and their schools. New Inn and Barnane exploded onto the field, ready for an immense battle. From the onset it seemed both teams were evenly matched and that this game would go down to the last seconds. Tom Downey would surge forward and land a point over the Barnane crossbar to put his side on the scoreboard. This would be answered in kind by Barnane with a goal from a free by Paudie Kinane. The pressure was to be heaped onto New Inn from then on with Tony Cahill scoring three points I na row for his side and edging Barnane ahead of their opposition. Jason O’Gorman, backed by Adam Gallagher and Kevin Keating, kept New Inn in contention landing a strike from the ground past the Barnane keeper to the roars of delight of the New Inn sideline. Barnane. Not ones to let a small setback get to them, stepped up to the mark with Jack Ryan off the left with a point over the bar. This show of sheer skill urged on Jason O’Gorman and Tony Cahill to take their chances and they were rewarded with a goal apiece just before the half-time whistle. New Inn, although behind coming into the second half, emerged renewed. Kevin Cleary managed a difficult shot off the left to find the back of the Barnane net. Joseph Bourke and Jimmy Mullane quickly closed off New Inn from finding anymore scores while Paudie Kinane worked to widen the lead Barnane had worked so hard to create. Paudie would manage a further 1-02 for Barnane. A late goal by Darren Hough for New Inn kept them focused on their original aim but time was against New Inn as they tried to make their comeback. With the final whistle it was Banana’s day. A game of great skill and determination from both sides. The Barnane captain would note his worthy opposition in his acceptance speech.

Under 13 F Camogie Kilbarron 8-06 – Kilkeary 5-01
With the heat of the midday sun looming overhead, Kilkeary and Kilbarron entered the stadium grounds with a great calm about them. This calm was to be shattered however; the starting whistles fired up these two teams for what was to be an excellent display of camogie skill and prowess. Rachel Hannigan was the first to draw blood, landing a goal past the Kilkeary goalie following a superb solo run. Mary O’Brien responded in kind with a run through which was finished by a puck on the ground and into the back of the Kilbarron net. It looked to be a fast pace but well matched game that would have spectators on the edge of their seats. Kilbarron regrouped and a Sarah Leenane goal followed by another from Thyra Burke saw them edge ahead but a determined Kilkeary team weren’t far behind. Megan Dunne surged up the field with an athletic pace about her, her reward was finding the back of the Kilbarron net. She would soon finish another run with an expertly put point over her shoulder and the Kilbarron crossbar. Laura Lenehan fought hard to keep Kilbarron in the game, scoring 0-4 for her side in the first half. A long shot from Áine Slattery was the goal needed by Kilbarron to cement their lead ahead of Kilkeary going into the second half. Thyra Burke would use Kilbarron’s momentum and chip a ball past the Kilkeary goalie while Sarah Lenahan found the top corner with her attempt. Kilkeary were by no means out for the count and Niamh O’Brien striking a ball on the ground for a goal. Megan Dunne returned for Kilkeary and with two long shots in she was rewarded with two goals. It wasn’t enough to upset Kilbarron however; and a shot struck by Áine Slattery with the power and accuracy of a senior inter-county player was a sure sign of the faith of Kilkeary. Kilbarron pulled away for a final time. They would go on to lift the U13 F camogie shield in the blistering heat of the afternoon sun in Semple Stadium.

