“Tipperary Handball Gold Rush”
Tipperary Handball got a big boost at the weekend with our Juveniles winning 6 Gold & 1 Silver in the All-Ireland finals in Ballymoe in Roscommon. They totally dominated proceedings with Kilkenny winning 4, Kildare 2 Limerick 1, Tyrone 1 & Wexford 1 title. The girls U15 Doubles from Lahorna started off what turned out to be a remarkable day beating Lauren Flanagan & Leanne Boland from Wexford 15/3, 15/14. The Boys U16 doubles James Prentice (Ballina) & Sean McAdams (Lahorna) won in great style beating Anthony Butler & Patrick Boland from Wexford 21/4, 21/6. The only setback came in the third final when the U17 Doubles from Newport Barry O Meara & Dan Healy were beaten by Liam Rossiter & Laurence Dunne from Wexford 21/14, 21/16. Sinéad Meagher (Nenagh) after her recent success at the World Championships got the Tipperary dominance back on track winning the U16Singles beating Molly Dagg from Kildare 21/2, 21/8. Gerome Cahill was next in the U16 Singles & he overcame a strong challenge from Ben Devlin from Louth but went on to win 21/18, 21/13. In the U15 doubles Daire Madden (Lahorna) & Conor Bourke (Ballina) after a close first game against Eoghan Doheny & Padraic Dunne from Laois winning 15/12 went on to win the second 15/8. Síle Spain from Lahorna finished off a great day winning the U17 singles against Catriona Lawlor from Kilkenny 21/4, 21/3.
Tipperary were also out in the Adult Doubles finals at the Weekend winning 2 All-Ireland titles. In St. Comans in Roscommon John Lee (Ballina) & Paul Maher (Clonmel) won the SMBD all-Ireland beating Kenny Curran & Finbar Fullen from Tyrone 21/6, 21/11. In Garryhill in Carlow the O’Flaherty brothers Pat & Tony from Youghalarra had a great win over Robbie McCarthy Snr. & K Flanagan Westmeath in the GMAD winning 21/14, 6/21, 21/16. Also in Garryhill in SMAD John McQuaid (Ballina) & Adrian Johnson (Ballyporeen) were beaten by Tom Sheridan & John Leahy from Meath 21/7, 21/14. John Fercombe & Michael Purcell (Cashel) were beaten by Joe Cummins & Stephen Quinn from Meath 21/12, 21/13. Tipperary were down to play in 3 other finals at the weekend in Talbots Inch but the games were postponed as the alley was unplayable due to a wet court.
