Last Saturday in Dolla under some sunshine the scene was set for the finals of both our U14 Hurling B & C grades. Full credit has to be accorded to all involved in the Silvermines club as they had everything in top shape.
The action commenced with the C final between south champions Fethard and west champions Eire Og Annacarty Donohill when referee Ciaran Timmons got proceedings off @ 12.30pm. The south side got the first opportunity inside the opening minute but it tailed off target. By the third minute Michael Quinlan narrowly missed firing over the opening point for Fethard. Both himself Ciarian Moroney alongside captain Ryan Walsh were posing real pressure upon the west defense. On the fourth minute, captain Ryan Walsh pointed a Fethard free and from the resulting puckout, Robert Hackett gained possession and had the Annacarty net rattled. Another pointed free by Ryan Walsh had Fethard 1-2 to the good and he followed up with a cracker of a line cut to the net to put Fethard 2-2. The Fethard machine was now on full throttle as points came from Matthew Burke and Michael Quinlan. A great pass from Shane Neville to captain Walsh secured another Fethard point to put them 2-5 ahead with only twelve minutes registered on the clock.
Things were being very difficult for Annacarty as they could not get any supply beyond midfield. Derek Connors, Paudie Bradshaw, Cian Ryan were trying tirelessly to no avail. Michael Quinlan had Fethard’s third goal accompanied with a point inside a minute. Ryan Walsh pointed again and this was accompanied with another pointed free by Michael Quinlan for a Fethard score of 3-8. As the contest entered the closing five minutes of the half, midfielder Darragh Hurley added two points to put Fethard 3-10 to no score. Then an Annacarty attack by Derek Connors got blocked, however Paudie Bradshaw’s vigilance paid off as his effort went over the crossbar for a west point. As the closing seconds approached Michael Quinlan had his second goal to put Fethard @ 4-10 to 0-1.
It was a very disappointing time for the west men knowing that the game was over as a contest while still another half to complete. In the second period Fethard could afford to be totally defensive and only conceded two points while adding another eight to their tally. The Annacarty scores came from Derek Connors and a pointed free by Paudie Bradshaw. Cian Ryan, Kyle Quinn, Darragh O’Brien never gave up despite the constant pressure endured. The Fethard additions were as follows – Robert Hackett two points, while Cathal Ryan, Darragh Hurley, Ciarian Moroney, Cathal O’Mahony, Ryan Walsh and Matthew Burke added one each to assist Fethard on bridging a three year to accompany the last title in 2013 on a concluding score reading Fethard 4-18 Eire Og Annacarty Donohill 0-3.
Chairman Tom Dawson in his presentation address complemented the west champions for the spirit they played the game despite coming up against a very formidable side in Fethard. He thanked the host club, the referee Ciaran Timmons and his full team of officals. He thanked Tipperary Coop and their representative Kieran Maguire for sponsoring our championships and congratulated a very strong Fethard team as he presented the Jacksie Ryan Cup to Fethard captain Ryan Walsh.

The next game was the B contest with mid champions Boherlahan Dualla against north champions Lorrha Rovers Gaels. Referee John Ryan (Bob) got the action underway @ 2pm with the Boherlahan defense put to test as their captain Tomas Burke cleared his line. Michael Tierney and Michael Houilhan were busy for the north side. The opening point came for Boherlahan on the sixth minute. Three minutes later Colm Fogarty pointed for Lorrha and converted a free to put Lorrha one point up. The north side were now being more purposeful in their approach and after a good passage of play Michael Houilhan put Dan Needham in place for the opening goal for a 1-2 to 0-1 scoreline. Sean Kavanagh was unfortunate to see his two attempts go off target but on the sixteenth minute he had a pointed free for Boherlahan to reduce the difference to a goal. Lorrha missed out on chances by Kieran Clarke and Michael Tierney. As the last five minutes of play remained Ben Fogarty laid on a ball to Colm Fogarty for another Lorrha point. On the twenty fourth minute Michael Tierney made no mistake as his effort sailed over the wood work for the last point of the opening period for a fourth Lorrha point and put the interval score Lorrha Rovers Gaels 1-4 Boherlahan Dualla 0-2.
Upon the resumption the north combination side held the tempo and never appeared to be in trouble. The first opportunity came in the second minute as Michael Houilhan pointed for Lorrha. A long puckout into the Lorrha defense set up a Boherlahan attack and from a resulting free gave the mid side an opportunity which failed to go the intended route. Kevin Cahalan, Colm Fogarty, Tom Duggan, Adam Clancy and Daniel Madden were putting in huge effort for the north men. While the mid side were being ably assisted by the efforts of Ned Ryan, Tomas Burke, Sean Kavanagh, Michael Tierney to mention but a few. On the seventh minute Colm Fogarty pointed another Lorrha free and moments later decided to strike a penalty opportunity over the woodwork for a Lorrha tally of 1-7. When Boherlahan attacked, Tom Duggan in tandem with Adam Clancy came to the rescue. Captain James Guinan was solid in defense for Lorrha all through the contest. Michael Tierney added three points for Lorrha to put them 1-10 to 0-2 with two minutes remaining. Despite many attempts by Boherlahan they could not penetrate the north defense and were unlucky to see two ’65s falling short. As the final whistle was to sound Sean Kavanagh struck the Lorrha net for the concluding score of the game with the north side securing the title on a final score reading Lorrha Rovers Gaels 1-10 Boherlahan Dualla 1-2.
Chairman Tom Dawson was full of praise for the display and determination of both teams. He commiserated with the mid champions on their defeat to a very strong Lorrha side. He once again acknowledged the Silvermines club for the pitch. He thanked the referee John Ryan (Bob) and his officials. He thanked Kieran Maguire representing our sponsors Tipperary Coop, before presenting the cup to victorious Lorrha Rovers Gaels captain James Guinan.