Under 11 E Hurling Moneygall 3-08 – Lisronagh 1-14
With the midday sun sweltering overhead, both teams emerged from the tunnel determined for victory. The tension before the throw-in was palpable not only in the players on field but on the side-lines of both camps as the title and glory loomed in the minds of all. Seán Kenneally, with a long strike from his hand, placed the ball over the Lisronagh crossbar and put his team on the scoreboard. Peter McGarry responded without delay landing two points over the Moneygall bar, one from a free. It was clear there was very little between both teams determination on the field and skill with a hurley. Rory Collins from Lisronagh struck over his shoulder and the crossbar to put his team in the lead but it was to be brief as Cathal Greene would place 3 over for his side and keep Moneygall in contention. Peter McGarry, ably supported by Rory Collins (who managed 0-1 himself), Dáire Luttrell and Dean English, notched up 0-8 from frees and play to edge Lisronagh into the lead at the half time whistle. Moneygall, refreshed and with a sideline boost from mentors, came back ready to put the fight to Lisronagh and close the narrow gap between them. Cathal Greene and Sean Kenneally, supported by a strong midfield in Sean Moroney and David Toohey, proved to be a lethal combination for Lisronagh scoring 3-03 in the second half to bring Moneygall back in line with and even surpassing Lisronagh. Peter McGarry and the forward line again stepped up for Lisronagh and a Dáire Luttrell goal followed by a Dean English point in the last seconds left it level all. With the final whistle it was to be a draw with both captains accepting the title on behalf of their schools. The coin toss would decide who gets the shield for the first half of the next 12 months.

Under 11 A-1 Hurling Carrick on Suir 6-04 – Scoil Ailbhe 0-03

It was to be the battle of the Christian Brothers schools that took place at midday on the second day of the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol county finals in Semple Stadium. Carrick on Suir would place the first score on the board with an accurately taken 65 by Nathan Booth, who would quickly follow this up with another point from play. Scoil Ailbhe may have been taken by surprise but they showed great determination in battling Carrick on Suir back and taking the fight to them. Peter Aleshinloye, Scoil Ailbhe goalie, showed some magnificent block downs on the goal line that had Scoil Ailbhe supporter’s hearts in their mouths. He was ably assisted by James Hayden and Blake Walsh in the backline. Much to the efforts of these men however; Ryan Nolan and Kyle Quinn found the back of the net in quick succession each scoring for Carrick on Suir and going on to notch up 3-01 between them from play. Scoil Ailbhe spirits were kept high by a late point but Carrick on Suir had a commanding lead going into the second half. Scoil Ailbhe efforts were no less determined in the second half but the Carrick goal line was skilfully defended by goalie Michael O’Donovan and backline Danny Prout and Callum Lanigan. Kyle Quinn and Nathan Booth would each find the back of the Scoil Ailbhe net and advance the gap between themselves and Scoil Ailbhe. Cian Forrestal put up two points from frees to lift Scoil Ailbhe spirits but a great deflection off Jack Hickey gave Danny Prout a goal opportunity and Carrick on Suir a commanding lead that a tireless Scoil Ailbhe just couldn’t keep up to. Carrick on Suir victory was signalled by the final whistle. Great credit is due to Scoil Ailbhe for a great display of effort and resilience as was noted by the gracious speech of the Carrick captain as they lifted the U11 A-1 shield in victory.

U13 D Hurling Knockavilla 2-11 Borrisoleigh BNS 3-04 (After Extra Time).
This U13 D hurling decider between two giants of the game served up what was arguably the game of the finals. This match was played at a time of the day when the temperature was close to 28 degrees. The children on both sides are to be seriously commended for the energy and commitment they exhibited from start to finish. Playing extra time in such sweltering conditions must have taken its toll on these young players but you would never have guessed it such was the quality of performances on show. Devon Ryan gave Knockavilla the perfect start with a well taken goal. Alvis Danko responded with a pointed free for Borrisoleigh. When Pauraic Stapleton unleashed a rocket to the Knockavilla net, the Borrisoleigh players suddenly began to grow in confidence. Knockavilla responded well to this setback with points from Barry McCarthy and Joe Fitzgerald. As halftime approached rising North Tipp Peadar Cummins star Alvis Danko crashed the ball to the Knockavilla net off his left hand side. Borrisoleigh led by two points at the interval. The second half was end to end with both sides throwing the kitchen sink at it! Lorcan Carr and Devon Ryan struck sweet points for Knockavilla with that man Alvis Danko keeping Borrisoleigh in touch with a terrific goal from a penalty. With the sides level at the end of normal time, it was decided to play six minutes of extra time. Each team maintained the frenetic pace set during normal time. Ultimately scores from Barry McCarthy (1-01) and Seamus Heffernan sealed Borrisoleigh’s fate. Kevin Maher and Alvis Danko from Borrisoleigh plus Lorcan Carr and Devon Ryan from Knockavilla are definitely players to look out for in the future. This was a thrilling spectacle that showcased all the wonderful things about our game. The Knockavilla team contained many of the players who brought a County Under 12 A hurling title to the parish in 2013. Borrisoleigh lost nothing in defeat and were very dignified after what must have been a heartbreaking defeat.

