Limerick reach Munster Under-21 final after repelling Tipperary comeback
Limerick 3-16 Tipperary 3-14
Report from RTE.ie
Limerick maintained their composure to record a thrilling 3-16 to 3-14 victory over Tipperary in the semi-finals of the Bord Gáis Energy Munster Under-21 Championship at the Gaelic Grounds.
John Kiely’s team led by 12 points in the first half before Tipperary embarked on a stirring revival which saw them draw level with five minutes left. But with Limerick substitute Colin Ryan effective in the closing stages, Limerick set up a 30 July Provincial decider with Clare.
Only 14 seconds had elapsed when Limerick grabbed a delightful goal courtesy of Cian Lynch’s sweet strike. Pat Ryan burst through the heart of the Tipperary defence before slipping a clever pass to Lynch, who found the back of the net. Tom Morrissey was unfortunate not to add a second Limerick goal after only 90 seconds as midfielders Darragh O’Donovan and Ryan Limerick completely dominated the opening period.
With Cian Lynch and David Dempsey especially prominent in attack, Limerick led by 1-07 to 0-02 after 22 minutes. Then a splendid move finished with Limerick rattling the Tipperary net again in the 23rd minute as Robbie Hanley provided a crisp finish.
Ryan drilled over a fine point from distance as Limerick went 12 points clear before Tipp responded with an enterprising burst. Two Colin O’Riordan goals were sandwiched either side of a Stephen Cahill point as Tipp narrowed the gap to five. In the remaining minutes of the opening period O’Donovan and John McGrath traded points as Limerick departed with a 2-09 to 2-04 interval advantage.
After the restart, Tipp hit four of the next five points to move within two points of Limerick, who subsequently had Barry O’Connell sent off for a second bookable offence for a foul on substitute Jack Shelley. Limerick pilfered a third goal in the 45th minute when Tom Morrissey reacted smartly to score following a Paul Maher save from Colin Ryan.
But Tipp were back on level terms in the 51st minute as Tadhg Gallagher drilled a great goal from an acute angle. Substitute Jack Kelliher made an instant impact, scoring a point for Limerick before a Colin Ryan free and Limerick held out as Tipp’s Michael Breen was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for a foul on Lynch in stoppage time.
