This week it was the turn of the U14B hurling championship to take centre stage with the final held in Templetuohy last Sunday morning between host club Moyne-Templetuohy and Drom-Inch with victory going the way of the home team, see report below. We congratulate Moyne-Templetuohy and wish them every success in their county semi-final. That wrapped up affairs at divisional level in the U14 championships and as we look forward to the county semi-finals, we hope Moycarkey-Borris and Moyne-Templetuohy can emulate their success in the Féile na nGael earlier in the season and go all the way in the county championships. Joining them also at county semi-final stage is Moycarkey-Borris’ second team who will represent the division in the “C” championship, so best wishes to both clubs for Saturday, September 6th.
Next Monday the final of the Eamon Darmody Sports Turf Care U16C hurling takes place in The Ragg between Durlas Óg and Upperchurch-Drombane as the first of the U16 finals throws in. While the semi-finals in U16A and B took place on Monday night with Durlas Óg and Holycross-Ballycahill both emerging to meet in the “A” final, while the “B” final will be contested between Clonakenny and Loughmore-Castleiney, these finals are penciled in for Saturday, September 13th, in Drombane.
Last week the U13 shield commenced with some very lively fixtures and excitement and Thursday night’s games promise to be as competitive.
We extend to all players and mentors representing the Mid on the various county panels in action this weekend every best wish, be it in the Tony Forristal U14A Sonny Walsh U14B, Carraigdhoun U15 or Tipperary Supporters U16A & B tournaments and hope that the County teams are successful on all levels.
Stakelum’s Office Supplies U14B Mid Hurling Final
Moyne-Templetuohy 2-10 Drom-Inch 0-02
Playing on home turf Moyne-Templetouhy claimed the Stakelum’s Office Supplies U14B crown after their victory over Drom-Inch in the final last Sunday morning. In a game that never really ignited, greater second half possession ensured victory for the Moyne lads after an even enough first half.
With both sides having to alter their shape for one reason or another it took a while for them to settle into their usual rhythm. Drom it was then who were first on the board as Fintan Purcell pointed a twenty metre free. However, the lead was instantly reversed when a long ball in from the heart of the Moyne defence found Ben Ryan in space and as he waited for the ball to drop, he made no mistake in rattling the Drom net from close range, Moyne on their way. Ryan was as ever determined in his play and brought the best out of Niall Fogarty in the Drom goal as Fogarty denied Ryan a certain goal minutes later. Indeed Fogarty made a number of telling saves as the Moyne lads tried to increase their advantage with Martin Ryan and Nathan Bowe also prominent. But at pivotal positions for Drom, Aaron Ryan and John Ryan were solid and cleared an amount of ball.
With twelve minutes gone Gearóid O’Connor opened his account with a free which was followed by a nice point from play from Dean Lawlor, Moyne it seemed gaining the edge. But Drom hustled and harried and brought themselves back into the match as Maidhc Fitzpatrick and Rory Foskin O’Dwyer channelled ball through midfield. O’Connor’s long free made it’s way to the net on nineteen minutes but it didn’t count as the whistle had sounded beforehand for a square ball.
Drom had weathered the storm and when John Ryan pointed in the next minute it left just the goal between them. Alas for Drom though inaccuracy at the posts cost them the half time lead, Moyne ahead at the break 1-02 to 02.
The second half was five minutes old when O’Connor pointed another free before Paddy Buckley scored a smashing point from a tight angle following a swift turn and strike. A brace of points from O’Connor gave Moyne breathing space as Drom now finding the going tough still had great performances from Aaron Ryan and John Ryan. With John Campion also trying his best in the inside forward line and Donnacha Barry giving his all in at corner back too for Drom.
Moyne though in reality were well on top and points from Lawlor and Eanna Guilfoyle pushed Moyne further ahead as they turned the screw, and while O’Connor also added two more points the score line was completed on the stroke of full time when Ben Ryan hammered home his second goal after a lovely solo through the Drom defence.
The delighted Moyne-Templetuohy captain, Gearóid O’Connor, collected the cup from Mid Coiste na nÓg Chairman, Joe O’Sullivan, with sponsor Conor Stakelum and Coiste Secretary Sally Young also in attendance.