U13 H Hurling Skeheenarinky NS 10-11 Aglish 3-07
In a high scoring Under 13 H decider Skeheenarinky NS proved much too strong for a tenacious and determined Aglish outfit. Skeheenarinky led from the start and built up a substantial lead after a few minutes. Aglish, to their credit, never threw in the towel and battled gamely to the bitter end. Their coach Liam O’Gara has obviously instilled great values in his players and this was to the fore throughout the contest. Skeheenarinky Principal Catherine Doyle must have been very proud of her players as they dominated this contest from the beginning. Jack Murphy, Darragh Brennan and Dean Finn all scored superb goals in a first half which saw Skeheenarinky into an unassailable lead of 7-07 to 0-03 at the halftime interval. Aglish emerged for the second half with a steely determination in their eyes. Goals from Louise Torpey and Conor Ryan offered brief hope of a revival. It was at this juncture that Skeheenarinky NS really showed their class and goals from Mary Barrett and Darragh Brennan put the gloss on a superb team performance. Oisín Brennan of Skeheenarinky NS and Conor Ryan Aglish received the Player of the Match awards and will no doubt be seen in the blue and gold of Tipperary in the very near future. Skeheenarinky NS were full value for the victory and gave one of the most complete team performances witnessed at this year’s finals.

This enthralling spectacle will long be remembered for the high standard of point scoring on display throughout. Eoghan Lonergan of Tipp CBS and Oisín Ó Briain of Gaelscoil Durlas traded early points. Every ball was keenly contested during a frenetic opening half. A Patrick O’Donnell flicked goal was the pick of the Tipperary CBS scores in the opening half. James Tréanlámhach scored at will in the first half for Gaelscoil Durlas and would emerge as one of the most influential players as the game progressed. The accuracy and first touch of both teams in the second half had spectators glued to their seats. Nevertheless, Gaelscoil Durlas were not going to relinquish their supremacy and finished the match strongly with some exceptional scores from Urban Ó Nualláin, Darragh Stáicliúm and that man James Tréanlámhach to seal an impressive victory for one of Tipperary Cumann na mBunscol’s most consistent school teams. Darragh Stáicliúm of Gaelscoil Durlas and Michael Lowry of Tipperary CBS received the Player of the Match awards but were ably assisted by their exceptional teammates. This was as a good a game of hurling as one is ever likely to see at Under 11 hurling and was a credit to all those involved.

U11 C1 Hurling Gaelscoil Clonmel 8-04 Borrisoleigh BNS 11-04

Borrisoleigh and Gaelscoil Clonmel served up the proverbial humdinger in this U11 C1 Hurling decider. It was clear from the outset that both teams were very intent on going for goal. First half goals from Gaelscoil Clonmel’s Tristan Grant, Ronan MacGiolla Phóil and Peader Céitinn plus majors from Borrisoleigh’s Colm Boyle and Paddy McCormack reinforced this. Paddy McCormack caused consternation in the Gaelscoil Clonmel defence every time he got on the ball. His kicked goal showcased the vast array of skills he has in his locker. Nevertheless, Gaelscoil Clonmel weathered the storm and led at the break by 5-2 to 4-01. Paddy McCormack continued to sparkle for Borrisoleigh in the second half and continued to score at will. On the Gaelscoil Clonmel side, a Lennon Ó Fuaráin goal was the pick of their scores. Borrisoleigh did not give an inch in the closing stages and Mr. Small’s charges were determined to make up for the disappointment of losing out in the Under 13 decider earlier in the day. A composed finish allied to some superb goals from man of the match Paddy McCormack ultimately was enough to get them over the line. This was a cracking contest that had supporters on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

