Divisional Championships
Clonoulty Rossmore created history by winning an unprecedented tenth consecutive ArraTipp West Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship title with a hard fought 1-20 to 1-16 victory over Cashel King Cormacs in last Saturday evening’s final at Dundrum. In a cagey first half, both sides were guilty of a number of wides with Clonoulty edging the interval 0-8 to 0-7 ahead. The sides remained evenly matched after the break before Clonoulty took the advantage midway through the second half when Michael Ryan (Winnie) fired home a crucial goal. Cashel responded in determined fashion with Ger Browne finding the net five minutes later to put his side 1-16 to 1-15 in front. However, the reigning champions finished strongly, scoring the final five points of the game to seal victory, claim their 26th West Senior title and complete a remarkable ten in a row. Stephen Ferncombe and Enda Heffernan were presented with the O’Dwyer Cup after the game. For Cashel King Cormacs, the wait for a first West Senior crown since 1995 continues. Arravale Rovers claimed their first Tipperary Credit Union West Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championship title since 2013 with a deserved 0-26 to 2-14 victory over Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams in last Friday’s final at Annacarty. Rovers produced an impressive first half display to take control of the contest, leading 0-16 to 1-6 at the break, with Kickhams’ goal coming from Elliott Thompson. The Tipperary Town side maintained their advantage throughout the second half despite a late Jack Breen goal for Kickhams. Arravale Rovers held firm to secure a six point victory with captain John Paul Lohan accepting the John Farrell Cup after the final whistle. Sean Treacy’s recorded a 1-26 to 1-23 victory over Golden Kilfeacle in the final round of the ArraTipp West Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship last weekend. Treacy’s needed a seven point victory to secure a place in the final and ultimately fell short of the required margin. Despite the defeat, Golden Kilfeacle did enough to qualify for the decider where they will face Éire Óg Annacarty Donohill this Saturday July 18th at 7.00 pm in Clonoulty.

It was a weekend to remember in the South Tipperary hurling championships as St Mary’s and Skeheenarinky both created history with memorable divisional final victories. St Mary’s captured just their second Clonmel Oil South Senior Hurling Championship title – and their first since 1981 – with a 1-16 to 0-17 victory over CJ Kickhams Mullinahone in last Sunday’s final at Fethard. Mullinahone led 0-11 to 0-7 at half time but a Joe Higgins goal ten minutes into the second half levelled the game at 1-10 to 0-13. The Clonmel side took confidence from the score, edged in front soon afterwards and held their advantage to the finish to seal a famous victory. Seamus Kennedy captained St Mary’s to the title and was deservedly named Man of the Match. Meanwhile, Skeheenarinky claimed their first ever South Intermediate Hurling Championship title after a dramatic 2-20 to 0-25 victory over Ballingarry in Saturday’s final at Clonmel Sportsfield. Ballingarry led 0-13 to 1-8 at the interval, despite a first half Darragh Brennan goal for Skeheenarinky, after finishing the opening period with four unanswered points. Skeheenarinky edged a point in front by the second half water break but Ballingarry rallied to lead by two entering the closing stages. However, there was a dramatic twist as Conor Sweeney struck a late goal to secure a famous and historic victory for Skeheenarinky. James Barry was the victorious captain with Darragh Brennan receiving the man of the match award.

The North Tipperary Hurling Championship Finals took centre stage last Sunday in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh with two entertaining deciders. In the Liam Buckley Car Sales North Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Final, Silvermines claimed their first ever North Premier Intermediate title with an impressive 1-18 to 0-16 victory over reigning champions Ballina. Silvermines were full value for their success holding a 0-12 to 0-8 advantage at the interval after an excellent opening half. Ballina battled back strongly after the restart and had reduced the deficit to a single point with ten minutes remaining, setting up a tense finish. However, the crucial score of the contest arrived when Danny Quinn found the net for Silvermines giving his side the breathing space they needed to see out the game. Silvermines captain Mikey Corcoran was named Man of the Match following an outstanding performance as his side secured a memorable divisional title. The Munster Solar North Senior Hurling Championship Final proved to be a thrilling contest as Borris-Ileigh edged out Nenagh Éire Óg by 2-29 to 3-25 after extra time. Nenagh Éire Óg made the brighter start with an early goal from Ben West helping them to a narrow 1-9 to 0-11 lead at half time. The second half was equally competitive with both sides trading scores throughout. Deep into injury time, Jake Morris struck a dramatic goal from a free to force extra time with the sides level at 0-23 to 2-17. Borris-Ileigh responded superbly in the additional period with Paddy McCormack giving them the perfect start in extra time. The drama continued right to the finish as Eddie Ryan’s superb goal in the second period of extra time appeared to have secured victory for Borris-Ileigh. However, Nenagh Éire Óg responded immediately, with Jake Morris converting a penalty to level matters once again. The next score proved to be the decisive one, as Eddie Ryan converted a free for Borris-Ileigh to edge his side back in front. The final whistle soon followed, confirming a dramatic 2-29 to 3-25 victory and securing Borris-Ileigh’s first North Senior Hurling Championship title since 2017.

Three hurling finals took place in the Mid division over the weekend with Clonakenny, Thurles Sarsfields and Loughmore Castleiney all emerging victorious. It was their first Mid Intermediate title since 2013 with captain Cain Russell accepting the trophy after the game. A double header in Boherlahan on Sunday began with Thurles Sarsfields defeating Moyne Templetuohy 0-18 to 0-11 in the Doran Oil Mid Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship final. Sarsfields led 0-10 to 0-8 at the break in a closely contested opening half before gradually pulling clear during the final 20 minutes. Captain Michael Cahill accepted the Fr J.J. O’Rourke Cup following the seven point victory. The Centenary Agri Mid Senior Hurling Championship final provided a thrilling conclusion to the weekend. Loughmore Castleiney and Holycross Ballycahill served up a classic encounter with Loughmore holding a narrow 0-12 to 0-11 lead at half time. Holycross looked set for victory after moving three points clear in the closing stages of normal time but Loughmore’s experience shone through as they battled back to force extra time with the sides level at 0-20 apiece. Loughmore led by a point at the interval in extra time before finishing strongly. A late Liam Treacy goal put the result beyond doubt as they secured a 1-29 to 0-25 victory. This was a big weekend for Tipperary Handball contesting 60×30 Doubles Championships. Our Ladies O35 Doubles Ann Marie Ryan & Karen Monaghan made the long trip to Kells to take on the local pairing of Sinead Forde & Joy Smith. This was a huge challenge for the Tipp pair who were up against the current world 40×20 Champions in a packed home support court. Meath were first to serve but Ann Marie & Karen were to the forefront from the start and although there were many rallies Tipp came out on top in every one and went on to win the first 21/5. An expected backlash in the second never materialised as the Tipp pair got stronger and stronger as the game progressed and had the home supporters silenced when leading 20-2. The Meath Girls had a purple patch and made another 10 aces but it was short lived as Tipperary finished strongly to record a 21/12 victory and the All Ireland title. The Tipp Girls have now done the Double winning both 40×20 & 60×30 Doubles with Karen adding the singles in Both as well. An incredible year for the Club & County.
In the Senior Doubles Ger Coonan & James Prentice (Ballina) contested the Quarter Final & beat Gary Mc Connell & Brian Carroll 4/21 21/16, 11/6. They were beaten in the Semi Final by Ciarán Neary & Brian Mahon Kilkenny. In The Minor Doubles All Ireland Semi Final Dean Carey & James Delaney after a tough battle were eventually defeated by Aaron McElhone & Owen Kelly Tyrone.Well done to all our players competing at the weekend.
