Minor: Galway power to another All-Ireland title

ELECTRIC IRELAND ALL-IRELAND MHC FINAL: GALWAY 4-13 TIPPERARY 1-16

Report from GAA.ie

Galway have secured a first All-Ireland minor title since 2011, and their 10th in total, with a thrilling victory over Tipperary at Croke Park. The sides were level at the break, but Jeffrey Lynskey’s young charges hit 2-2 without reply in four second half minutes to secure the Irish Press Cup.

Tipperary did come back late on and Tommy Nolan’s goal in the last minute ensured a nervy end for the Tribesboys, but Galway rounded off a terrific performance with a fourth goal through sub Michael Lynch in added time. Galway went into an early two-point lead thanks to two scores from their free-taker Evan Niland, but Tipperary were soon level as Lyndon Fairbrother and Tommy Nolan hot the target.

Tipperary had a superb chance to make the first real breakthrough on 13 minutes when centre-forward Garry Ryan broke clear of the Galway defence and forced a great reflex save from goalkeeper Darragh Gilligan. Brian McGrath landed the resultant 65 and then Fairbrother put Tipp ahead with another free. However, Galway hit back with a goal against the run of play – Jack Coyne’s effort dropped shot and Tipp corner back Jamie Quigley only managed to bat the ball into the path of Brian Concannon, whose sweetly struck shot nestled in the bottom corner.

Tipp leveled soon after through fine scores from Alan Tynan and Nolan, and it was tit for tat for the closing stages in the first half, as Fairbrother hit his fifth of the game to draw his side level at the break, 0-10 to 1-7. The start of the second half followed a similar patter, but Galway made a real surge when they struck 2-2 without reply in four minutes. Both goals were beautifully worked – Concannon delivered a precise handpass to Liam Forde, who was introduced as a sub just a minute earlier, and the Ardrahan man finished superbly with his first play of the game.

Niland then nailed a 65 and Galway snaffled a third goal on the 40 minute mark, as Cianan Fahy burst onto a pass at a great angle and nailed a rasping shot past Pádraic Hayes. Galway maintained that comfortable lead right up to the 59th minute when Nolan’s speculative effort found the back of the Galway net. Darragh Gilligan, the Galway ‘keeper, made a brilliant save to make sure the gap stayed at five points and then boys from the west sealed the win when Lynch buried a goal on the break in the second minute of added time.

Match Preview

In what hopefully will be unprecedented times in Minor affairs for Tipperary, next Sunday, September 6th, the Blue and Gold carriage gets well and truly rolling on a two week rollercoaster as the Tipperary Minor Hurlers run out for their encounter against Galway in this year’s Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor Final in Croke Park at 1.15pm.

We send best wishes to manager Liam Cahill and his squad as they go in search of glory on Sunday. Tipperary’s last victory in this grade came in 2012 when Bill Maher from Kilsheelan Kilcash led the side to All-Ireland success. This time round the whole county hopes his South Tipp comrade Stephen Quirke from Moyle Rovers can do the same by 2.30pm on Sunday in Croke Park and bring home the Irish Press Cup for the twentieth time.

As indicated last week Tipperary and Galway have met in seven finals with Tipperary six to one up in the head to head. Including these seven finals, there have been twenty-nine previous meetings of Tipperary and Galway in the Minor Hurling Championship, with Tipperary having won nineteen games, Galway eight and there have been two draws.

The last minor meeting was an All-Ireland Semi-Final at Croke Park on August 19th, 2012 when Tipperary scored 2-16 to Galway’s 1-14 on their way to All-Ireland glory. Paud O’Dwyer from Carlow will be the referee on Sunday.

Garda Safety Information for Croke Park Full House Games

Jones Road Crowd Management and Crowd Dispersal Plan

In the interest of safety, measures are being implemented to prevent crowd congestion on Jones Road outside the Croke Park Hotel. Jones Road has become a meeting point / access to other areas for patrons attending Croke Park games. The result of this is to seriously increase / interfere with the crowd flows resulting in pedestrian congestion in that area.

Jones Road must be kept exclusively to facilitate exit from the Hogan and Nally Stands for a period of approx 30 minutes after the game ends.

Pre Game Crowd Management Plan :

In the interest of safety patrons are advised as follows :

1. Not to enter the Jones Road / Russell Street unless they hold a Hogan or Nally Stand ticket.
2. Not to congregate in vicinity of Croke Park Hotel as this causes a serious obstruction to crowd movement in that area. Gardai will move waiting persons in this area.
3. Use coloured routes outlined on Croke Park websites to access the stadium.
4. Arrange meeting points at a distance away from Jones Road.

Post Game Crowd Management Plan:

In the interest of safety patrons are advised as follows :
1. Patrons exiting the Hogan Stand and Nally Stands will be directed to exit by a planned route as they leave these stands onto Jones Road.
2. Patrons are further requested not to congregate in vicinity of Croke Park Hotel as this causes a serious obstruction to crowd movement in that area. Gardai will move waiting persons in this area.
3. Patrons exiting via Clonliffe Road and via North Circular Road are asked by Gardai not enter onto Jones Road and not to congregate in vicinity of Croke Park Hotel.
4. Meet friends at a place a distance away from Jones Road

The result of patron active participation and compliance will result in a safer entry and exit from the stadium for all patrons and children and make the stadium environs a safer place for all people.

Special Garda Appeal : Jones Road Post Game

This is a Garda appeal from Inspector Tony Gallagher to supporters from Dublin and Mayo and Kilkenny and Galway attending Croke Park :

Frequently Asked Questions

PATRON FAMILIARISATION AND PARTICIPATION IN THE FOLLOWING INITIATIVES WILL GREATLY ASSIST IN PROMOTING A SAFER DAY OUT IN CROKE PARK STADIUM.

Q. I wish to meet people at Croke Park Hotel BEFORE the game, is this possible?
A. Unless you have a Hogan or Nally Stand ticket for the game you will not be allowed access to Jones Road. You should arrange to meet your friend at a location away from Jones Road.

Q. I want to meet my friend AFTER the game on the street outside the Croke Park Hotel. Can I go and wait for them there?
A. No. Where this area is being used as a meeting point, it causes unnecessary crowd congestion and affects pedestrian exits from the Hogan and Nally Stands. For safety reasons Jones Road must be kept exclusively for Hogan and Nally Stand exits. You should arrange to meet your friend at a location away from Jones Road.

Q. I will be leaving the stadium by Clonliffe Road. Can I go to the city centre direction by Jones Road?
A. No. You will be directed to go to your destination by Lower Drumcondra Road as Jones Road is needed exclusively for people exiting the Hogan and Nally Stands.

Q. I will be leaving the stadium by North Circular Road. I want to go to my car in Clonliffe College car park. Can I go to the car park by Jones Road?
A. No. You will be directed to go to the car park by Lower Drumcondra Road as Jones Road is needed exclusively for people exiting the Hogan and Nally Stands.
Q. Why can I not go by Jones Road?
