Cathal was born on July 21st, 1993 and plays for the Holycross-Ballycahill club. Cathal played Minor Hurling with Tipperary in 2010 and 2011 and was on the Tipperary Under 21 Hurling panel from 2012 through to 2014. Cathal made his competitive debut with the Tipperary Senior Hurlers in January 2014 when he lined out at right corner-back versus the Limerick Institute of Technology in the Waterford Crystal Cup. Cathal won a Waterford Crystal Cup medal with Tipperary in 2014, lining out at right corner-back in the defeat of Clare in the final. Cathal won Munster Senior Hurling medals in 2015 and 2016 and All-Ireland Senior Hurling medals in 2016 and 2019 at right corner-back. Cathal made his National League debut at right-corner-back versus Waterford in February 2014. Cathal made his Championship debut at right corner-back versus Limerick in the 2014 Munster Championship. Cathal was nominated for an All-Star award in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019, winning an All-Star at right corner-back in 2016 and left corner back in 2019. Cathal was named as the 2014 Young Hurler of the Year. Cathal was named the RTE man of the match following his performance versus Limerick in the 2016 Munster Semi-Final.