U13 F Hurling Annacarty NS 4-04 Lorrha/Redwood 3-05

This was easily one of the most fiercely contested battles we witnessed over the two days. Sport can be very cruel at times and it was a pity that anybody had to lose out on this particular occasion. Colm Fogarty and Mikie Houlihan scored spectacular goals for Lorrha while Stephan McDonald responded with a sublime effort for Anacarty NS. Lorrha/Redwood led by three points at the interval. The character of this fine Annacarty side really showed up in the second half with goals from David Fox, Paudie Bradshaw and Cian Mooney proving very important. A Colm Fogarty goal for Lorrha/Redwood was a goal worthy of any occasion. It seemed fitting that he reserved it for the Cathedral of Hurling in Semple Stadium. Lorrha/Redwood were naturally bitterly disappointed at the final whistle but I have no doubt we will see them back in the finals in the coming years. Annacarty NS are a side who arrive in Semple Stadium full of confidence as they have been frequent visitors to the stadium at finals time in recent years. They play with total freedom and it was this quality more than anything that proved enough to see them home in what was an absorbing contest from start to finish.

U13 A Camogie: Boherlahan 4-06 St. Mary’s Nenagh 1-01

Boherlahan proved much too strong for a gallant Nenagh side in our penultimate game of the finals. Nenagh battled heroically to the bitter end and displayed all the terrific characteristics we would associate with such a proud camogie school. However, on this occasion they were outclassed by a classy Boherlahan outfit. Ciara Dwan and Ellie Ryan ran the show for Boherlahan in the first half. A wonderfully struck ground shot to the Boherlahan net offered Nenagh brief respite but a Clare Canny goal saw Boherlahan lead by 3-03 to 1-0 at the break. The second half saw Boherlahan reinforce their dominance. The double act of Ellie Ryan and Ciara Dwan continued to torment the Nenagh defence. Ellie Ryan’s point off her left hand side as the match reached its conclusion was a score good enough to grace any occasion. It was no surprise that she shared the Player of the match award with Nenagh’s Siobhan Collins. This Nenagh team will definitely emerge stronger from this experience while the future looks very bright for Boherlahan camogie with such a crop of talented players at their disposal.

St. Mary’s Clonmel and Cashel BNS served up thrilling spectacle in what was an eagerly anticipated final. The sleeping giant Cashel BNS were hoping to overcome slight favourites St. Mary’s Clonmel. The teams traded early scores through Jake Cotter (Cashel) and Seán O’Connor (St. Mary’s). A Tommy Fitzgerald strike from a tight angle for Cashel BNS was the pick of the scores in the opening half. Further scores from Conor Parker and Enda Dunphy saw St. Mary’s lead by 0-04 to 0-02 at the interval. A goal was always likely to prove crucial in such a keenly contested battle and when the outstanding St. Mary’s captain Enda Dunphy crashed the ball to the Cashel net, one got the feeling that it might just be Cashel’s day. Cashel refused to give in though and points from Jack McGrath (3), and Conor O’Dwyer kept them in contention. Like all good teams however, St. Mary’s seized the initiative once more and goals from Ryan Power (an absolute cracker) and Dean Cagney sealed a comprehensive victory. Cashel BNS will be naturally devastated but I have no doubt we will see them on the winner’s podium in an U13 A decider in the not too distant future. Under the leadership and tutelage of Principal Will Ryan and all their fine coaches the game has undergone an amazing transformation in the school. St. Mary’s performed with great determination and poise throughout and their superior composure in the final ten minutes was instrumental to their ultimate success. Their coach Emmet Leahy is a great hurling man and he was ably supported in the preparation of the team by Paul Curran and Jimmy Ryan. Nevertheless, these finals are really all about the young players who showcase all that is wonderful about our native games. In Enda Dunphy, St. Mary’s had one such player. His class and composure in the pressure cooker of an Under 13 A decider was crucial in securing a historic title for St. Mary’s. On the losing side Tomás Bourke gave a man of the match display for Cashel BNS. This was a really sporting encounter that espouses all of the values we hold dear in the Gaelic Athletic association. I’m already looking forward to next year’s finals.
