Future Stars Illuminate Semple Stadium at Epic Tipperary ALLIANZ Cumann na mBunscol Finals

The annual Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling and Camogie Finals took place in Semple Stadium Thurles over two days on Wednesday, 17th June and Thursday, 18th June. Once again the weather was very kind to us. Record numbers turned up each day to witness all that we have come to cherish about our native games. We were treated to a feast of hurling over the two days in the Field of Legends. St. Colmcille’s created history in winning an U13 A hurling title for the first time. This is a huge achievement for a school with such small numbers. Sleeping giants Ballysloe and Ballinahinch emerged from the doldrums to win their first titles in a very long time while Borrisoleigh arguably stole the show in winning an unprecedented four county titles for the school. The state of hurling and camogie in our schools is definitely in a very healthy place based on what we were treated to over the two days. Thanks are due to Semple Stadium custodian David Hanley for the warm welcome he extended to all the schools and to Andy O’Gorman for ensuring that everything ran smoothly. A special thank you is also due to our referees Padraig Skeffington, Derek O’Mahoney, Christy McLoughlin, Willie Barrett, Fergal Horgan and John Bob Ryan plus our very capable Transition Year students for their enthusiasm, initiative and energy over the two days.

Special praise is also due to the various Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol officers for organising such a successful two days. The Cumann na mBunscol Officers were assisted greatly in coordinating and organising everything prior to and during the finals by GDA Officer Andy Ryan. Andy ensured that the digital scoreboard was in operation during the finals thus adding to the prestige of the occasion for our young players. Half time and full time score updates were tweeted from all thirty finals and we had a great response to the games on Twitter from people all over the world. Michael Trehy videoed all the games and we thank him for his cooperation throughout. We would also like to thank all the spectators who donated so generously to our ‘voluntary contribution bucket’ over the two days. We were amazed by the generosity and goodwill of people. This money will be of great assistance to us and will be used to promote our games. Most importantly, special praise should also be afforded to all the talented boys and girls who graced the hallowed turf in the cathedral of hurling over the two days. The level of skill on display fills us all with great confidence as we look to the future. I would like to thank all the teachers and coaches of the teams for their co-operation preceding and during the finals. All sixty team lists were submitted on time prior to the big days.

Tipperary ALLIANZ Cumann na mBunscol are very fortunate to have some of the most dedicated and committed teachers around in our county. It was obvious the great source of pride the teachers take in leading their school teams out on final days. This enthusiasm is infectious and it is clear to see the positive way it impacts on the young boys and girls as they aspire to emulate the achievements of their heroes. The teachers and coaches are setting a terrific example for all our young boys and girls. Chairman, Paddy Kelly would like to extend his thanks to Tipperary’s County Board and of course to all those at Semple Stadium who contributed to making the Finals such a memorable experience for all the young boys and girls who were fortunate enough to make it there this year. Under 11 E-1 Hurling Dualla NS 5-08 – Golden NS 3-05
The morning was dull with grey clouds hanging over Semple Stadium but the weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of Dualla and Golden as both teams arrived in Thurles to compete for the under 11 E-1 title and kick off the 2015 Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Finals. Dualla took as early lead with a well aimed over the shoulder shot from Eoin Moloughney over the Golden crossbar. This was followed in close succession by two more well aimed points from long range by Eoin again ably supported by Robbie D’Arcy and Bobby Power. Golden were quick to respond with Daniel O’Dwyer goal from a ground shuddering puck. Golden supporters roared with pride as their side were kept in contention. At half time it would be Dualla who took the lead however, Eoin Moloughney notching up no less than another 2-02 before the half time whistle. Golden never lost their edge and returned to the field of play more determined than ever. Ciaran Byrne, supported by Billy Loveridge, worked the ball up the field and found the back of the Dualla net. Daniel O’Dwyer managed another 1-01 dropping the ball in over the Dualla goalie, Patrick Gahan, with great skill. Cian Toomey, Bobby Power and Eoin Moloughney worked hard to meet the Golden challenge and notched up a goal apiece in quick succession. It was to be Dualla who would lift the shield and claim the title for their side. A great start to what was to be a marvellous two days of sport in the home of hurling.

