Sweeney fires Tipp to higher ground

TIPPERARY 5-16 LEITRIM 0-16

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

Tipperary destroyed Leitrim with a five-goal blitz and secured promotion to Division 3 in an entertaining game at Carrick-on-Shannon. Brian Fox had the ball in the Leitrim net within 12 seconds, serving notice of their intentions and they followed up with two points by Conor Sweeney before Emlyn Mulligan got Leitrim on the scoresheet. Two further Leitrim points by Darren Sweeney and Mulligan reduced the arrears but a superb Tipperary goal by Sweeney in the 14th minute put the visitors ahead 2-3 to 0-3. Leitrim reduced the arrears to three points in added time in the first half when Philip Austin finished to the net following a defensive mix-up to widen the gap to 3-8 to 0-10 at the break.

A Darren Sweeney point from play six minutes into the second half looked like the start of a Leitrim revival but it was Tipperary who once more reasserted their dominance with a Quinlivan pointed free followed by Tipp’s fourth goal by Ian Fahy in the 44th minute. The hosts struggled to get back into the game but the dismissal of Robbie Lowe for a second yellow card in the 53rd minute, followed by Tipp’s fifth goal through Conor Sweeney six minutes later, finally killed off the Leitrim challenge.
