Coláiste Cholmáin Fermoy are the 2016 Dean Ryan Cup (Under 16.5 A Hurling) Champions after a hard earned 2-12 to 1-13 victory over Thurles CBS in this replayed final. Played in bitterly cold conditions, Fermoy got off to the better start in a somewhat low-key first half and led by 0-4 to 0-2 after a first quarter where scoring chances were at a premium. Thurles CBS improved their shooting accuracy in the second quarter and reeled off six points without reply to race in to a 0-8 to 0-4 lead approaching half-time before a late Colmans point left three in it at the break, 0-8 to 0-5.

Coláiste Cholmáin Fermoy began the second half intent on reducing the deficit but were wayward in front of goal as Thurles converted two early chances to stretch their lead out to five points, 0-10 to 0-5 after 7 minutes of the second half. Eventually though, the more direct play of the Fermoy side began to pay dividends, scoring three unanswered points followed by an excellent Brian Roche goal to the top corner of the net in the 45th minute to give Colmans a 1-8 to 0-10 advantage. The Fermoy side added on another point in the 47th minute to round off a 1-4 to 0-0 spurt and they looked set for victory.

Thurles CBS to their credit fought their way back in to the game and thanks to the accuracy of Darren Flood, scored the next three points to take the lead heading in to the last five minutes of normal time. The game was now at fever pitch with both teams fighting tooth and nail for every ball. St.Colmans managed to equalise in the 56th minute before a minute of mayhem.

Firstly, a speculative ball in to the St. Colmans goalmouth was not dealt with and Thurles CBS midfielder Kieran Moloney was on hand to push the ball over the line from close range. Thurles did not have time to celebrate this score for long as from the puckout, St. Colmans worked the ball in to a scoring position for substitute Patrick O’Flynn to set up fellow substitute Dylan O’Connor for a goal and the sides were level once again.

The next score would be crucial and it arrived in the 60th minute as St. Colmans added a point from Eoin Carey. Thurles tried as best they could to find an equaliser but the Colmans defence stood firm and the insurance point by James Kearney for Colmans was added just as the last of the three minutes additional time elapsed to round off a two point victory for Coláiste Cholmáin Fermoy.