Under 11 A-1 Hurling St. Mary’s CBS B 6-02 – Scoil Ailbhe B 1-00

The second match of the opening doubler header to the 2015 Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Finals was to be as exciting as its partner. Spirits were high as the both teams emerged from the tunnel with mentors in tow. St. Mary’s were to be the first to notch up a score with a well-aimed point over the bar from a 65 by David Cagney. The weather was grim but the spirits of Scoil Ailbhe players, mentors and supporters never wavered. St. Mary’s would find the Scoil Ailbhe net twice in the first half with Darragh O’Connor and Alan Jayan hitting the top corners of the Ailbhe goals with great effect. Scoil Ailbhe’s Seán Fogarty responded for his side with a long ball in and deflected past St. Mary’s Cian Corcoran to set supporters alight and notch up a goal for Scoil Ailbhe. The second half was to be as exciting with skill and determination shown by both sides. Darragh O’Connor and Alan Jayan would prove a lethal pair for Scoil Ailbhe as they managed to break their defence and score 3-01 between them. Peter McCarthy fought hard to defend the Scoil Ailbhe goal line but it was difficult to compete with the resolve of St. Mary’s CBS to lift the cup. When the final whistle blew, St. Mary’s 6-02 would grant them the title. Great credit due to Scoil Ailbhe who fought to the very end but it was to be St. Mary’s CBS day. A great display of dogged determination from both sides that set the tone for the the rest of the matches to come.

Under 11 A Hurling St. Mary’s CBS 2-06 Scoil Ailbhe 0-06

As the dust was settling from these two sides previous encounter in the U11 A-1 county final, Scoil Ailbhe and St. Mary’s would emerge from the tunnel again, St. Mary’s looking to take home the double U11 title while Scoil Ailbhe had a score to settle after losing out on the U11 A-1 shield only minutes previous. Both teams seemed determined and from the onset it was certain to be an exciting match. Ross Slattery was first to notch up a score for St. Mary’s while Liam O’Meara answered the challenge with a well-aimed 65 over the bar to claim Scoil Ailbhe’s first score of the day. St. Mary’s seemed to have the edge from early on in the game; James Morris showed his skill with a flick of the ball over the bar for St. Mary’s followed quickly by another 1-01 for his side. Scoil ailbhe didn’t let this dampen their spirits however; Liam O’Meara, backed by Kieran Purcell and Ciaran Woodlock would prove a lethal combination with 0-04 being scored from play in the first half. St. Mary’s were certainly fired up entering the second half much to the detriment of Scoil Ailbhe. Their backline cemented in Paraic bond managed to keep Scoil Ailbhe at bay while their forwards notched up score after score, Seán Cagney scoring no less than 1-02 in the second half. As the final whistle blew it was to be St. Mary’s who would lift the shield and claim the double title of U11 champions.

Under 11 F Hurling Drangan 5-04 – Dunkerrin 2-09

A mist fell over Semple Stadium as the Drangan and Dunkerrin teams emerged from the tunnel. This couldn’t dampen their spirits however; they were fired up by their mentors in the dressing rooms and ran onto the field to the roars of their supporters. Aidan Fitzgerald showed Drangan’s determination from the first whitle with a superb solo run down the field to find the back of the Dunkerrin net and notch up a goal for his side. Dunkerrin, not ones to bow out, replied to the Drangan challenge. Kevin McCormack and Dáire Pyne scored 0-05 between them to keep their team mates spirits high. Drangan would lead going into the second half following a sting of Aidan Fitzgerald goals. Kevin McCormack, supported by Michael Whyte and Enda Whyte led the charge against Drangan finding the back of the net twice while scoring some brilliant points. Dunkerrin backline of Luke Bolger and Niall Madden fought hard to keep out the Drangan forwards and this was reflected in the second half scoreline. It was not enough to stop the march of Drangan however; Jamie Brett would score the final goal for Drangan and seal their victory. DDrangan would go on to lift the U11 shield and claim the title for their side.

