J.K. Brackens 1-19 Kickhams 1-7

Report by Jerry Ring

This Roinn Two Clean Ireland County SHC game, played in a bright but chilly Boherlahan last Saturday evening was poor fare and did little to warm the cockles of the small band of loyal supporters from either side.Although the West side got off to a dream start,up 1-02 after four minutes, this was about as good as it was to get for Kickhams. Once the Brackens got into their stride it was one way traffic, with Shane Scully orchestrating every thing up front and giving a man of the match performance finishing up with an incredible 1-14.

Brendan Ryan pointed a free from the throw in and Paul O’Dwyer goaled before Shane Morrissey pointed in the fourth minute. However Brackens responded when Kevin Mulryan set up Shane Scully for a goal, he then pointed a free before Shane Burke fired over the leveller after just eight minutes.Shane Scully and Shane Morrissey swapped points to leave the sides deadlocked again after twelve minutes. Then things began to fall apart for the Kickhams, who failed to raise a flag for the remainder of the half.Brackens led 1-06 to 0-03 at the interval.

After the break Brackens piled on the pressure, but the Kickhams were clinging on.After forty eight minutes only four points separated the sides, Brackens leading 1-11 to 1-07.The final twelve minutes belonged to the Brackens, and they fired over twelve unanswered points to run out deserving winners.

Brackens were well set up with a strong spine. Central players Tommy Kennedy and Eamon Corcoran shone in defence with Cathal Scully also prominent. Aidan Fogarty and Lorcan Egan were on top at midfield.Up front Shane Bourke, Kevin Mulryan and Brian Kennedy were also to the fore. The Kickhams failed to match the toughness and skill of their opponents. However Eoin Carew, Tommy Comerford and Michael Shanahan fought to the end in their beleaguered defence,as did Shane Morrissey and Damian McGrath at mid field. The Kickhams attack lacked penetration and only David Butler, Paul O’Dwyer and Brendan Ryan showed any threat.
Lorrha defeated Davins in the other Group game, so the Kickhams v Davins encounter will be crucial for both sides.
