Galway defeated Tipperary by 0-10 to 1-6 in the Hastings Cup Under 21 Football competition on Tuesday January 20th at Portumna.

In the postponed U21 Football Hastings Cup clash with Galway played in Portumna on Tuesday night, January 20th, Galway emerged winners of a real dogfight of sixty minutes football by the minimum margin on a score line of, 0-10 to 1-6.

Played in tough conditions, both sides put together some great passages of football with Galway by virtue of hitting five points without reply between the fifteenth and twenty fifth minute of the second half proving the decisive period in getting over the line.

Right from the throw in Galway seemed to settle quicker and were first on target with the opening point before Paul Shanahan with a pointed free after seven minutes got Tipp on the scoreboard.

Given the conditions with both sides guilty of wayward shooting and handing, scores were at a premium with Galway proving the more accurate adding four further points while Tipp replied with pointed frees by Ian Fahey and Josh Keane to leave Galway ahead at the break, 0-5 to 0-3.

The second half saw Tipp up the ante and within fifteen minutes of the second half, the Premier County had raced into a three point lead courtesy of a well worked goal by Ian Fahey following a slick passing movement involving Liam Casey, Paul Shanahan and Colin O’Riordan. Josh Keane and Colin O’Riordan both added points each for a three point advantage to Tipp.

However Galway’s purple patch which included five points and a well saved penalty by Tipp’s Evan Comerford was enough to see them home.

Padraig Loorham did point for Tipp in the final minute but it will be Galway who were well beaten by Longford in their opening game who will go to the Hastings Cup semi-finals while Tipp will contest the Shield semis.