Under 11 C Hurling Borrisoleigh 4-14 – St. Oliver’s 6-06

The atmosphere in Semple Stadium was heating up as both teams emerged from the tunnel to the roars of the supporters they had brought. The U11 C title was the coveted prize and both teams were going to fight hard to claim victory. Paddy McCormack would set the pace for his side, scoring four points in quick succession for Borrisoleigh; heaping pressure on St. Oliver’s to reply. Dylan Murphy responded in kind for St. Oliver’s with a point from a free followed by a rasper of a goal past the Borrisoleigh keeper. Paddy McCormack, supported by Michael Kennedy and Daniel Ryan, managed another 1-03 for Borrisoleigh while Thomas McGarry would score 1-02 for St. Oliver’s to ensure they were level with Borrisoleigh going into the second half. Daniel Lee knocked a point over his shoulder and the Borrisoleigh crossbar and in doing so set the pace for the second half. It was sure to be as riveting as the first. Paddy McCormack proved too much for the St. Oliver’s defence, managing to score 3-04 from play. St. Oliver’s fought hard and managed 4-03 in the second half but the clock was to be against them and their momentum was halted by the full time whistle. Borrisoleigh would go on to claim the title after what was one of the most thrilling finals seen in the stadium over the two day event.

Under 11 A-1 Camogie Gaelscoil Clonmel 1-00 – New Inn GNS 10-01

It was the turn of the girls to start the 2015 Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Finals and Gaelscoil Clonmel and New Inn were to set a high standard for the camogie competitions from the onset. Aoibhe Bergin set the pace for an exciting match, scoring from a powerful ground strike to find the back of the Gaelscoil net and notch up the first score for her side. Charlotte Ní Choncheannainn and Béibhinn De Buitléir fought hard to work the ball up the field and attack the New Inn goal but a strong defence grounded in Gráinne O’Connor halted their advance and allowed New Inn time to regroup. New Inn would prove a challenge for Gaelscoil early on and lead into the second half. Gaelscoil responded to the New Inn challenge. This was reflected in the scoreline with New Inn only managing three scores in the second half. It was to be New Inn’s day hpwever; the Gaelscoil team made a gallant effort throughout to stop their relentless attack but to no avail. New Inn proved the dominant side and lift the shield for their school. The first match of the camogie finals proved as exciting an event as the hurling before it and set the tone some epic battles to come.

Under 11 C-1 Hurling Borrisoleigh 11-05 – Gaelscoil Clonmel 5-04

The seventh match of the day was to see a clash of north versus south as two teams emerged onto the field to contest the U11 C-1 title. Borrisoleigh’s Tom Delaney drew first blood putting a point over the Gaelscoil crossbar and setting the supporters in the stand alight. Oisín de Paor responded quickly to the challenge laid down and found the back of the Borrisoleigh net and heap the pressure on Borrisoleigh. Tom Delaney and Darragh Chute worked tirelessly to answer Gaelscoil’s challenge and scored 6-00 between them before the half time whistle. Conal Ó hAonláin and Odhran Ó Súilleabháin backed by an on-fire Oisín de Paor diligently tried to close the gap between their side and Borrisoleigh scoring 4-03 between them but it was to be Borrisoleigh who would lead going into the second half. Borrisoleigh were a team renewed coming on for the last leg of the match. The back line of Lochlainn Hodgins, Harry Groome and Seán Max put up a solid defence against Gaelscoil while the forward line lead by Tom Delaney (who would go on to be named Borrisoleigh Man of the Match) 5-04 in the second half. It was to be Borrisoleigh’s day as they steamed ahead in the scoreline. Gaelscoil never let their spirits slip but Borrisoleigh would claim the title and the shield for their school.

Under 11 D Camogie Borrisoleigh 5-01 – Knockavilla 2-01

The sun failed to break through the cliuds that covered Semple Stadium but this didn’t put a dampener on the teams of Borrisoleigh and Knockavilla who exploded form the tunnel to the roars of their supporters. Borrisoleigh were fired up, this being their school’s second match of the day. Knockavilla were as eager to claim the prize for their side. Danielle Ryan scored a marvellous 1-01 on the run to put Borrisoleigh into an early lead but Ava Abbott and Holly Fitzgerald responded with a goal apiece for their side. Knockavilla would have the advantage going into the second half being a goal ahead. Borrisoleigh returned to the field a team refreshed with a halftime pep talk from coaches Michael Small, Michael Ryan and Cathal O’Connell. Their back line of Katie Fitzgerald, Valerie Treacy and Emma Kelly would work hard to keep Knockavilla at bay and managed to deny them any scoring opportunities in the second half. At the same time goals from Niamh Ryan, Katie Fitzgerald and Danielle Ryan would ensure victory for Borrisoleigh and their third county final title of the day. Great credit due to Knockavilla for their efforts but it was not to be their day today.

