Last weekend we were back to our internal action as all our visiting teams have bade all their fair wells as the Féile festival had concluded.
On Saturday last we had one football final down for reckoning with the U 14 C taking place in Holycross a change from the advertised venue of The Ragg, between mid champions Moyne Templetuohy and west victors Eire Og Annacarty Donohill. Referee Pat O’Mahony got proceedings off @ 4.05pm. The mid side laid an onslaught immediately with James Maher laying the ball off to captain Dylan McLoughlin for the opening goal of the contest after two minutes. From the resulting kick out Jamie Kiely was on song as he had the west net rattled for goal number two all inside three minutes of the game. It was a heartbreaking experience for the west team / followers. Kiely added a point on the fourth minute to give Moyne a 2-01 lead. During the next three minutes it was the west men that were in attack but their goal opportunity went wide. Their next was aborted after a great save from keeper Patrick Collier. Jimmie Gleeson, Aaron McLoughlin and James Maher even though in defence for Moyne were a thorn in the sides for the Anacarty defence outfit. In order to stem the Moyne avalanche the Annacarty mentors moved two extra players into their defence which managed to curtail the threat on the goal area. On the seventh minute another point from captain Dylan McLoughlin quickly followed by another from Jamie Kiely to put Moyne at 2-04. However it was obviously evident that the west side with their depleted front line was under strength which yielded with attacks on the Moyne goal very much weakened.
The west became awake as Derek Connors had the Moyne net shaking for Annacarty Donohill first score with a cracking goal. Darragh O’Brien was central to every attack for the west men. On the twenty second minute a second west goal seemed to be on the cards but to their disappointment the bounced off the crossbar. Derek Connors pointed for Eire Og moments later to put the score at Moyne Templetuohy 2-04 Annacarty Donohill 1-01. With the opening period gone into added time Moyne captain Dylan McLoughlin managed to pierce the west defence and had his second goal. It was to prove to be a turning point of the contest for Annacarty never got to grips with such a defecit. Cian Lloyd, Enda Ryan were serving the cause well for the mid side while Daniel Kelly, Cian Ryan, Colin Heffernan were doing their utmost for the west cause.
Upon the resumption it was Annacarty that were first on the scoring with a point from Darragh Kelly after three minutes. Five minutes later Derek Connors had goal number two for the west team and with the scoreboard reading 3-04 to 2-02 the Annacarty men had reduced the deficit to five points. Even though the Moyne men had made several raids which yield a couple of 45s they were held scoreless. One could sense some optimum with the west contingent. However as true champions do, the Moyne men did not falter on the job in hand when marksman Éanna Guilfoyle pointed three frees to put the score at 3-07 to 2-02. On the twenty third minute another pointed free for Moyne. Annacarty went on a final attack which yielded a penalty which Derek Connors kicked superbly for his third goal. Seconds later his got the last point of the contest as the time was up. Moyne Templetuohy were champions on a final score reading 3-08 to 3-03.
It was a contest that was eagerly fought by two committed sides but from a neutral perspective it was always evident as to the victors were going to be. The mid side had the strength in all vital areas and produced more football skill to match. Full credit to the west men for never faltering in the workmate and commitment. Chairman Tom Dawson complemented both sides for the performance. He acknowledged the referee Pat O’Mahony and his officials for a job well done. He thanked Holycross for making their facilities available at short notice and then presented the trophy to Moyne Templetuohy victorious captain Dylan McLoughlin.

The County U16 Pock Fáda was held on Saturday last in the beautiful surrounds of Bike Park Ireland in Knockshegowna by the kind permission of Graham & Sandy Kenny. Proceedings commenced at 11am on the 1.5km course with the four divisional participants. The course brought the participants up Knockshegowna hill, past the Cross of Pike, and back down to the finish line. The natural contours and obstacles of the course challenged both the puking strength of the participants but also their tactical skills. Parents and supporters were able to follow all the action in the spectator friendly venue. Well done to the winner Gearóid O’Connor (Moyne Templetuohy) and indeed all the participants. Great thanks to the Kenny Family in Bike Park Ireland for providing such a fantastic venue.
