D1A: Amazing Tipp comeback shocks Cork

ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION IA: CORK 4-21 TIPPERARY 2-18

An incredible comeback by Tipperary saw them claim top spot in Division IA of the Allianz Hurling League as Cork let a 12-point lead slip at Páirc Uí Rinn today.

Leading by 0-15 to 0-13 after a hectic first half, the Rebels had had their lead cut to a point, 0-16 to 0-15, when they struck for two goals in a minute. First, Conor Lehane struck in the 42nd after Aidan Walsh and Séamus Harnedy had linked well and then, after the restart, Patrick Horgan managed to extract the ball from a scrum of players outside the Tipperary ‘D’ and he finished smartly after surging towards the goal.

On 52 minutes, sub Paudie O’Sullivan fired to the net after Séamus Harnedy’s point attempt had come back off the post and when Horgan got his second, a lovely ground strike after seemingly being dispossessed, Cork looked safe with a 4-19 to 0-19 lead.

However, Tipperary refused to wilt and Kieran Bergin responded with a goal immediately. Jason Forde then struck on 56 minutes to leave it 4-20 to 2-21 and though Séamus Harnedy responded with a Cork point, Tipp would get the next seven in a row.

Three frees from Séamus Callanan looked to only be consolation scores but when Noel McGrath added two more, the visitors sensed that they might get something. Sub Conor Kenny’s excellent point from a tight angle brought them level in the 69th minute and then McGrath finished off the job from Callanan’s lay-off.

Cork had chances of an equaliser, but they couldn’t take them and they have to be satisfied with second place. The hosts had the edge for most of the first half, Horgan scoring eight points before the break. Four points in a row pushed them 0-15 to 0-10 clear by the 32nd minute, but Tipp gave notice of their strong finish as Callanan (two) and McGrath got the last three points of the half. They would produce something even more special at the end of the second period.