Under 13 A Camogie Ballina 4-01 St. Mary’s Nenagh 1-00

As the midday sun peeked out from nehind the clouds so too these two sides emerged from the tunnels and onto the field of play, both sides hungry to claim the U13 A title for themselves and their schools. Derek O’Mahony blew the starting whistle and it was Caitlin McEvoy who exploded onto the ball and with a tremendous strike on the run managed to find the back of the St. Mary’s net and set the scoreboard alight for her side. Sarah Lane notched up a point form a free for her side to ensure Ballina’s lead going into the first half. Síne Morris lead the St. Mary’s attack and tried to get a score for her side but the Ballina defence cemented in Aoibhinn Ward and Naoise Houlihan kept her at bay and denied her this time. Ioabel Farnan managed a goal from a powerful strike on the ground for Ballina which was followed wuickly by Gráinne O’Brien. Niamh Bourke, goalie for St. Mary’s managed an epic save as Ballina’s attack relentlessly pounded the St. Mary’s goalie but Caitlin McEvoy would again find the back of St. Mary’s net and get the final score for her side. It was to be Ballina who would like the U13 A shield and claim victory for themselves. St. Mary’s fought hard but Ballina were thirsty for victory and it was hard to keep them from claiming it this day.

Under 13 D Hurling Borrisoleigh 5-07 Killenaule 2-03

From the onset it was clear that this was a match that was to set the standard high for all others to follow as two teams emerged from the dressing rooms ready for an epic battle. Borrisoleigh were hungry for their third title of the day. Killenaule, ware of this, were determined to stop their advance and claim victory for their side. Jack Cashin had aerial dominance for Killenaule from an early lead. Borrisoleigh were in danger of being completely denied the ball. Eddie Ryan would notch up their first two scores from frees such as the possession Killenaule in play. It was a pace Kilenaule found difficult to keep up with however, Borrisoleigh had an edge and repeatedly broke a strong Killenaule defence once they settled into play. Paddy McCormack and Michael Kennedy would quickly score a point apiece form play and give Borrisoleigh the confidence they needed. Eoin Walsh would answer the challenge set down by Borrisoleigh and rattle their net claiming a goal for his side and keeping Killenaule in the game. The second half would see Killenaule in second place but this didn’t stop their determination. Eddie Ryan would lead the charge for Borrisoleigh scoring two long range points in quick succession. Cillian Lambert and Eoin Walsh responded with points each, keeping Killenaule spirits high. Two goals by Michael Kennedy would heap the pressure onto Killenaule who responded well with Jack Hassett with a strike so hard it was like a round fired from a rifle. There was little that could be done to stop it. Borrisoleigh managed to keep a lead all through the second half however and this was to be to Killenaule’s detriment. Killenaule roared loudly for their adversaries showing great sportsmanship as Borrisoleigh claimed their fourth title of the day lifting the U13 D shield.

Under 13 F Hurling Ballinahinch 9-10 Barnane 7-12

As these two teams entered the field of play no one could have imagined the epic game that was to be played out. Two of the smaller schools that would play in Semple Stadium over the two day event, this game was to be one of the highest scoring and most thrilling games of the entire 2015 Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Finals. Tony Cahill would draw first blood for Barnane and score in quick succession no less that 2-02 for his side to the delight of the supporters present. Adam Ryan, Nathan Lenihan and Adam Ryan responded quick to the challenge laid down and 2-04 between them, heaping pressure on Barnane. Paul Mullen showed the skill of the Barnane side however with a point from a free most senior intercounty players would struggle with. Barnane was by no means about to roll over. Karl Kelly notched up 1-01 before the half time that would see Ballinahinch leading by 1-01 going into the second half. Karl would again lead the charge as the second half whistle blew and both teams came into life once again. A point for his efforts was to be his reward. Paudie Kinane broke through the Ballinahinch defence of Jake Edwards and Liam King and rattled the net to the screams of supporters. After a hard fought battle the dust settled and it was to be Ballinahinch who would claim the title for their side after some tremendous displays of hurling determination from both sides. It was Ballinahinch’s first wim in 19 years, their second in the history of the competition.

