Tipperary defeated Waterford by 0-19 to 2-3 in the Cadbury Munster GAA Football Under 21 Championship Quarter-Final on Wednesday March 12th at Fraher Field Dungarvan. Tipperary led by 0-9 to 1-0 at half time and though Waterford scored an early second half goal, Tipperary proved too strong on the night to run out 10 point winners.
Power’s bright sparks leave Déise in the dark
Tipperary 0-19 Waterford 2-03
By Tomás McCarthy for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Tipperary ruthlessly dispatched an undercooked Waterford at a foggy Fraher Field last night. In front of an attendance of 345, last year’s beaten provincial finalists went about their business right from the throw-in and 11 different players got themselves on the scoresheet.
David Power’s side fielded nine starters from the 2011 All-Ireland minor-winning team but, to be fair to the hosts, their prospects were hampered by the fact they’ve merely one month of training behind them.
Tipp ran up three points inside five minutes through Sean Flynn (free), Greg Henry and Michael Quinlivan. The latter, operating at No 14, ran the defence ragged for his 21-minute cameo before succumbing to injury.
Josh Keane, Quinlivan and Flynn added further points to stretch the gap to six at the close of the first quarter. The one-way traffic continued for the remainder of the half and John McGrath got in on the act and Henry added two more.
Waterford finally raised a cheer through a splendid piece of teamwork that resulted in a three-pointer for David Hallahan on 23 minutes. Substitute Liam McGrath resumed the scoring after 24 seconds of the second period.
Jimmy Healy’s Waterford displayed their gritty qualities in trying circumstances. Senior hurling panellist Ryan Donnelly came off the bench at half-time and he applied a classy soccer-style finish low to the rigging on 34 minutes following a Seamus Keating delivery (0-10 to 2-0).
Tipperary quickly readjusted to dodge any danger. They notched six uninterrupted points — before a late Waterford flurry — to sail into a semi-final meeting with Clare next week.
Scorers for Waterford: D Hallahan, R Donnelly 1-0 each, K Sheehan 0-2, G Nugent 0-1 (f).
Scorers for Tipperary: G Henry 0-4, S Flynn 0-3 (2fs), J Keane, L McGrath, M Quinlivan 0-2 each, B Maher, S O’Brien, J McGrath, I Fahey, K Fahey, L Casey 0-1 each.

Tipperary too strong for Waterford and qualify for Munster U21 semi-final with Clare
Report from thescore.ie
Tipperary 0-19 Waterford 2-3
TIPPERARY SET UP a Munster U21 semi-final meeting with Clare next week after they impressively despatched Waterford in tonight’s quarter-final tie at the Fraher Field in Dungarvan. Tipperary, who featured several 2011 All-Ireland minor winners and reached last year’s Munster U21 final, signalled their intentions from the off as they raced into a 0-9 to 0-0 lead by the 21st minute mark.
They were completely on top and 11 players overall weighed in with points over the course of the night. Waterford rallied with a David Hallinan goal before the break to leave it 0-9 to 1-0 in the Premier side’s favour at the interval. A second goal from Ryan Donnelly, a member of the Waterford senior hurling side, early in the second-half gave Waterford hope but Tipperary upped the ante again to pull clear.
Tipperary were ahead by 0-16 to 2-0 entering the final quarter and even the loss through injury of senior forward Michael Quinlivan, a recent Sigerson Cup winner with UCC, failed to halt their charge. Greg Henry, Sean Flynn, Joshua Keane, Quinlivan and Liam McGrath all caught the eye in the scoring stakes with the David Power-managed side running out winners by ten points.
Scorers for Tipperary: Greg Henry 0-4, Sean Flynn 0-3 (0-2f), Michael Quinlivan, Joshua Keane, Liam McGrath (0-1f) 0-2 each, John McGrath, Stephen O’Brien, Ian Fahey, Kevin Fahey, Bill Maher, Liam Casey 0-1 each.
Scorers for Waterford: David Hallahan, Ryan Donnelly 1-0 each, Kevin Sheehan 0-2, Gavin Nugent 0-1 (0-1f).

Cadburys Munster Under 21 Football Quarter-Final – Waterford v Tipperary
Fraher Field Dungarvan is the venue for tonight’s opening round fixture in the Cadburys Munster Under 21 Football Quarter-Final between Tipperary and Waterford. This is a repeat of the fixture from last year’s competition when Waterford stayed within touching distance of Tipperary for 40 minutes before Tipperary made home advantage pay en route to a 1-17 to 0-9 victory.
While Waterford’s record at this grade has been disappointing in recent years, the Deise displayed some impressive performances at Minor level last year, defeating Limerick in the first round and putting in a gallant display away to Kerry in the semi-final. Waterford manager Jimmy Healy and his selectors have named six of the 2013 starting line-up for tonight’s game while Brian Looby and Michael Troy graduate from the 2013 Minor Football team which defeated Limerick.
For Tipperary, they will be looking to make an impression on this year’s Championship having won Munster and All-Ireland titles at Minor level three years ago. 11 of that All-Ireland winning team have been named for tonight’s game as Tipperary manager David Power puts his best foot forward in an attempt to win the Munster Under 21 Football title for the first time since 2010. Players like Michael Quinlivan, Steven O’Brien and Ian Fahey have been involved in Tipperary’s impressive start to this year’s Allianz Football League and along with team captain John Meagher, centre-back Seamus Kennedy and midfielder Colin O’Riordan, they will provide the backbone to an impressive line-up.
Throw-in tonight is at 7:30pm and the winners will travel to play Clare in Milltown Malbay on Wednesday March 19th. Sean Joy (Kerry) is the referee on this occasion with admission prices being €10 for adults, €5 for student and OAP’s while as with all games in this competition, all Under 16s are free.

Munster Under 21 Football Championship – Useful Information
- Waterford’s last victory over Tipperary in the Munster Under 21 Football Championship came in the 2006 Quarter-Final when Waterford won by 3-6 to 1-5 in Fermoy.
- Having failed to win a game in the Munster Under 21 Football Championship between 2002 and 2006, Tipperary have managed to win at least one match in this competition in 6 of the last 7 years, including the 2010 Munster title.
- Waterford have lost their last eight matches in the Munster Under 21 Football Championship.
- Cork are going for their fourth Munster Under 21 Football title in a row. The last such sequence of victories for Cork came from 2004 to 2007 when they won four titles on the trot – each of them against different opposition in the final (Kerry, Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary). Cork have also won 3 or more Munster titles in a row in this competition from 1969-1971, 1979-1981, 1984-1986.
- At the turn of the millennium, only Cork and Kerry had won Munster Under 21 Football titles with Kerry out in front in the roll of honour by 23 titles to 15. Since then, Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary have captured 1 title each while Cork have dominated to the extent that a victory in the 2014 Munster Under 21 Football Championship will see the Rebel County draw level on the roll of honour with Kerry for the first time since the 1970’s.
- Kerry won five Munster Under 21 Football titles in a row from 1995 to 1999, winning the All-Ireland in three of those five years – 1995, 1996 and 1998.
