FBD Insurance County Junior ‘B’ Football Championship

Well done to Upperchurch Drombane who claimed the FBD Insurance County Junior ‘B’ Football Championship title last Saturday with a 2-17 to 1-9 victory over Thurles Gaels at The Ragg. Upperchurch Drombane made a strong start, opening up a 0-4 to 0-0 lead with Thurles Gaels not registering their first score until after the opening quarter. A goal from Podge Griffin just before half time helped Upperchurch Drombane to a 1-7 to 0-3 advantage at the interval. A second goal, from a Pat Shortt penalty midway through the second half, effectively sealed the victory as Upperchurch Drombane moved 2-12 to 0-6 ahead. Jamie Meaney found the net for Thurles Gaels later in the game but Upperchurch Drombane had done enough to secure the title. Congratulations to the players and management of Upperchurch Drombane, with captain Colm Ryan accepting the cup on behalf of the team.

AIB Munster Club Championships

Fethard got the Tipperary clubs’ Munster Championship campaign off to a fine start last Saturday in West Clare where they defeated Ennistymon by 1-13 to 2-9 in the AIB Munster Junior Hurling Quarter Final. It was a hard fought encounter with Fethard deserving of their 0-8 to 0-3 half time advantage. The Clare side struck the first goal of the game midway through the second half to reduce the Fethard lead – in fact Ennistymon had the sides level on the 47th minute – 0-10 to 1-7. A crucial goal from Ryan Walsh in the 52nd minute helped Fethard regain the initiative and they subsequently opened up a four point lead. Ennistymon raised a late challenge with an injury time goal but the Tipperary side held firm to secure a deserved one point victory. Fethard will now face Cork champions Kilshannig in the Semi Final on Saturday 14th November at a Tipperary venue.

The following day, St Mary’s made it two wins from two for the Tipperary clubs when they defeated Cork’s Ballincollig by 1-16 to 0-15 at Clonmel Sportsfield in the AIB Munster Intermediate Hurling Quarter Final. St Mary’s produced an impressive finish to the first half to lead by 0-9 to 0-5 at the interval and continued to build on that advantage after the restart. Their lead was extended to six points midway through the half when substitutes Michael Murphy and Thomas Charles combined to set up midfielder Tadhg Condon who finished emphatically to the net to give the Clonmel side a commanding 1-13 to 0-7 advantage. To their credit, Ballincollig gradually ate into the St Mary’s lead but the Tipperary side’s defence stood firm in the closing stages, denying the Cork outfit a much needed goal as they held out for a four point victory. St Mary’s reward is a Semi Final meeting with Kerry champions Abbeydorney at a Kerry venue on Sunday 15th November. This is not St Mary’s first experience of Munster Club Championship action having previously competed in the 2017 Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship. On that occasion, they lost out to Cork’s Kanturk in the Quarter Final meaning they have already gone one step further in this year’s campaign.

Attention now turns to this weekend’s fixtures with three Tipperary clubs set to continue their Munster Championship campaigns.

Loughmore Castleiney will face Cork champions Nemo Rangers in the Munster Senior Football Quarter Final this Sunday 8th November at 1.15pm in Páirc Uí Rinn. Loughmore Castleiney will be hoping to replicate their impressive run in the competition in 2024 when they reached the Munster Final. On that occasion, they defeated Clare’s Éire Óg in the Semi Final before eventually losing out to Kerry’s Dr Crokes in the provincial decider.

Also in action on Sunday 8th November will be Killenaule, who will host Limerick opposition Na Piarsaigh at 1.15pm in Clonmel Sportsfield in the Munster Intermediate Football Quarter Final.

Killenaule’s neighbours, CJ Kickhams Mullinahone, will be in action the previous day, Saturday 7th November when they travel to face Limerick opposition Athea at 1.15pm in Athea. Mullinahone are no strangers to Munster Championship football having reached the Munster Junior Football Final in 2019. They defeated Limerick’s Croom in the Semi Final that year before eventually losing out to Kerry’s Na Gaeil in the provincial decider. They also contested the Munster Intermediate Football Championship in 2011, enjoying another impressive campaign. Mullinahone overcame Limerick’s Mountcollins in the Quarter Final before defeating Waterford’s Dungarvan in the Semi Final eventually losing out to Kerry’s Milltown Castlemaine in the Final. They will be hoping to draw on that previous provincial experience as they look to make another strong impression in this year’s competition and go one step further.

Thurles Sarsfields will travel to Clare on Sunday 15th November to face Clare champs Inagh Kilnamona in the Senior Hurling Semi Final.

Munster “Safety Direct” Co Intermediate Hurling Champions Competition

Once again Newport GAA Club will host a County Intermediate Champions Hurling competition this year following their very successful inaugural event last year which was won by Knockavilla Kickhams. Munster Council granted Newport club permission to run this event as the Premier Intermediate champions now represent the counties in the official Munster competition. The Arravale Rovers team features their county final winning star Johnny Ryan who was also a member of the Tipperary SH panel during 2026. The referee on Sun is Johnny Healy (Smith O Briens). The other county champions who are expected to feature over the coming weeks are Knockaderry (Limerick), The Banner Ennis (Clare) and Bandon (Cork).