Under 13 G Hurling Inch 9-07 Lisronagh 2-17

This was to be an epic battle of north versus south as two teams calmly walked from their dressing rooms ready to fight hard to claim the victory for their side. Inch, coming from the hurling stronghold of north Tipperary were sure to be favourites compared to Lisronagh who were coming from the football south and while Inch attacked first the Lisronagh goalie Riain O’Halloran kept them at bay with a superb save for his side. An over the shoulder point form Dean English would put Lisronagh on the scoreboard and heap pressure on the Inch side. Maidhc Fitzpatrick and Bryan Moore would show their sides determination and lift Inch spirits with a goal apiece in quick succession. Lisronagh spirits didn’t faulter however, Peter McGarry, Dáire Luttreell and Rory Collins scoring point after point for Lisronagh to the dismay of the Inch side. A Jack Lillis goal just before the half time whistle gave Inch the lead but only just. It was still all the play for. Inch would return refreshed going into the second half and heap the pressure onto Lisronagh. The lethal combination of Luttrell and McGarry would strike time and again for Lisronagh. Inch would respond in the shape of Jack Lillis, Maidhc Fitzpatrick and Bryan Moore, each managing to rattled the Lisronagh net for their side. The Lisronagh points seemed unstoppable but Inch goals would win the day. As the final whistle blew it would be a northern victory to the roars of the Inch supporters.

As the day was drawing to an end on day one on the 2015 Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Finals the girls were to take to the field again and prove that the future was bright for Tipperary camogie. Áine Slattery took to the field quickly for Kilbarron and rocketed past the Donaskeigh defence and rattled the back of the net to the roars of the Kilbarron supporters. A combination of Ellie Hadnett and Caoimhe McCarthy responded with 0-05 for their side and kept Donaskeigh in the game. Going into the half time it was to be a draw. Upon their return to the field of play both sides were determined that would not be the case when the final whistle blew. Laura Leenane, supported by Áine Slattery and Eva Burke would score no less than 3-02 for Kilbarron. Caoimhe McCarthy would be her side’s top scorer managing 3-01 for Donaskeigh with the help of Emma Daly and Chloe Farrell. Such was the skill and determination of both sides that the game was to go right down to the wire. As the final whistle blew it was to be only a point that separated both sides. Kilbarron would go on to lift the shield and claim victory for their side.

Under 13 H Hurling Ballysloe 10-08 Killea 5-05

As evening fell on the first day of the 2015 Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Finals it was to be the turn of some of the smallest schools in the county to take to the field and though they were small in number they were giants in skill and determination as the whistle blew to signal the start of the last game of the day. David Lanigan scored a long range point to claim the first score for Ballysloe. This was quickly responded to by James O’Dwyer for Killea. It seemed that both teams were evenly matched and that the game would come right down to the final whistle. C.J. Lawlor and James O’Dwyer heaped pressure on the Killea side rattling the back of the net 4 times in the first half. Ned Walsh and Michael Coffey tried gallantly to keep pace scoring 1-01 from play for their side but it was Ballysloe who would lead into the second half. Tadhg Quinlan didn’t let this dampen his sides spirts however; emerging onto the field for the second half refreshed and ready for a battle. He would go on to score 1-01 for Killea with his hard work. Ben Doheny fought back for Ballysloe and supported by C.J. Lawlor and David Lonergan managed a goal each. These scores would go on to seal victory for Ballysloe. Killea fought hard until the final whistle but as it blew so too did the winds of fortune for Ballysloe. They would go on to claim victory for their side and claim the title for their side. It was a triumphant end to a great day of hurling prowess in Semple Stadium.

