Fennelly hat-trick downs Tipp in classic

Allianz Hurling League Division 1A: Kilkenny 5-20 Tipperary 5-14

Report from the GAA.ie web site

Kilkenny overturned a 10-point first half deficit to beat their great rivals Tipperary in an incredible game which produced 10 goals at Nowlan park on Sunday afternoon.

Colin Fennelly was the Cats’ hero, scoring 3-5 from play, as Brian Cody’s side recovered from last week’s defeat to Clare, and the concession of four first half goals, to open their account in the 2014 Allianz Hurling League.

In keeping with recent encounters between the sides, this was a classic. Tipperary led by 4-9 to 2-9 at the break and there looked to be no way back for a Kilkenny side whose defence was torn apart at will in the opening 20 minutes. Walter Walsh was the only player in tiger stripes to show any sort of resistance, hitting four super points from play in the first half.

Noel McGrath, Jason Forde and the outstanding Séamus Callanan (2) all fired goals as Tipperary moved 4-9 to 1-8 ahead. Henry Shefflin, who finished with 1-5, then left just two goals in it at the break with the Cats’ second goal.

Fennelly cracked home a third Kilkenny goal in the 44th minute, but Callanan then responded for Tipperary with his third with 50 minutes on the clock. Remarkably, Callanan bettered Fennelly’s tally, scoring 3-6, and still ended up on the losing side.

Fennelly completed his hat-trick in the 56th minute to level the game and then Mark Kelly kicked home a fifth for the home side with two minutes remaining. The Cats then hit three points without reply at the death to complete a stunning comeback win.