Day 2 of our finals got off to the perfect start with a game for the ages between two giants of the camogie game in Tipperary primary school. The game did not disappoint. Chelsea White doubled on the ball to the net to get St. Mary’s off the mark. A fine goal from Lisa O’Connor after a long solo run had the Boherlahan crowd in high spirits. Lisa O’Connor added a further goal and a point as half time approached. Goals from Chelsea White and Lauren Spain soon followed. A long range goal from Lisa O’Connor as halftime approached sent Boherlahan into the halftime interval full of hope. The move of Caoimhe Connolly into a more central position in the second half was decisive in turning the game St. Mary’s way as she was able to repel many of Boherlahan’s advances into danger territory. A fine goal from St. Mary’s Lauren Spain ultimately decided a fantastic contest which neither team deserved to lose as there was so little between these two wonderful sides.

Ballylooby produced a terrific team display to emerge victorious in this U11 B camogie decider. Early goals from Rebecca Burke and Clara English settled any nerves they may have had in the lead up to this game. Meabh Brennan ensured it wasn’t all one sided however with some wonderful long range points for Upperchurch. An Aisling Ryan goal just before half time sent Ballylooby into a commanding 4-01 to 0-03 lead at the interval. It was a lead they would not relinquish as they tightened their grip on proceedings in the second half with further goals from Clara English. Caroline Shanahan gave a player of the match display for an Upperchurch team that fought bravely to the bitter end while Jill Ryan looks like a very exciting player with a bright future for a superb Ballylooby team.

Both teams entered the sun drenched hallowed turf of Semple Stadium full of hope in this U11 C camogie decider. Neither school are strangers to the big stage. On this occasion however, it was Donaskeigh who made the brighter start with Chloe Farrell and Ellie Hadnett tormenters in chief scoring five goals and four points between them in a very impressive first half display from the girls from the west. Two Emma O’Sullivan points in the first half gave Moycarkey a glimmer of hope as they gathered themselves for the halftime team talk from their Bainisteoir Elaine Brady. The second half was much more competitive with the Moycarkey girls throwing the kitchen sink at it. Ellie Hadnett was not in a compromising mood however and a further 1-05 from her stick sent Donaskeigh into dreamland to crown a magical day for Príomhoide Pat O’Carroll and his charges.

Gaelscoil Carrick On Suir and Rosegreen produced a titanic tussle in this absorbing U11 D1 decider. Three first half goals from the stick of Harry Ó Laoire inspired his Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir teammates. A brilliant Daniel Keating goal and a brace of points from Jamie Doyle kept Rosegreen in touch at the break. The second half was end to end with neither side giving an inch. Rosegreen thundered into the game and two Padraig Quinlan goals filled them with hope as the game reached its final act. A late Cain Ó hUisce goal proved decisive however as Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir held on for a famous victory. Harry Ó Laoire from Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir and Padraig Quinlan from Rosegreen gave player of the match displays for their respective schools. It was a pity there had to be a loser but such is sport.

Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir and Rahealty produced the proverbial humdinger in a rip roaring U11 D hurling decider. Fiachra O’Gorman gave Rahealty the perfect start with an early goal. Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir are nothing but resilient however and buoyed up by their victory in the previous game, came storming back with two sublime finishes from the stick of Fionn de Barra to see them just a point in arrears at the break. The interval gave all those present a chance to catch their breath. The second half was no different as both teams played with great confidence and freedom. Second half goals from Paul Noonan and Philip Hayes for Rahealty were scores worthy of any occasion. Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir finished like all great champions do however and late scores from Tomás Ó Donnchadha and Bobby Ó Druacháin sealed a historic double for the boys from the south. Philip Hayes for Rahealty and Stiofáin Ó Toibín for Gaelscoil Carrick on Suir are two players we’ll hear a lot more of in the near future no doubt.

We were treated to another absolute classic in this U11 B Hurling decider. St. Peter & Paul’s stormed out of the tracks in the opening exchanges and two Conor Guiry goals and and one from Anthony Keeley saw them enter the halftime break in front on a scoreline of 3-02 to 0-02. The two Templederry points had come from the stick of the hugely impressive Sean Collins. The second half was a much different affair with Templederry finally settling into the game to produce the lovely fluent hurling that we have come to associate with this fine school over the years. Caoimhe Carey scored three second half goals for Templederry and definitely looks like a player destined for great things in the future. She was aided and abetted by her outstanding teammates and player of the match Aaron Ryan. Rory Maher’s well taken second half goal was the crucial score in getting St. Peter & Paul’s over the line. There is no doubt we will see this fine Templederry side challenging for U13 honours in the not too distant future. Deji Williams for St. Peter & Paul’s was another who lit up Semple Stadium with his vast array of skills. This was a game that will live long in the memory and showcased all that we love about our native games.

It was Mullinahone’s ability to shoot points from all angles that decided this game against a very good Ballycahill side. Mullinahone were out of the blocks quickly and had early scores on the board from Dylan Webster and Eoin O’Dwyer. Ballycahill went for the jugular in the first half and a couple of superb goals from talisman Jim Ryan filled them with confidence as the first act reached its climax. The second act did not disappoint either as both teams went on the offensive. Josh Rowan scored one of the goals of the year on the resumption to give Mullinahone a bit of leeway going down the home straight. Like all great teams, Ballycahill kept hanging in and some sublime shooting from Jimmie Molony Lahart kept them in touch. Another goal from sharp shooter Josh Rowan sealed Ballycahill’s fate and ensured that the men from the south would emerge victorious. Mullinahone were a well oiled machine that had a mercurial talent in Josh Rowan to add the finishing touches to fine team moves. Ballycahill were just as impressive and their players of the match Aaron Holland and Rory Fleming are surely destined for greatness.

This game was played in temperatures approaching 20 degrees. It was a pulsating contest from start to finish. Gaelscoil Durlas ultimately emerged victorious after recovering from a halftime three point deficit. But that is only part of the tale. A first half goal from Eoin Carrún looked set to inspire his Gaelscoil Durlas teammates with St. Peter & Paul’s Kyle Dargan also in a rich vein of form. St. Peter & Paul’s headed into the halftime interval three points ahead and look poised to the land the coveted U11 B1 hurling title. Labhaoise Cunningham’s Gaelscoil Durlas charges had not read the script however and proceeded to take the game by the scruff of the neck in the opening stages of the second half. Two Sam Ó Riain goals and a well taken goal from Cian Ó Cléirigh was enough to seal the deal for Gaelscoil Durlas. This was the decisive period in the game that ultimately secured victory for an excellent Gaelscoil Durlas side. This wonderful St. Peter & Paul’s will no doubt be back in the stadium on finals day in the not too distant future.

This was another game that had supporters from both sides on the edge of their seats. Eva O’Dwyer gave Annacarty the perfect start with a well taken point off her left hand side. Ballylooby goals from Ciara Morrissey and Helen Burke saw them thundering back into the game. A wonder goal from Cora Heffernan on the stroke of halftime was a welcome fillip for Annacarty. The second half was tit for tat with both sides throwing caution to the wind. Another Ciara Morrissey goal left the Ballylooby supporters ecstatic. Annacarty responded well with terrific scores from Eva O’Dwyer and Cora Heffernan to set up a nail biting finish. The result was in doubt right up until the very end when a Ciara Kelly rocket to the Ballylooby net supplied the coup de grace for an excellent Annacarty NS side. Players of the match Laura Heffernan for Annacarty NS and Kacey Meehan for Ballylooby NS produced terrific performances for their respective teams and will no doubt be seen for many years to come on the biggest stage of all.

This game sizzled from start to finish. It was arguably one of the games of the year. Two powerhouses of the schools game produced hurling of the very highest quality. Neither school are strangers to the stadium which meant that both schools got into their stride pretty quickly. Urban Ó Nualláin scored a terrific goal for Gaelscoil Durlas in the early stages with a ground stroke from Knockavilla’s Daniel O’Shea keeping his side in touch. The second half was also played at a frenetic pace. Knockavilla will rue to the two shots that crashed against the Gaelscoil Durlas crossbar and away to safety. Gaelscoil Durlas were very clinical in the second half and goals from James Tréanlámhach and Oisín Ó Briain were enough to secure a famous victory for the Thurles school. This game had everything and it will be very interesting to see how many of these players develop over the coming years.

After disappointment at the final stage in Semple Stadium last year, Corville NS bounced back in spectacular fashion to secure a first ever Co. Title in the U13 grade as they proved much too strong for a spirited and defiant Ardfinnan NS side. The game was decided in the opening stages when Tipperary Primary game player scored three quick goals in the opening minutes. A long range Seán Cunningham point gave the Maroons a glimmer of hope. This hope soon evaporated as Corville went on a scoring spree just before halftime with more goals from Dylan Hogan and Kenny Lee. To their eternal credit, the Maroons were much more competitive in the second half. Liam O’Sullivan’s charges gained some consolation in this half through scores from Morgan Lambert (point) and an Eoin Wyse goal from a penalty. Corville were a very strong outfit and obviously used the hurt from last year’s final defeat to spur them on to final glory this year.

Played under the scorching summer sun this fifteen goal thriller had everything. The finishing from both teams on the biggest stage of all in the field of legends was a sight to behold. Both teams hurled up a storm in an exciting opening half. An Éabha Hogan goal was the pick of the scores for an excellent Cloneen side in the opening half. Danielle O Mahoney responded in kind for Ayle with a spectacular finish to the Cloneen net. The second half saw Ayle take the game by the scruff of the neck with 3-03 from Jill-Anne Quirke ultimately closing the deal for her team. She was well supported by her terrific team mates who provided her with plenty of scoring opportunities. Cloneen never gave up even when it was obvious the game was going away from them and a late Eimear Boland goal was just reward for their heroic efforts throughout this final.

Our U13 D Camogie final saw Thomastown prove much too strong for a resilient Sacred Heart side. Sacred Heart started well with two terrific Emma Synnott goals. Thomastown came storming back into the game and an Eimear Heffernan hat trick left them in pole position at the half way point in the first half. Further goals from Eimear Heffernan and Rebecca Farrell left Sacred Heart facing a mountain to climb in the second half. To their eternal credit they never gave up and fought bravely to the bitter end. Thomastown are an exceptional team and in player of the match Leonie Farrell have a player with a very bright future. Sacred Heart Player of the Match Sharon Shanahan is another player we’re sure to hear a lot more of in the future.

The last game of our finals between Carrig NS and Holycross did not disappoint the large numbers that travelled to support both teams. The first half saw each team enjoy supremacy at different stages. DJ McGrath lit up Semple Stadium for the second year in a row and his early goal had the large Carrig crowd on their feet after a couple of minutes. Ben Hennessy and Stephen Quinlan responded with four points between them to leave Holycross right back in contention at the interval. With Player of the Match Shane Gleeson at the heart of much of their good play, Carrig NS were poised for victory. Holycross had other things on their minds and a late Joe Caesar goal saw them wrestle the title away from a gallant Carrig side. This was a terrific contest between two supremely talented sides.

Our 13 B camogie decider was another terrific game. Neither Cashel GNS nor Holycross are strangers to the stadium. This allowed each team to play with great freedom and no shortage of skill. An early Mary Kate Cahill goal set Holycross on their way. Julie Brennan followed with another major soon after this as this terrific Holycross side got into their rhythm. Holycross led at the break and it was a lead they would never relinquish. An Abbie Moloney goal had the Cashel GNS supporters jumping for joy. This was short-lived however as further scores from Aisling O Sullivan, Sarah Woods and Mary Ryan ensured the title was going back to Holycross for another year.

This eagerly anticipated clash between two giants of primary schools hurling did not disappoint. Both teams were seeking a first ever title at the U13 A grade. Two early goals from James Corcoran and Killian Fennell gave Templemore the perfect start. Will Ryan’s men responded well to this early setback and three quick points and a super TJ Barron goal from a ground stroke saw the large Cashel contingent erupt in the colosseum. A Jack McGrath free was to be Cashel’s only score in the second half as Templemore took a vice-like grip on proceedings. A Ciarán McCormack goal along with points from John Campion and James Kennedy ensured that Templemore would finally get their hands on the holy grail. They have been on quite a journey to achieve this goal and are to be commended for never giving up on their dream after coming very close in recent years. Cashel are also a terrific side and it is surely only a matter of time before they achieve their dream of securing an U13 A title. Well done to both schools on serving up such an enthralling spectacle.
